Aesthetics
The wheel is mainly made from plastic. However at the 3-9 position there is some lovely Alacantara, which is found on many high end road car wheels including Porsche's. The material feels nice in hand both comfortable and easy to hold onto. It is also set out in an ergonomic way. For example the paddles behind the wheel seem to feel the perfect distance away. They also make a very reassuring and satisfying click so you know when you change gears.

I have commented previously about the possibility that the buttons are too far away from your hands when you are racing on like F1 2011. After having the wheel a while I have discovered that it isn't so bad.

Design/Looks

The wheel design is nice. The wheel looks and feels good. The brushed aluminum gives the wheel a premium look, combined with the Alacantara grips the wheel both looks and feels good. The wheel also feels solid in its build, something that some of the early fanatecs lacked.

The one thing in terms of design that I am not a huge fan of is the wheel clamps. They seem to take a lot longer to set up than wheel clamps from fanatecs competitors such as logitech. This can of course be resolved by either hard mounting a wheel to your rig or by buying the Fanatec Clubsport table clamp.
The clamp however is secure. It just takes a lot longer to install the first time than Logitechs do.

Another thing that could be made easier is way you attach the two poles for mounting the Shifter set. Currently their is a system were you tighten/untighten a screw. This sounds good but it isn't as the screw is made of soft plastic. Whilst I was attaching my shifter set the screw became pretty much useless as the coin i was using bent the seam were you insert the coin meaning the coin has no grip to turn so you cannot turn to tighten the lock.

Features

The wheel includes, like most fanatecs, an LED display which houses the wheels built in wheel settings were you can adjust many wheel settings.
An example of what can be tuned is in the list below which shows Darin Gangi's (from Inside sim racing) wheel settings.
SEN:900
FF:100
SHO:100
DRI: 3
ABS: 65
LIN:0
SPR:0

These settings are for forza motorsport 4. However I have found that thay work quite well on Gran Turismo 5.
another features is the wireless functionality. This is rare now-a-days due to Microsoft's licensing and other things that are too complicated for me to understand fully and explain but i think its something to do with the Xbox's software.

The wheel also had 900 degrees of rotation and 14 buttons. Enough for all console games.

Build Quality

The build quality of this wheel so far has not let it down. The CSR both looks and feels solid. Little things such as the paddles have been greatly improved compared to any previous, If anything i would say they are as good if not better than the G27s.

The plastic rims being made out of two seperate pieces may not be ideal for everyone but as far as I am concerned it makes no difference as long as it is not where you are gripping the wheel.

The rim is made from 4 materials.:
Metal for both the shifter and the core (middle) of the rim.
A rubbery textured bit at the flat bottom part of the rim and around the alacatara.
Alacantara in the areas were you grip the wheel. (3-9 position)
Plastic on the base and the areas of the rims that you wouldn't normally touch.

Force Feedback and driving in general

The force feedback of this wheel is silky smooth. It uses a belt driven mechanism which is seamless no matter what the conditions. The reason Fanatec use a belt driven mechanism is that unlike gear driven wheels their is no break or cogging when turning. The results are very impressive and you feel every bump.

You also know when you lock up your brakes thanks to the vibration motors. The vibrations from this make you immersed in your driving and are extremely useful. The vibration units are not too harsh or too soft they are perfect.

A thing that you notice or rather don't notice whilst driving is the noise of the wheel. Their is no noise. This again is down to the belt driven force feedback rather than the gear driven force feedback found in cheaper wheels.

The force feedback tuning menu is extremely useful. It allows you to fine tune force feedback for all of the games. It also saves 5 of your force feedback settings meaning you can perfect force feedback for 5 games and then save those settings individually for them. You could also use this to perfect five different classes of cars force feedback for one specific title.
For example:
Nascar
LMP cars (prototypes)
Road Cars
Formula 1 cars
Karts.

Of course not everybody wants to bother with this. If your not the type of person that chooses to mess around with settings then you will not be disappointed with the standard plug and play settings.

The force feedback is actually quite strong. It uses a Mabuchi RS550 motor. This motor is the same as the ones that have been used on many previous fanatecs including the 911 GT2/3RS and the Carrera.

There is certainly no noticable deadzone from the time that I used this wheel, and if you see videos with deadzone that is likely down to the person driving having a preferance for deadzone.

Conclusion.

The wheel is a fantastic piece of kit and i would recommend the wheel to anybody. However If you are not after a race like wheel and would prefer a standard car wheel then their are other choices such as the Fanatec 911 GT2/3RS depending on if you need xbox compatibility. Their is also the Thrustmaster T500RS which is a lot more expensive than the the Fanatecs.

This wheel is fantastic and is certainly a much needed accessory for both console and PC racers.

Accessories

CSR ELITE PEDALS

The are a fantastic addition to the wheel above or any Fanatec wheel. They are not fully made of metal. However all of the bits that you come into contact with are made out of machined aluminum. This includes the 3 pedals and the topside of the base were your feet would rest.

The build quality is just fantastic and is almost as impressive as the top of class clubsport pedals that Fanatec produce. The resistance of the brake pedals is really really tough. It means that there shouldn't be any problems with locking up for future owners.

The impressive feature for this in my opinion is the price.
You get a brake pedal equipped with a load cell.. To clarify for some readers a load cell increases the resistance of pedals the further down you push the pedal. For example 50% travel requires much less pressure from you compared to 100% travel.
and some seriously nice aluminum machined pedals for 150$/euros.
Very impressive. The only thing it lacks that the clubsport pedals have is the vibration functions when locking up. This however is not supported by many console titles so console players shouldn't be put off buy this. It is however possible to add this to clubsports manually using wheel settings under ABS.

It does also lack contact-less sensors. I don't see this as a problem as only really hard core sim racers will know what they do.

The pedals, like the clubsports look very simple to adjust. This is not something I would personally do as I am happy with the pedals as they are but for the more adventurous of you it should be quite straight forward. Their is also a possibility to invert your pedals. See picture below for what it should look like.

Overall I believe that the CSR elite pedals are a fantastic purchase and should be considered by all fanatec customers weather they are buying a CSR wheel or any other fanatec wheels.

CSR shifter Set

The CSR shifter set includes both a sequential and H shifter (6+1). I have tested both. The set is very accurate and if it wasn't for me being useless with a manual whilst racing. It would be quite good fun online as well as offline. When I am offline and I am just mucking around on my own I have found It to be relatively fun and it adds something to races.
An example of it adding to races on Gran turismo your AI opponents are extremely slow and boring so with the H shifter you are thinking more about shifting than humiliating the AI. This makes racing more engaging and closer and subdues the Drag of GT5 single player.

For those of you interested in using a manual gear box more for fun than anything else, this is a great budget set with metal sticks. I would recommend as it had a mix of budget and premium features on a relatively low budget price.

Would I recommend all of this

Combined this setup is very good and is certainly a lot better than an entry level sim setup. It is also relatively inexpensive for the products you get..
1x Premium Quality wheel with Xbox compatibility.
1x Premium Quality Pedal set compatible with all Fanatec wheels.
1x Budget metal/plastic shifter set
I would certainly recommend these products to anyone as the positives are endless compared to my 2 tiny gripes.

NOTE: I do not own the wheel.... I reviewed it for my site.

I will be posting a written and video review, and will have a website up and running soon. Just not feeling well-enough at the moment.

But I will review the wheel and shifter of the CSR set.

Well not.once in a straight line has it wobbled. Maybe down to wheel settings???

I have to add deadzone to around 30 degrees to completely eradicate wobble.

Try an X1 on your CSR.

Family holiday christmas...

Too much money to spend on things more important sadly :(

I am not sure how long its gonna be till I can justify spending a largeish amount on myself :(

Just dont eat for a few weeks, its amazing how much you can save. :dopey:
Sounds like a tearful goodbye then, that would be tough particulary with FM4 being so good.

You might want to google the price of the T500RS for the UK and compare it to the CSR package.
Im not so sure about your comment that the "Thrustmaster is a lot more expensive". It doesnt offer as much value for money for sure as the CSR though, however the current prices may surprise you.

So you just ordered it to play with like a kind of free rental? Seems kind of uncool to do to Fanatec...

You're kidding right? They sent it to him to review with the option to buy after.

Still though getting it like you did and with a possible discount, I cant believe your sending it back. Id be trading in any old bits n bobs to get the funds or do something to find the extra money than let the oppertunity pass you by.

The £150 pedals are putting me off this wheel...

That's crazy money for just pedals, is there really no other cheaper option to buy on the Fanatec website?

If I had the money I would have probably have bought it but there wouldn't be much point when you think about it as the CSW is the one for me.

Also I am pretty sure their will be no discount for that wheel due to the price.

To clear things up my site wasn't started for discounts before I get accused

Their are some 69 priced pedals coming soon and the quality looks pretty good

I'm guessing that this will replace the now pretty much aged Porsche standard pedals?

True true... still I myself want a ClubSport Wheel so can't have anything less then ClubSport Pedals. It's already ordered and boxed for shipment according to Fanatec... now where is postman Pat when you need him? lol
Anyhow, just wanted it confirmed for everyone else that didn't know yet. Also I find it good to see those old ones replaced for something new. ^_^

Postman Pat:

I received my CSR today. I got it late in the afternoon and I'm working afternoon shift so I didn't get time to bolt it to my rig to give it a try but I did unbox it to check out it's construction and such.

Impressions:

There's too much being made of the "cheap plastic" parts of the rim. The pictures online don't show it but it should be made clear: Although the gloss black portions are indeed plastic it it not low grade or flimsy in anyway....it feels very solid and is not snapped together....it is secured by numerous screws. The seam is very smooth and is of no concern (at least in my eyes) Also of note.....this is not molded gloss black plastic. The plastic areas of the wheel rim are actually painted gloss black and finished very well giving a richness to the finish. The finish matches the gloss black painted finish of the base housing. Alcantara on the whole wheel would have been the bees knees but the design choice here is perfectly acceptable and unique looking.

All the buttons on the wheel have a nice tactile action to them and have a solid click when pressed. None of the buttons feel anything like what is on my PWTS.

The shifter paddles are IMMENSELY improved over previous Fanatec wheels. They are easy to reach, have a comfortable shape and just plain feel great when engaging them for gear changes. If you have tried the paddles on the G25/27 and like those you will love these. They're the best feeling shifter paddles on any wheel I've tried.

The joystick is a bit of a wet noodle. It's a bit sloppy as it has a fair amount of play in it. However it should be noted it is not an analogue joystick.....when you push it in a given direction it's actually actuating a tactile button. It's basically a D-Pad but done differently. The joystick is the only thing that feels a bit out of place in terms of a quality feel compared to the rest of the wheel.

The wheel itself feels very nice in your hands. The grips feel natural and ergonomically designed. The rubber section doesn't feel cheap or gummy and the alcantara pads are comfortable to hold. The wheel also has a lot less play in the shaft compared to my PWTS. My PWTS wheel can be wiggled around a bit up and down but this one has very little movement at all. The wheel itself is 1/8'' aluminum with a nice brushed finish and has very little flex.

The gloss black base with orange/red vents looks great and the finish is top notch.

Thats all for now until a test drive but so far I'm liking what I've experienced so far.

Edit: After some testing

Just did a few laps on Forza 4 right after doing some with my PWTS. Transferred all my PWTS settings to the CSR.

As I mentioned earlier....the wheel feels great in your hands and at least for me anyway has a nice comfortable and natural grip.....I don't feel like I'm doing anything unnatural in terms of my grip so it's easy to have your hands relax which makes driving easier. The way your thumbs hook around the grips makes it really easy to control the wheel when the FFB gets strong.

Speaking of FFB it feels stronger to me than my PWTS. It also feels more refined so to speak. I think the combination of the lighter wheel and perhaps some tweaking on the motor control electronics by Fanatec has this providing the best FFB of any Fanatec wheel to date. The differences are not mind blowing compared to previous products but they are noticeable. Shaun Cole on ISR talked about feeling the subtleties with the CSR and I think he nailed the observation. You notice very subtle changes in the FFB in this wheel when vehicle dynamics are going through small changes.....things like small bumps, momentary losses of grip, when the front of the car gets light over minute elevation changes....that sort of stuff. I think the older Porsche wheels with the higher center mass absorbed and perhaps took away some of that but with this wheel being so light and made with the materials it is made from does a better job of transferring that stuff. Same goes for the vibration motors in the wheel rim that provide ABS vibtration....it is more pronounced in this wheel than my PWTS. And it goes without saying that the FFB is butter smooth and feels natural like a real car .

The paddle shifters are superb.....there's nothing more to say there. In my mind they're the new standard for feel, comfort and ergonomic location. Many people have asked about the button placement. Being 6 feet tall I don't have small hands so I didnt find the button location a problem for me.....I could easily reach any of the four red buttons with my thumbs without shifting my grip.

All in all I really love the wheel and consider it a step up from my PWTS in every way except for one thing:

And here's my gripe. For some reason or another this wheel makes a very annoying, high pitched whining noise when in XBOX mode. Its not the fans either...it is something else entirely. And it's not quiet either. If you play at low volume you'll clearly hear it and it will likely annoy you. Its a similar sound Ive heard to when a fan is going bad in a PC. The sound apears to be coming from the FFB area of the wheel......be it the FFB motor or it's controller. Its hard to tell without cracking it open to investigate. My PWTS is dead quiet in comparison. I know many others have complained about the problem to Fanatec on the 911wheel.de blog and Fanatec has responded by saying they are looking to a solution for it as it doesn't make the same sound in PC or PS3 mode. Hopefully its something that can be fixed with a firmware update.

Also of note....my wheel up to this point anyway is not experiencing the settings save issue that some others have complained about.

So there you have it. Now excuse me while I go do some Forza.

Ups delivers saturdays, but at an extra fee when ordering. They do not deliver sundays.

@thehawk05: Very nice write up of your views of the wheel. I find the choice of the joystick a weird one as it acts as a d-pad, especially if it is as you describe... a wet noodle. Somehow my gut feeling tells me that Microsoft had some say in how the controls should be in order to get the official Forza signature so to speak. I simply think this because Microsoft and its xbox usually work with very tight guidelines, especially with things xbox related.
One of the other concerns and I think other people would like to know, especially when it comes to looks. The glossy black on the wheel and the base, how fingerprint proof is it?
