A different HD problem

I've tried to connect my PS2 (SCPH-39003) to a 26" sharp aquos TV using a component cable set i bought off the net. The cables transmit a 480i signal OK, but nothing else. I select the Y Rb/Rg setting on the main screen and put GT4 in, and the game loads but everything is 480i, nothing appears in HD, despite the TV being set to HD. I then tried setting the PS2 to "RGB" which resulted in a picture occasionally appearing, then a few random colours and then a 'no signal' input. I'm not able to connect the cables to a PC monitor and test them that way because I can't find the Component-VGA cable I had. :grumpy:
But surely, even though the TV only does 768p I should be able to run GT4 in something above 480i?

Moved this into the electronics thread (with a redirect where you posted it)... hopefully you'll get more specific help in here...

Do you have the game display set to 16:9? You have to set that in the options. Also, the PS2 has to be set to 16:9 as well I believe.

Did you set up your PS2 propberly? You must have if you get a pic using the component cables. Is your component input high-def, or standard-def? Are you answering the question properly? Are you changing back to 1080i everytime you start up GT4? You have to, BTW. It wont save it on 1080i permanently. You know the menu and map pages are 480i only, but the racing is 1080i, right?

Didn't I see somewhere that 1080i is only in the NA (NTSC) version, not in PAL? As for "something over 480i," the only selection in GT4 above 480i is 1080i, and if you're limited to 768p, that's not in there. In-game, go to Options, then Screen Settings, then Video Output. Is 1080i even a choice on that screen? If not, then it's not in your version.

A progressive monitor that does can handle 720p (or 768p for computer monitors) should be able to accept a 1080i input. Mine does.

Just do like they mentioned above. PS2 set for 1080i and adjust your GT4 video settings for 1080i. You wont really see GT4 in 1080i until you go to drive onto the track. THATS when you will see a huge difference. It will also usually go right to wide screen.
Also like mentioned above you will have to set GT4 for 1080i every time you put the game in. Yes I know its a pain but its not really that bad and only takes about 5 seconds in the options menu.
Also make sure where the component cable plugs into the PS2 that it is set to HD. Some have this adjustment and others dont.

Just thought I'd add my two cents.
On my DLP tv GT4 does'nt fill the width of the screen in 16:9. As a matter of fact none of my 16:9 games do; Tekken 5, Soul Calibur III, Resi 4 etc. It would seem flat screen tv's like DLP's, LCD's etc have a larger visible screen than CRT tv's. Hence the borders.
However games on my 360 are border free as the games have been developed for flat screen tv's in mind. I'd think the same will be the case for PS3 games too.
