I should probably explain a little better....

I am a 24 year old man.

I know how to shave, thats not the problem.

My problem is my hair is quite corse on my face, and i'm finding whenever I use these new fangled 4 blade+ razors, all they do is clog up, the hair wont rinse out and all it does is irritate my skin because i'm dragging the stubble thats stuck in the blade across my face.

I currently use a Wilkinson sword Quattro Titanium, I have seen the new gillette Pro-glides ect but they have even more blades!

Question is, does this happen with all mulit-blade razors or is mine just crap, or am I doing something wrong?

Thankyou for your time
👍

How long are you letting your stubble go?

Mine sometimes clogs up (have the same razor, I think), but normally it comes out when I rinse the razor (failing that, a scrubbing brush going with the blade). Maybe you are trying to shave too much in one stroke?

What foam/soap do you use?

Get some Proraso and just shave with shorter strokes rinsing the blade more often. I also find that shaving in the shower makes things 100x easier.

I cant shave with creams or anything... I only use a bit of water... I only shave about once a week though... Not an everyday shaver.

1. If I did I'd be a pimply faced freak because my skin doesnt like it everyday and gets irritated.
2. I hate shaving
3. I like a bit of a beard.. :)

Nowadays when I shave I use a trimmer first and trim my beard as short as I can... Then I wet my face and shave with a razor.... I also NEVER go against the grain for that baby smooth look, because again... the skin on my face does not agree.... It has taken me many years to find a way of shaving without overly irritating my skin and this is it... :p

For the OP:

Just like Sureboss asked... how long do you let your beard and such grow before you shave? This could be the solution, because if I try and shave and my beard is too long I run into the problems you described.

I use Loreal mens expert sensitive skin blah blah gel, its blue lol

I dont shave in the shower, maybe I should start? I use the sink and mirror mainly because I miss bits alot :(

The razor gets so clogged I have to use a brush to clean it out like sureboss mentioned...

My strokes are fairly short I think, maybe an inch at most?

I was wondering if the blades are too close together? maybe the pro-gilde would have wider spaced blades....

I normally shave every 3 days, simply because my skin is knackered after a wet shave, I have an electric shaver but that is also irritating, and besides, a wet shave is closer!

I've recently gone back to using a 3 blade Gillette Mach3 after using a Quattro Titanium for a while. Four or five blade razors just have the blades closer together - so are bound to clog up more. I'd also use a foam/gel that doesn't lather up so much, it's just more gunk to clog your blades.

Wow, Mike, are you Chewbacca? Does your schick have those thumb metal bars on the backside of the blades? That could be what's clogging it. I never liked Schick razors. I use a gillette fusion and even that doesn't get clogged.

If your skin is that bad after a shave then you probably aren't doing it right. You're not pressing down on the razor, are you? Don't.

I was just looking at them, before I used a 2 blade Sensor excell and that was great, but I fancied something more modern thinking it would be better....doh!

I like the look of the Mach 3 power...

I loved that razor... I use the Fusion 5 blade nowadays... But Mach 3 was by far the best one i've used IMO.

i only shave weekly due to the same reason as yourself, very course hair, but the number 1 thing for me is a decent clippers to take most of the hair off, this will suffice by itself it is is a wet/dry clippers with ceramic teeth, almost as good as a razor.

use a clippers first (same kind you'd use on your head).

use shaving oil / baby oil

use a very hot facecloth to soften up the hair (as hot as you can stand for 3-5 mins) this will also do wonders for your skin.

rince the razor after every stroke

down on the face up on the neck

rince with cold water after (as cold as you can stand)

use a aftershave balm / moisturiser

after a few weeks the hair willl not be as tough for the razor to cut, the moisturiser is absorbed into the folicle and softens the hair from the root.

I am a seriously hairy Mo-fo lol

I guess my stubble is maybe 3-5mm long by the time I shave, is it simply that im letting it get too long?

I want to try the new gillette Pro-glides as there meant to be good right?

Just hate the damn things clogging up so much, its like 3 strokes and its completely clogged up, then 2 minutes scrubbing it and rinsing it...takes forever to shave!

I think the clippers before you shave like dublee and I mentioned would help you out... :)

I can shake all the trapped gunk out of a Mach 3 in water. When i was using the Wilkinson Sword (Schick for our US brothers) Titanium i had to use an old tooth brush, like Nigel said, to clean the blades between strokes. Just made shaving 3 times longer.

Thats why I brought the Quattro, its great because it has the electric timmer on the bottom (which btw is great for sideburns), so i trim the stubble with that then go over with the razor, but even then it still clogs, ALOT

I expect some clogging but it is ridiculous!

I use a trimmer to "wear" the hair down so I can then shave it off with no fuss.

I have coarse hair to on my face and just trying to shave without trimming it down is a pain because the hairs clog up my Gillette Mach 3 turbo.

By the way, I don't think there's any difference between the Mach 3 and Mach 3 turbo.

I dont know about you but with what the price for mach3 blades is ireland, lazer removal is a very affordable option. 1 or 2 years worth of blades = cost of lazer removal

Think I will try my quattro in the shower tonight and see how it goes....failing that I may buy a Gillette Fusion?

Do you use any aftershave? For ages I couldn't find a combination of foam/aftershave that worked (I have sensitive skin :ghey:). I currently use Gillette Pure & Sensitive for the foam and Gillette Aftershave Balm for aftershave, which I have to use, or my face could be camouflaged in a sea of baboon arse.

As mentioned by dublee, use the water as hot as possible (not out the kettle obviously, but you should be able to cope with nothing but water from the hot tap), maybe even use a shaving brush to get the stubble standing to attention, that's why a lot of people shave in the shower, the heat and repetition of the water helps soften the hair and skin.

You should definitely try shaving oil as well although only in the shower as you need plenty of hot water on your face (as everyone has said) and the blade to make it work properly, plus the oil and hair will make your sink look like someone has ripped a tea bag in it but it doesn't seem to be a problem in the shower.

I only use King Of Shaves and Nivea face stuff, they both seem a bit expensive compared to others but I find them to be the best.

Shaving is manly...talking about face cream is not

Yep same, I've been using the Mach 3 for years and tried the Quattro only to have the same clogging issues with no gain. I am back to the old trusty Mach 3 again.

I have been using the Gillette fusion(4 blades) and when it does get clogged up I run some water on it and then use my finger to move the hairs(not against the blades of course). I never use any type of shaving gel and I just splash handfuls of water on my face. I find it to be best when my face is washed down with water several times and then shave.

I always run with the grain and then when it's gone but you can still feel it, go against the grain. Then you face should be baby skin smooth.

"Ain't got time to bleed"

(Yes i know it's a different character who says it)

Lol, good advice guys thanks!

Been looking at the king of shaves Azur razor...that looks like the crap would wash out the blades pretty easy.

What you think?

I use the same razor. The blades get clogged up very easily. I shave every day in the shower. Seems the best way, as the blades don't get clogged as easy as there's less to shave. Constantly rinse it out under the shower head though.

When I let it grow a few days, it can be a pain to shave... FYI, I used to use a gillette mach 3 and I never had any problems with it. I left it somewhere on my travels. I only bought the wilkinson sword as it was £1 cheaper... Maybe trying another razor might help.

Like someone else who posted in this thread, electric razors just seem to irritate my skin. I've had 2. One with the "foil" and one with three wheels. All they seemed to do was irritate my skin and they didn't do a great job of shaving. FYI, for those who use an electric razor and take it with them on holiday or travelling or to some situation where you need to use it but can't get near an ac socket. If it's running out of battery and you can't plug it in, don't use it. It'll only slow down and start pulling hairs out. I found this out the hard way. :dunce:

I don't use any shaving products as I'm allergic to certain soaps, shampoos and conditioners hence why I shave in the shower using a soap i'm not allergic to.

Can't you ask your dad about all this? You can even ask your mom if you're Greek or Italian.

Have a nice hot face wash before. Lots of soap and hot water, lots of lather, rinse with more hot water, then apply your foam. I tend to quickly go against the grain first, then re lather and go again with the grain. The more lubricant the better results will be (no innuendo intended!).

And frequently tap the razor on the sink to clear the blades.

Lol, my dad couldn't be arsed to teach me when i was 12, why would he teach me when i'm 24?!

Its not a case of not knowing how to shave (I think), its finding a Razor that is easy to clean unlike the PITA Wilkinson Sword Quattro

I just brought a King of Shaves razor, and Shave gel, will let you know how it goes, first impressions are good, The back of the head is open so it looks nice and easy to clean out, plus the handle is aluminium (or alooooomi'numb for you americano's ;) )

....Do you not have access to one of those old style razors that uses a single double sided blade?

That was a godsend actually, for clearing away stubble before using a razor for that ultra smooth feel after growing a bush on the face....Cheap too, although it does require some experimentation.
