A Strange "Instant Messenger" request

OK, so I know about MSN and AIM etc. but I was wondering if there was a simple program that would be permanently on and would allow me and my dad to communicate via the computers since we are as far away from each other in the house as we can be. It's just that I had some technical difficulty earlier and I had to run back and forth trying things out while he researched it and I was knackered by the end of it. Is there a simple PC-to-PC chat facility that anyone knows of?

How about netmeeting, we could communicate pc to pc in our school, untill they deleted netmeeting.

remote desktop is designed to HELP people that dont know what they are doing, i dont really see the use here, as it could only be communicating when you type on the screen.

netmeeting is a good program that comes with your computer... BUT: so does MSN...

skype? if you have microphones, you can talk.

also, the messenger service... but you both need to hook up directly to the internet.

go into a Java chatroom?

im all out of ideas.

I'm pretty sure that when using netmeeting you don't have to be connected to the web - we contacted individual computers, for example b303 called b410.
