speaking on (turbo rx7 owner btw, everyone knows the heating issues with those things) my fat 80gb motorstorm ps3 ylod early august. November 28th I had it fixed by a local dude, since then no problems and been playing 6-8 hour sessions on gt5, I left the system on for 30 hours straight last saturday/sunday playing gt5 with no issue so I think were good as long as people know the thing will over heat and to take measures to cool it.

two things for the gen 1 ps3's,
whats happening is the board bends/constricts during the natural heating and cooling process that happens when it is on and off, causing the chips to move slightly and pop the solders off. From now on when I turn the system off I quit the game, and wait to make sure the big fan isn't running 1st, if the fans are not running that tells me the temps are low enough to turn off. 2nd thing is just put a little fan in front of it to blow air towards it and make sure the thing is in the open.

I'm running an original 60GB and I have had no problems over the years, I keep it standing in a clear area and clean it out regularly with compressed air and the vaccum. It even took a nasty voltage spike from a bad transformer on my incoming power that killed my tv, cable box, an x-box, and wii power supply (I now have a surge protector on all that.) The blue-ray sounds a little noisey these days, but overall it's doing ok.

My 360 is fine too, I don't online multiplayer, and I suspect there are some real killer games out there that do their killing with their multiplayer.

I have an original 60 gb and I live in a fairly dusty area. I've been meaning to clean it out Lately because I know that thing is chock full of dust. Part of the reason I haven't done it yet is because I don't know if I should mess with that sticker. I mean my ps is old and def out of warranty so what would happen if I have to send it back for some reason with the sticker tampered with because I had to clean it out??

My 60gb launch PS3 died (YLOD) after 2 hours of playing GT5 with my brother. No extra heat, no abnormal conditions. I tried everything to get it to work again short of opening it up. I left that day to go to parents' house for Thanksgiving, so the day I got back I bought a new 160gb, and haven't looked back. My old PS3 is now booting again, but I'm not taking the risk of losing my save again, and I bought the 3 year walmart warranty to top it off (it was only like $20) and play it safe.

Launch 60gb here, replaced my 15-blade fan with a 80gb ps3 fan I got from Hardforum for $13. A week before that (2 weeks ago), I replaced the almost completely dried out white thermal paste with some IC-7 thermal paste.

I'm confident mine ain't gonna YLOD. It's also elevated to keep the bottom cool.

lol I was very confident that mine couldn't YLOD, as it has always been in a low-dust high airflow environment, and had worked flawlessly (and used very lightly and sparingly) since launch. I didn't replace the thermal paste, but did everything but internal mods to keep the air flow going to keep it cool. Mine died for no apparent reason, no overheating that was noticeable. I wouldn't have replaced the paste normally, as the PS3 is kind of a pain to open, and once its open, they won't fix it for the $150 (as far as I understand it).

Those are good preventative maintenance ideas, but I still wonder whether you're just going to end up having the same issues as many of us (or not). I guess every little bit helps.

I've had GT5 running for 48 hours straight on my Fat 60GB. I also recently had a Bluray laser go bad in it a few months ago and paid Sony to replace it. I don't know what all else they do to the systems besides clean them, but it's been running great since it came back.

I keep it on a shelf above my TV to keep dust to a minimum and have always kept it vertical.

I just installed an 80GB Intel SSD drive into it, and I gotta say it loads up GT5 a LOT faster now.

Your paste was probably dried up, the only thing I could see happening to my PS3 is the Blu Ray drive going bad or having a dirty eye.

I'll let you know when my PS3 gets a YLOD, I don't use it much either. Maybe when GT6 comes out, it'll be on 24/7

My 40GB died tonight. Wasn't to happy when it happen but, at least it happen around 1800 when I was still able to drive over to Best Buy to get another one. I was able to get it to boot up once I got home. When I left it was DOA. Been doing the data transfer for a while now. It is at 56 percent at the moment and says 35 Min's left. Might actually get to play tonight / this morning before I hit the rack.

I have put some serious hours on it these past few months. Black Ops is at 95 hours online game time, and I have not played it since GT5 arrived. PS3 is on and running at least 10 hours a day for the past 4 weeks.

I'm still on the first page trying to figure out what a 'YLOD' is.

Any help?

YLOD is the 'Yellow Light Of Death' when your PS3 wont turn on and flashes a yellow warning on the front (which is actually the green and red LED mixing colours).

It means that there has been a hardware failure which is usually due to some component separating from the mainboard (such as the CPU or GPU). This is due to lead free solder which doesnt do well in extreme cooling and heating.

It can also be a faulty power supply or hard drive but those are less likely to be the cause. You can usually prevent against YLOD just by replacing the themal paste.

Oh ok. Many thanks. Gladly haven't had that but I did have an HDD failure and got prompted that the Hard Disk needed to be rebuilt. Is that common as well?

Am I correct in that lead free solder has to be used these days in all toys and the PS3 and any other games console for that matter are classed as toys, as am I sure I read/heard this somewhere. If this is the case then it needs looking into, because no child is ever going to open up a games console and eat the lead, it's just another stupid rule and it is contributing to a lot of problems.

Sounds more like corruption rather than failure if it just needed to be rebuilt, it does happen but much less. If it totally died then you would probably get the YLOD.

I think lead free solder now has to be used in everything, not just childens toys. Its more about the end of life enviromental impact rather than a kid opening it. Lead is a heavy metal so they have to stop it leeching into the soil etc.

I have to say though lead free solder is a really poor substitute for lead and the worlds electronics were a whole lot more reliable with proper solder (in the 80's and 90's). The irony is that lead free stuff breaks quicker so it just means more waste whereas good quality stuff will have a longer life and wont end up in landfill so quicky.

I tried to copy my game save info to a USB last night just invade I get the YLOD. It said the info could not be copied. All my other games copied over no problem. Can anyone tell me how to copy it?

Nope , got my 60gb PS3 working all day ( 10 hours per day, last two days, non stop ) on GT5 and no problems... only mod was replacing the HDD with a 500GB one, actually almost a year ago and all ok.

touch wood, love my 60gb :)

My only advice to launch ps3 owners or 3+ year ps3 owners to keep the system and area around it clean.
I would also do some preventative maintenance, that's if you have the skills/knowledge of taking it apart all the way to taking the cpu/gpu heat sink off. It was a gamble for me and I just followed step by step instructions.

Knowing that my ps3 is running on new thermal paste and a 19 blade fan, the chance of failure isn't bothering me at all. I'll just use my new 160gb ps3 I finally got today from bestbuy.

Swoop up one of these deals guys:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Electro...00050017.c?id=pcmcat227100050017&DCMP=rdr1430

Paid $1446 out the door (Ca Tax, Recycle Fee)

Where did you get the IC-7? Having a dog of a time finding it anywhere, even online.

Hi im new to this site but think i can help. I too had the problem of my system crashing, freezing, due to large processing load. In particular i also have the 60 gig. Its a first gen from the end of 2007. my system would freeze in gta4 full online room amd also in MAG due to high volume. My nerd squad guy fixed me up with an internal 2.5 inch ATA hard drive for the 60 gig i had at the time. It comes in 20gigs all the way up to 500gigs for a perfect ps3 fit. It cost me 95 dollars at best buy for the 500 gig. installations a breeze and gave my system that extra processing space it needed. Since i installed it i havent had any problems with gt5 or any other game that is untill i dropped it down a flight of stairs lol. ooops.

I bought mine from Microcenter.
Between Artic 5 vs IC-7, the reviews have been better towards IC-7, although its only a few degrees better. I'll take it anyway!

My 60GB fried about a week BEFORE I got GT5. I was playing GTA4 a lot. I took it in to a guy who repairs consoles, and he "tested it and it's fine". Took it back, it was exactly the same as before I brought it to him. Took it back, he re-tested it, and now he says the processor is fried. I never even got to try GT5 on the 60GB, so when I returned it to him, I went out and bought a new 320GB with Move, just to be able to play GT5.

I never used the backwards compatibility feature anyways, and the slim is way quieter and runs a lot cooler than the phat. I have no regrets.

i have a 60gb ps3 since the ps3's launch

GT5 runs perfectly fine, haven't had any freezes whatsoever or any faults.
