AVOID THE CONTOUR AT ALL COSTS!

We had a '98 Contour for several years. It didn't even make it to 200,000 kms. Had major transmission problems (although it was an automatic), among other things. The interior also started falling apart after a while. I was under the impression that it was an American car, not a Brit. Funny stuff...

Two things, one Contours are decent cars partly because they are British. American born sedans were crap before 2000. Secondly, they aren't all that bad. My stepdad owned one and it lasted 200,000 miles, and a good friend of mine had a SVT and we drove the **** out of it--he/we put 175,000 miles on it before he traded it in for a pickup truck (big mistake). For little or no money you can buy a Contour SVT AND get the engine/tranny rebuilt and it will be a fantastic sport sedan.

I'd still prefer a Maxima, G35 Sedan, S4, or SE-R Sentras. The Altima is a decent choice--if you can get over that hideous rear end or a BM 3-series...any you can afford.

Hideous rear-end my a$$!... oh, if you're talking about the old Altima... why, yes, it is!

*sigh* if I had some extra money for a project car... the Altimas here come with SR20DEs... major swappage possible.

Again, I reiterate, avoid first and second year Sentra SE-Rs... most owners have had the cats fixed under the recall, but you never know...

My thoughts exactly. If the Maxima was RWD and had a manual transmission available, it would be one of my favourite cars.

But if the Japanese were smart enough to embrace RWD, manual transmissions, and the ability to turn TCS/stabillity control completely off, they'd have the Europeans and Americans positively beaten...
