The problem:
While learning a new circuit, I am usually 2 seconds lower than I should be and will be in the end.
Entering a race at this point will result in massive hits to both DR and SR.

The solution:
Offer Practice races in addition to the standard, rated ones.
Matching is done by qualifying time only.

I actualy think you might be on to something.
I often get matched with people with a race pace 1.5 to 2.5 seconds a lap faster the I am, my DR lowered slowly over the last couple of months and I found myself often wondering why I'm not matched with people with a race pace closer to mine, there are always a few in each race and also slower ones so there must be a lot more out there. The racing experience would be much more intense, closer racing and much more fun.

I don’t get it. Why not just run qualifying time trials until you feel ready? You know you can do it without having to enter races.

Current system is better anyhow, as it will try to match both my time and rating. What you’re proposing (just time) means higher rated drivers can sandbag qualifying to pick up easy wins - no thanks!

Lobbies are the way to go. Either find a nice group of people to race against, and then friend them so you can find them again.
Or do the FIA races, and just do practice races for them in lobbies.

Since the change to weekly races I can't qualify in a decent position as I am unwilling to put in the practice required. As such I am mostly racing in lobbies these days.

That would need refining, like the FIA sessions. It's not a bad idea. Just requires a way for people to enter Practice.

Say Race A= 10 cars max in Practice Mode, Race B=16, Race C=20. It's not a silly idea. By having a "track day" session in Practice, it's more as a way to not open your own lobby. Cars could ghost and you still have players exiting and entering.

I have mentioned before, I don't host rooms and I've only been in one Lobby since I bought the game in March. A Practice session, with players in Sport Mode, can work. Doesn't make a Lobby redundant. Sport Mode may as well be redundant to a Lobby.

Well, with the new Region matching coming, it's nearly going to be like an Open Lobby. No doubt there will be the same people you race against more frequently.

I think it would work if the player base was larger. Right now, the player base is so small that A+ drivers are matched with B, C and D drivers. Practice races could split the player base even more

Anything that allows less experienced players a chance to refine their race craft, whatever the circumstances, is a good thing.
It’s not a good thing. This is what lobbies are for, if you are serious about getting faster race with better drivers in races that mean something. Races to get you adrenaline up. Races that make you sharper and faster.

That's not always available to many people. Nevermind the community on this site. How about those that aren't linked to this community? That may well be the majority of GT players.

This affords those people the chance to race faster, cleaner players. A possibility to build their race craft.

I'm just one player, but Sport Mode brought me out of my offline comfort zone. Something like this, as trivial as it is to some players, could be a godsend to others.

I don't know how many players regularly use Sport Mode, but my guess that there aren't very many.

We already have Lobbies, Campaign, Custom races in addition to Sport Mode - so I am not sure another option is needed or even helpful.

The matching threw me in with this lot last night.
