hey guys, i was wondering about playing GT5 on the launch 60GB PS3s.
because i was gonna get GT5 this week but after reading loads of posts and stuff on the 60GB PS3s getting YLOD after playing.
im not sure whether to get GT5 now, is there a high chance of getting YLOD with GT5???? :)

I've got a 60GB PS3 and i'd say the games been on quite alot. Only crashed once and i read up later it was crashin at same point for other people too due to the game using the Internet.

Black Ops on the other hand people have said that is causing the older PS3's to pack in( happened to my friend the other night)

the reason why 60gb have been yoldind is due to the fact that they are old and first gen. Every PS3 game at some point at time has bricked a 60gb PS3.

I have the original 20GB with an upgraded to 320 HDD and it gets A LOT of use from movies to games and music. It has been on almost 10 hours a day since GT5 and no problems. I just make sure I have a fan on it and keep it cool

Just open it up and clean it out. My (admittedly modified) 60GB model doesn't even turn the fan onto the highest speed when playing the game, and it only rarely get's into the penultimate speed.

My PS3 60GB (Original NA launch) has been fairing fine. It's YLOD'ed twice and I've fixed it twice. I hope it doesn't do it again.

I bought my first PS3 the year it came out and only once has there been a problem with it (blu-ray thing got broken so I couldn't play any games). Now I've had this 60Gb for almost 3 years, nothing wrong with it. But when this does brake, I'm going to buy the Slim version =)

I bought my 60GB PS3 on JPN launch day and it's been on 24/7 since then (using it as a web server). Since GT5 came out i've been running it 5 to 10h per day, mostly b spec and the fans never go full speed while they did as a web server. I guess it's pretty random if they ylod or not, just crossing my fingers until we can backup our saves.

My 60GB runs much cooler while running GT5 than any other game. If your PS3 is going to die it'll do so regardless of what games you've been playing.

I have original 60gb ps3, never had any faults with it. I have been playing GT5 a lot with it recently too.
The only thing that made it go mental was a demo of Uncharted 2, it was seriously noisy constantly at very high level.
GT5 is kind to the PS3 no matter what happens it stays a reasonable noise.

My 60Gb model has been playing GT5 for 5 hours a night since the 23rd, (12 hours at the weekends).

It's fine, and I love my wife :)

Yeah thats a good point. My PS3 hardly makes a noise when playing GT5. The fan seems to kick in more when im Watching DIVX. :|

I have one as well and have been leaving my PS3 on for nearly 16 hours a day since I've had the game with no problems. I've had two game freezes in the same spot, but not crashes as I could still get the XMB.

I live in the desert and we don't use A/C so this thing has experienced lots of heat over the years and been fine, plus more dust than most of you could imagine. I'm talking months of 95-105 F temps inside the house while I whatever game I'm playing at the time. Sits on a piece of cardboard on the open floor next to the TV stand.

My Fat 60 YLOD'd the first night GT5 came out, and wasn't even nearly hot when it did so, I suspect it was the PSU (power supply unit) that packed up. I didn't bother fixing it because it was already 4 years old, once you fix the PSU then the BGU (ball grid array) desolders itself, then you fix that and the blu ray laser burns out, you fix that then who knows what else will die?

So I took it on the chin, bought a 160gb slim and I haven't even gone back to Black Ops since, GT5 is all I've played on it so far. But yeah, every major release has killed a PS3, my reasoning for that is this.

If 5% of PS3's ever made will die (uneducated guess), more of those 5% will be playing a big release like GT5, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Call of Duty or Killzone than they will be playing something like Arkham Asylum or Just Cause 2, so naturally when a lot of people buy one game, more failures occur while playing that game, so everyone thinks that game is killing PS3's.

I put mine down to age, frankly I'm surprised it lasted that long, being a launch model and the amount I play would stress any system, hence why I got the 3 year warranty on my new slim!

Why that the loading screen for the Rally races by any chance?

60 gigs here, and my PS3 is doing fine. Actually today i got some weird beeping that scared me to death... until I discovered it was my FragFX that for some reason decided to go crazy.

40 GB and 3 or 4 crashes but that was server crashes (but after immediate realise) so touchwood for me.

I have the 80gb motorstorm bundle ps3, and i haven't had any problems, only 1 crash. But after hearing about the YLOD i dont play gt5 for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time without giving it a break. The 80 gig backwards compatible ps3 is getting kinda hard to find, i wouldn't want to brick it.

Yep, same one. I know someone else had the same problem but it was an A-Spec race if I remember right, so not sure if it's the system not liking the load or just bad discs possibly.

Any advise on keeping the 60 in tiptop running conditions? I would hate to have a YLOD after getting to where i am now. i would probably freak out like that kid who WOW account got deleted. :dopey: haha

In order from easiest to hardest:
Replace the PSU with a cooler-running one.
Replace the 15-blade fan with the 19-blade fan (If applicable. Some CECHAs came with 19-blade fans).
Completely clean the insides out of dust.
Replace the thermal paste.

any DIY for this somewhere?

I have a launch day 60gb and never had any issues with it at all. Never even knew YLOD existed til I saw it mentioned here.

With GT5 the fan would run loudly during the game and I got worried. Ordered up some arctic silver 5 and took the PS3 apart and cleaned everything out and put the new paste on. The fan does not run nearly as hard as it used to now and everything seems good to go.

I have a 60gb as well. Knock on wood, I havent had any problems. Since the 60gb version is overheating (IIRC) I made a fan shroud that holds 3 fans and pulls any hot air out. After about 2 hours it starts to pull somewhat warm air out. I usually dont play for more than 2 hours at a time..............Knock on wood

I'd just like to point out that heat isn't the only thing that causes the YLOD, if there's a fault with the PSU it'll YLOD and shortly after won't even try to start up again, that's what mine did. It may be a cheap fix, though, I seem to remember seeing a Fat PSU on ebay for £10 or so, I chose to replace mine though because it was so old.

Funny with the invention of the Internet we tend to think things are more wide spread. Do research on anything you want to purchase and you will see people saying negative things about quality and the like. I am 41 and I don't think I have EVER had an electronic device fail before it was supposed to. The thing is people don't go online and say "everything is great" nearly as much as they go online saying " this thing sucks". I heard somewhere somebody say you don't see news reports stating "there was a safe landing at the airport today." I guess my point is just have fun with it. I think they are a lot more reliable than the complaints make it seem.

Yeah i had it crash twice on the loading screen in the Rally event. wasnt a proper crash as i didnt need to turn it off at the back which is good.

The inet cable was in the PS3 but not connected when it crashed.
