A serious issue...

I agree with GC. So some people didn't pass grammar with flying colors; BIG DEAL. That's mental capacity discrimination, which should be limited to schools. If you can't accept the fact that some people aren't quite as smart as you are then you probably should be over at the GTF, where big egos reign freely. People over there are constantly flaming on others, which drives the board moralle down the drain. Be nice to those people who aren't "as smart as you are" or leave.

I said the one in the middle. It was a joke, but apparently some people don't have much of a sense of humor. I gurantee you even Colleen knew I was joking when I said it to her.

If English is your first language, and you type like some illiterate 6 year old I'm going to give you a hard time unless you're honestly doing the best you can. If English is your second language, and you have some difficulty with it, I'll stick up for you when others give you a hard time. I'm here to read, and talk to other people. I'm not here to decipher what some lazy ass 12 year olds are saying to each other with their stupid internet talk.

* No slang words that promote laziness, ie; "r", "u", "plz", etc.

* Half decent grammar is expected. Use of capital letters
starting sentences is looked upon favorably. Spelling
half decently is also encouraged.

👍 👍

I don't really get on peoples cases for using poor spelling and abreviated words and I will agree with Giancarlo somewhat, that some people have taken it to an extreme when approaching others about there spelling and grammar. However, I am more inclined to agree with Josh's statement of:

I'm here to read, and talk to other people. I'm not here to decipher what some lazy ass 12 year olds are saying to each other with their stupid internet talk.

And like Josh pointed out, these topics are addressed in the TOS and should be adhered to, to the best of the persons abilities. It's rather obvious when someone is being lazy or typing in that "internet talk" that Josh put it, and in my opinion, purpously typing in such a manner is a poor showing of ones character.

Alpha, i hardly ever capitalise my "i", only when it's on the front of a sentence...:D I think they don't capitalise their "i"s England either.

Yes we do.

It's a difficult situation. I'm generally extremely intolerant of ignorant mistakes. Trust me, you'll be onto a loser if you ever send me a letter entitled "Dear Mr Guthrey"... It happens a lot.

However, I know of some very intelligent people here at GTP (and no, I'm not going to name them) who are APPALLING at spelling. But it doesn't stop me talking to them. As far as I know, they may be dyslexic, or from Brazil.

There is, however, a difference between these people and the people who are being criticised for their typing style, whom josh referred to as " ass 12 year olds ... with their stupid internet talk". These people come into the following category:

If you can't be bothered constructing a proper message, you are automatically denigrating what you're writing. If it's not worth taking a little care over writing, then it's probably not worth writing at all.

It is not a dodo, it is not a kiwibird, it is plain and simple, a kiwi.

In the 'even more smilies' category, it is labeled as 'dodo.' Its image tag, as Omar said, used to be :dodo:. You're crazy.

Giles rules.

Oh, and, kiwis are fruits from that New Zealand place. California makes them too, but they're itty-bitty.

I agree wholehartedly with what most of the older members have said... if someone has trouble with English, fine, I can live. If you're purposely trying ti either look "cool" with your Internet speak or are too lazy to use the shift key as well as periods and commas, then there are some issues. What these kids don't realize is how incredibly difficult and time consuming it is to try and decipher those posts... I have to re-read them about 4 or 5 times before I can even vaguely make out what the poster is trying to say, and I don't like that. If you make the kinds of mistakes that would normally be captured by Microsoft Word's Autocorrect, then no biggie... but if you make totally incomprehensible sentences that looks like a string of programming code, well...

I'm going to inject my own, original, never before discussed opinion:

Just my viewpoint.

I agree. Very well done, Doug. Did you type it up in Word?

<I swear>From this day on, I shall try to type as good as possible in the Rumble Strip. </I swear>

The only reason I use "net speak" is.. yes.. laziness. I think I'll stop now.. makes me look so.. immature.. lol

Because, in all sincerity, Word kicks ass. For the kind of things I need to do, I definitely need Word... Apple's word processing apps can't (nor any other word processing apps) hold a candle to Word. I can fight all day long about how bad Microsoft's operating system is, but in the same breath I'll defend how great its Office applications are. :)

They are called Chinese Gooseberries but we stole them from China because they grew better here. We called them Kiwifruit.

A kiwi however is a flightless native bird to New Zealand.

Hear! Hear! Spoken like somebody who knows how to read.

Different people expect different things. Some people expect to read sentences that express complete thoughts, and they use them, too. Sadly, others expect to recognize some code that tells them there are cool people afoot.

The English language is more than adequate to express just about anything you could imagine. The notion that it has somehow been improved by omitting punctuation (which is actually there for a reason), capitalization (also there for a reason), and any sense of coherency whatsoever is irritating. And being irritated is not the same as being angry, contrary to what Giancarlo's half-baked analysis would have you believe.

Of course if English is your second language or you can't type well, this is another issue altogether, and people can tell the difference.

I have actually learned a few things by taking note of various criticizms here. I no longer mix up loose and lose, for example. I know there's at least one more but I can't remember it right now. Now I could've whined like an incomprehensible baby and used a barrage of smileys(, etc) at whoever pointed this out to me, but instead I'm glad to have learned something. So if you get corrected try being grateful and improve your communication skills. This will only benefit you.

And lastly, as far as Giancarlo's use of my "dense" quote... I was not referring to anyone's writing, but rather the inability to comprehend satire, which is what Doug's "relationship problem" thread is. In fact, the ability to pick up on satire (and sarcasm), which is subtle and requires a certain cerebral acumen, is a very reliable guage of intelligence or lack thereof. I stick by my statement: "I am truly astounded at how dense you people are." Although maybe I could expand it to include "entertained".

I was just saying that the irritation towards those with improper grammar or relationship problems was slowly turning into anger. At least, that's what i meant.

And joking about being angry, actually, is no better than actually being angry. Is it even really that funny?

Advice for *: Stop being a puss.

I will claim that post, I don't apologize for it, though.

On the subject of grammar and spelling...
It is not very hard, even if you do have trouble with spelling, to take a couple of seconds to go back through what you said, and change a few typos. If you can't spell a word, that's fine, if you're too lazy to correct a few dumb and obvious typos, or you feel like replacing 'you' and 'your' with 'u' and 'ur', then you have most likely lost my respect, and I will probably not take your posts as seriously as those of somebody who at least makes an effort. Give it a try, you'll see the difference in how people respond to your posts.

I disagree, if you're truly puzzled with the spelling of a certain word, you might as well just look it up (for future reference as well).
