Hi
I was wondering how do you know If a account is the same person as someone else. I was looking in the banned user log and wondering how the mods know instantly that it is the same person making a new account?

Actually, there's a variety of ways - some of which are circumstancial and some more arcane and definitive.

A good first clue is when someone with a low post count turns up and continues an argument from someone banned (usually for having that argument in a less than friendly manner) - especially if the new poster has registered within the same week the previous one was banned. Posting habits are usually the tip-off required for moderators to hunt out more connections.

Easy. IP Check. Nearly all forums have the icon/feature for it, tucked away only for those allowed by the Admin to see (i.e. Mods).

Also, having a username like "GTjazzabrandy" when there is a banned user named "Jazza" tends to make us sit up and pay attention.

Haha lol.

I'm abit suspicious because he asked this question in the first place.

I'm not going to do anything stupid like that I was just interested:)
And then he pops out that point there:).

But I thought it was IP, in the 5 or so forums I have run in the oast they all have IP addresses underneath your avatar I think.

If that were the case, I'd have banned you at the same time as I banned your friend hibbiggibies...

Can't rely on IP checks, they aren't completely unique. On another site we've banned people on IP, only to later find we were wrong. It helps. Other things like sign up e-mail address, time zones. As the mods have said posting styles, usernames, coincidences, etc.

Lots of homes have dynamic IP addresss so a ban only lasts until the user reboots their router.

No one has managed to outlast us using a dynamic IP yet, at least not without becoming a completely different person and joining the ranks of the constructive citizens to the point that we could no longer tell who they were.

Which solves the problem in an even better way. 👍
