I've been without a gaming machine for the last 3 years after not being without one since 1979. I have other devices, obviously, but touchscreen gaming isn't for me and my Mac isn't capable of gaming much beyond Solitaire. It's been hell. A few weeks ago I bought a PS 4 Pro. I got Project Cars 2 with it and thought I was set. Unfortunately I find some of the cars in that game completely undriveable with the controller.

It got me thinking about the good old days when I used a Namco NeGcon with the original GT and GT2 as well. That was an awesome controller. I could consistently beat anyone who was using the standard Sony controller and, more significantly, so could anyone else using the NeGcon. I did the research but there's no way to make that controller work with the PS4 Pro.

Then someone mentioned the 6-axis functionality that I wasn't aware even existed. It's as close as I can get to the NeGcon feeling without the hassle of an actual wheel. The only thing missing is physical resistance, but my old bones are going to take care of that anyway. I already hate the hair-pins.

So, sorry for the long post, but what do you think? Have you tried it and if so did you keep at it or did you go back to stick steering?

It takes some getting used to, and can become a bit uncomfortable after extended play. I would say it is more accurate and smoother than using the sticks, but it does take a lot of getting used to. You have to be very subtle with your movements.

You will only have 90° movement each way, any more and you will find the steering will “invert”.

Give it a go.

I've been using it for the last few days and I really like it. What's odd though - and it may just be me - is that it works far better hot-lapping or even with AI than it does with real people. In a real online race with real people the last thing I want to do is take them out but I always seem to be focussing on a tiny point in the distance with 6-axis & I know that isn't the case using the regular stick. It means I'm less aware of my immediate surroundings. It's just a weird shakiness that seems to come over me in the presence of real - albeit online - people.

I enable motion control with any racing game that supports it because imo it is just that good. I wish Codemasters would implement it in their F1 and rally titles.

I've tried the 6 axis, not in a driving game as such but in WipEout, which is still racing, and I'm afraid it isn't for me. The biggest problem that I have with it is there's no sense of centre, which means I end up wobbling along over correcting my over-inputs, sometimes quite violently.

I suppose with some perseverance I could get the hang of it, but when I have other control methods that give me a more intuitive feel right from the outset, then I don't think I'm going to go forward with it

So it's stick or wheel for me. I can see where other people get on with the 6 axis, but for me, nah.

Can you elaborate this in more detail? I can't say I've noticed.

The motion controls will correct small errors in your steering - keep you on your line if your hand shakes etc. Give the controller to your grandparents or children and you can see the effect.

I've been using it for a few days now and I like it a lot. It allows me much more control over fine adjustments to steering angle mid-corner. I have to turn off the vibration feature though because after a couple of laps on the Nordschleife my hands are quivering. It's definitely worth persevering with and mastering. It's excellent for hot-lapping.

P.S. I'm still not feeling any self-centreing.
