A suggestion for new members

Thought of this a while ago, whilst I was looking through PMs on a new forum. This forum sends out "newbie PMs" to new members with various notes one should take to mind.

So many new members get told to search and/or read the stickies. Which is fine, but I see people getting aggitated about being told/telling newbs to do this.

So my suggestion would be to send a PM with a few simple points and links to the Stickies that they're supposed to be reading (particularly for the GT4 section as that seems to be where they most get told off).

Just an idea.

Not a bad idea. I can see a post in the forum can be a little embarassing to the Noob whos recieving all this advice (It can also make the member posting it look a bit "High Up") But yeah, not a bad idea 👍.

The only problem I can see with it, is that people don't always read the welcome PM, I know I don't normally. But other than that, seems like a great idea.

Ditto. That is true though - the least we can do is try :)

At the end of the day, 99% of what they get told is in the AUP, if they don't read that then why would they read the PM.

We have the rumble strip, people introdce themselves in there. I don't think enough people actually bother with introduction threads when they join to warrant a sub forum for it.

No one did, that's the suggestion, that people do. I don't see much point in it though tbh, I can see it taking up a lot space on the server for not much gain.

This is really a good idea, but I believe such a message would be better off included in the welcome email sent to new members rather than a PM. The average user who is not accustomed to forums are not usually familiar with vBulletin and may very easily overlook the message. I know many of my friends would not know to look for it, but they would read a message sent to their email. Also, aside from the fact that many people would probably not read it, even fewer would actually delete it, and our PM's do take up precious space in our database without actually giving much back to the site. Emails are gone and out the door and also have a much better chance of getting read.

So, it's a good suggestion and one that I will implement, only with emails rather than PM's. :)

That was going to be my next point, I know that there are a couple of forum that I used to go to that give site news via PM, 3 times a week! Think of the amount of people with full inboxes that haven't come back after posting once! The server will soon get full.

Great idea <_Spike_>, it has to be said, and has been:tup:
Not only could this reduce the number of redundant threads, it could save people from having to consitingly inform new users about the AUP etc.. And could, as is sometimes the case, prevent unintentional quarrells.

I think its just people that are new to forums that are normally the tards. Someone that has come over from another forum is normally preety good.

Yay, I helped. lol

Good point there Jordan, didn't think of that so good fix to my suggestion 👍

Newbie here.

Perhaps the reason not many people introduce themselves is due to the lack of an obvious Introductions sub-forum?

post count=1.
Now to find an appropriate place to address another Issue...

Yes most forums I've been on have a newbie forum or introduction forum, but there is not one here. Just use the rumble strip, that's what people have done so far.
