Starts with me having to buy GT5 all over again.
Being one of the many people who can't use the latest DLC content on my current set up the only way I would be able to access this stuff would be to purchase another copy of GT5. So that's what I did.
I found a used copy of it in a store near my place for 5,280 yen (it was discounted because the case was marked). Yes, that's right. Now you know why I purchased the Asian version on launch day. I got the Asian version new for less than what I just paid to get the Japanese version used a year after its release. I figured that if PD is going to institute this kind of system for future 'DLC' then I should just take the plunge and get the game that matches my PSN. I also had 1,800 yen sitting around in my PSN wallet so I wouldn't need to pay any more at this time for the DLC. I want Spa!
Buying a new copy of the game means starting all over again. But what a way to start. Upon my return home from the store I loaded the disc into the PSN, and then had to wait for 40 minutes while it downloaded Spec II, then had to wait another 40 minutes while it installed the game on my Hard Drive. And then I went to the PSN and bought the pack, then loaded the game, went through all the beginning setups, installed the tracks, gear, paints, and whatever else came with the complete pack. I got a little bonus in the form of 3 cards I downloaded from the Japanese PSN for free last Christmas.
Chromeline versions of the:
Jaguar XJ13 Race Car
Lamborghini Murcielago LP640
BMW M3 Coupe
I actually forgot I had these on my Hard Drive. Last year when I downloaded them I was unable to use them with my Asian game save so they just sat there. Thinking back, this was the first warning that PD might be doing something with different regions so the latest DLC should not have come as a surprise to me. (I don't get access to the 4 stealth cars that were bonuses with the Asian release. Oh well)
I then used gift tickets for the Toyota Prius TC, the CR-Z TC, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 TC and the Red Bull X2011 Prototype.
My garage looked like this:
I had enough cars to get a good head start on the game.
I first took the BMW through the Sunday Cup. Good car, not so great tires but I'm not going to spend any money on racing tires when I don't need them.
The Toyota Prius TC ran a few races. It's a dog. I laughed when the little red gear indicator flashed that I should be in D for the next corner when I was already in D.
The Honda CR-Z TC is a fantastic car! It drove like it was on rails. I used it for the majority of races it was eligible to enter.
The Jaguar XJ13 easily crushed the competition in the World Classic Car and European Classic Car races.
For the FR race I opted not to use the Challenger TC and instead I used the ticket for the GT-R R35 TC but that is a 4WD car. Oops.
(Speaking of oops, PD made a big one. When driving the GT-R R35 TC later on Spa, I was in cockpit view admiring the dashboard and hit the L1 button to look behind me. There was no cockpit rear view. Someone forgot to design it? The other Premium TC cars I drove had the cockpit rear view.)
So for the FR race I used the RX-7 TC. That thing is also on rails. These DLC cars make things too easy!
I guess starting all over again isn't going to be too bad after all.
But I do have a bit of a mystery to solve. I now have two different GT5 game saves under my PSN ID. If I am gifted a car, which GT5 game save gets it? Hmm... The one that boots up first? I can't gift cars to myself under the same PSN, so to move all my cars from my Asian save I will have to go through a third account. I wonder if I receive the same car on each save? Only one way to find out.
