I though I'd ask the expertise of our collective forum members concerning this.

FIrst of all, we all know that "people" (whoever that may be) say that 720p (or 1080P) is better for moving frames. I do not have the expertise to support this claim, instead I just chose to believe it :)

As I was playing the demo of GT5P, I noticed jagged edges when panels are connected on the car models. One can clearly see this when suing a blue subaru. I thought, just for fun, I'd change the resolution to 1080i (that's the highest resolution my tv supports) and behold...the jagged edges were not as obvious as before.

Great work i thought, but then I remembered those same "people"saying that 1080i isn't that great for moving frames...

I myself did not notice and problems or malfunctions concerning the frame rate...I was wondering if it is really such a bad idea to run the game at 1080i, because there is a difference with 720p.

on a side not, there is a way to get rid of those jagged dges in 720p; all you have to do is reduce the sharpness...obviously, I did not do this, because I like my game to be sharp, as do the rest of you I imagine.

IMO, progressive scan is tops for moving images, especially 60fps. About 'glittering' door panels, you're right, lower sharpness. You can always have too much of a good thing...

I tried 1080i and 720p over and over comparing them. I like 1080i better. People will tell you that progressive is the way to go and that lcd tvs have a set resolution and 1080i offers no increase in resolution etc, but I have tested it with my own eyes and 1080 is a lot sharper on my samsung. And I dont notice anything bad in the fast moving images that I dont see in 720p.

BTW turn your sharness right down or off if you can. The PS3 does not output a blurry image (I cant think of anything that does so sharpness controls puzzle me). All you are doing is making the image worse than it should be.

Turn down sharpness to 0!

Sharpness is added by the TV. It is used to enhance low-quality 480i TV. In the case of the PS3, the image is not compressed at all, and therefore, it ADDS noise.

Also 1080i depends on your TV. If your TV's native resolution is 1080p, or it is significantly greater than 1280x720, then it is desireable to use 1080i. If your TV has good scaling, then it will scale the image well. Some problems for 1080i, is that it has to be de-interlaced before displayed on a progressive display. This may induce artifiacts or lag.

However, in the end, the best option is the option that suits you best.

Since GT5 is actually rendered above 720p (it is not actually 1080p either), it may look better when scaled down. However, on TVs which do not have a good scaler, or are native 720p anyways, it is much better to set it at 720p, since there will be zero lag and the frame rate may seem better.

Of course, if you have a high-end TV, NONE of this applies, and it's likely that 1080i will look better than 720p.

Hope that helped!

Does anyone know if GT5 or even GT5P are going to be in 1080p. I have been a bit disappointed lately with the PS3 games only being in 720p the majority of the time. I like to use the 1080p on my TV, so I can at least justify buying it for more than Blu-Rays. The 360 just upscales to 1080p so its not really any better looking, but the native 1080p games on both look great in 1080p.

hmmm, interesting. So what you guys are saying is that I should reduce or turn off my sharpness...because it adds noise to the image...You guys are sure about this right?

One thing I did notice on the demo version of GT5P is that when using 1080i and going to the car selection screen for the impreza (where the cars moves around and the camera switches around) one notices some lag...barely noticable, but its there. When using 720P...this is gone...weird eh?

Same here, less jaggies and crisper image on 1080i. I play with 720p LCD projector and the only drawback is a bit of flickery on thin lines(fences, car panels, etc). No lag or interlaced artifacts on this mode, but 1080i with one of the progressive conversion modes = lag and less crisp image but no flicker.

Always play with 1080i native mode, GT5P looks better.

I'm sorry...I did not understand what you're saying above poster; if possible, could you clarify?
Sorry English not's my first languaje.

On my projector I have 3 image modes for 1080i, I play GT5P with the default 1080i mode(no progressive conversion from the 1080i signal) and find it the best mode for the game. On the other 2 modes the interlaced signal is processed to progressive and this add gaming lag and a softer look. If you have lag on 1080i you need to change the settings or image enhancements of your Tv, a good test is turning a wheel on the cockpìt view, the more sync between the real one and the screen = less lag.

I hope this made clear.

ok, got it.

So what do the rest of you do when you only have 720p and 1080i options? i'm curious what the rest of the community uses and why you prefer it?
