I have been having trouble staying in lobbies and lounges since a week ago Sunday. I have a race tonight and I don't want to lose out on points again. If I go wired direct from my modem to the ps3, will that help out? Assuming of course the problem isn't with my internet and is with my router settings.

It worked. For the first time since a week ago I wasn't kicked before or during a race. I guess I will just go direct from modem to ps3 from now on during races. Good feeling getting points for racing instead of getting kicked lol.

Well, thanks for the replies to my issue.

Basically after some thought I was wondering why some people needed to do all this port forwarding and some people didn't. And as my connection speed is decent I decided to look for other possible solutions.

Its been a while since I went in to my Sony Playstation Account via the PS3 and on the first attempt I noticed it required me to 'active' some options. My Playstation plus account had expired (after the 30 day freebie that Sony offered as a result of their servers going down).

I then went back to GT5 and went online and managed to join 5 different racing rooms with no troubles at all !

So just from this evidence alone I am guessing the 717 error could be due to an inactive setting on the user's playstation account.

To give an idea of how long its been since I went in to the account settings, its probably been 2 PS3 updates ago.
Each time I log on to the PS3 it has always shown the 'signed in'.....but I'm guessing by actually going to the account settings and maybe turning on the 'game activation'* solves the GT5 717 error.

* I am at work at the moment and can't quite remember what the menu for this was or if indeed it was called 'game activation'.
All I can say is, if anybody is having the 717 error to go in to their PS3 account and have a good look around in there to find what I am talking about.

p.s.
I have not done any of the port forwarding or changed any of my internet setting within the PS3 as suggested by previous posts.

Hope this works for others with this error!

that is system activation & concerns the activation of the username on that system.
You may not have seen a '717' that time, but I'm pretty sure, they'll be back & system activation didn't help it.

Could it be a possibility that when the Sony network went down that Sony had to re-set something along the line when they brought it back?
(Just a thought as I have to point out that I'm no IT expoert in anyway).

Or maybe that some people's accounts, having not been accessed during this sony network downtime, and since then, may have had some sort of 'time-out' feature on them? (maybe as a security measure?)

I'm guessing that GT5 reads the sony network account at some point during the online racing process?

Just putting my thoughts in to text by the way, I have no other ideas as to what it could be, but I can report that this evening on GT5 I got into another 7 or 8 rooms with only one of them giving a 'disconnected from server' error whilst trying to 'get in' to the room.
As of yet, no 717 errors.

If this turns out to just be a running fluke then I will report back on here if I get any further 717 errors.

I have definitely noticed that my port, DNS, and NAT settings reset every time I shut off my Playstation. If i just turn it on and play it won't work but if I go to my router, forward my ports (while the Playstation is on and set with a static IP), and then reconnect to the network with my Playstation (using the DNS I have saved etc.) It works no problem until I shut it off again. I'm not sure if this is a fault on my router's part or the Playstation, but it seems to be the only thing that consistantly works. A bit of hassle as it takes 30 seconds- 1 minute to do but it's well worth it. I suspect this error is directly related to high latency (a high ping) and less to do with the bandwidth of the connection. I also think that our routers may be the culprit here. Anybody who is having this issue still, please share the brand, model, and tell if the connection is wired or wireless. Might help us figure out the root of the problem!

Some times that happens to me as well, but when i clear the cache, it works. So it can be some kind of bug/glitch. Also, as i have said before, it depends on your internet equipment/settings. Different brands are better than other etc...
