Has anyone seen these things? They actually sound very cool and I think it may be an interesting championship. 👍
A1 Grand Prix is an all new, FIA approved, international winter racing series set to bring a new dimension to the world of motorsport. A1 Grand Prix is built around a sound business model, which insures profitability for all teams involved. This championship will pit drivers, racing for the pride of their countires, in one make of high performance A1 Grand Prix car powered by a 520 bhp bespoke 3.4 litre 90 degree V8 engine.

Discuss anything to do with A1GP here :D

definately interesting, will be intrigeuing to see how it goes, i think its a good format for everyone to have hte same car, & Australia are entering a team too.

one thought, will the wheels be that big on the race cars, they would most liekly be faster with a smaller wheel & higher profile tyre close to that of F1

Alan Jones owns the Australian franchise but the driver has not been announced yet. Alan's son is one of the drivers being considered but Alan has said he will have to work for the drive just like any other driver.
Eastern Creek is supposed to be the favourite for the Australian round. The reasoning being that Victoria has the F1, Queensland has the Champ Cars, South Australia has the Clipsal 500, Western Australia has the WRC and New South Wales has... nothing.

BATHURST!!!! although its really not possible as it would not be flat enough for these cars. Eastern creek would be the perfect spot for the event, the A1 cars would be rather exciting aorund the eastern creek although i think the size of the track really would really keep thse cars hemmed in a bit, but there would be some exciting moves gonig into the right hander jsut after the rise, last year some of the moves Craig Loundes pulled in the wet on that corner was jsut amazing, ad htats in V8 supercars, fast but not the most nimble of beasts

Sounds like an interesting championship. I reckon Eastern Creek would be a great track for the series!

I doubt they would commit to Oran Park as they would only get one maybe two races there before it closes down.
I would obviously like to see it at Eastern Creek because then I could go but I don't think EC is anything special. A championship that visits several countries deserves a top notch venue and EC doesn't qualify in my opinion.

Of course Oran is never going to happen, I just like the track .... Adelaide wouldn't be too bad though, would be a good place to hold it IMO.

This was on 5th gear in the UK last night, Jason Plato drove one of these cars in dubai and he said they where awsome. Apparently they feel like F3000 cars but with a lot more downforce.

There will be 25 teams, each team representing a different country driving the exact same car, with same engine, and tyres. The car will have no driver aids (which should make things interesting). And best of all it will be run in the winter months (finally something to watch over winter), First race will be at Brands Hatch curcuit in the UK in september 👍

I saw something about this on TV just this morning. There was a test session at Eastern Creek, the car was pretty damn fast, sounds nice too

that's a pretty cool concept. Keeping the cars the same will make it like F1 stock car racing. Hopefully it'll have some air time in the States. All I usually get to see is NASCAR. :yuck: I usually go play GT3 when that happens.

Actually, on their site there is a USA location shown and it appears to be in Kentucky or Tennessee. Only speedways thereabouts are Bristol (yowza) and Kentucky Speedway. Neither are very exciting, oval courses. And honestly, an F1 race in Bristol is just asking to get someone killed. So it's prolly Kentucky Speedway unless I'm forgetting some track or other.

I think maybe what you're seeing could just be randomly placed there, or maybe just where the team could be located

I think I read somewhere that the one in the picture that blake posted was made in memory of the tsunami victims. Those wheels are pretty weird on it though, they look like they've been lifted off a touring car or something.

A1GP has just had its first team test session. The test was at Silverstone, one of the short versions by the lap times.

Article

Country Fastest Lap Laps
Great Britain 48.888 57 laps
Brazil 49.069 67 laps
Switzerland 49.095 35 laps
France 49.271 41 laps
Portugal 49.393 68 laps
Pakistan 49.506 34 laps

Australia 50.066 52 laps
Mexico 50.265 44 laps
Netherlands 50.377 28 laps
New Zealand 50.610 59 laps
China 55.783 22 laps

And the drivers that took part in the test:

Australia Christian Jones
Brazil Nelson Piquet jnr, Danilo Dirani and Joao Paulo Oliveiria
China Qing Hua Ma and Tingyi Jiang
France Loic Duval, Alexandre Premat and Nicolas Lapierre
Great Britain Robbie Kerr and Alex Lloyd

It's looking good, most of the teams are looking fairly competetive and the only huge gap in times is from China.

And something else i thought was interesting:

Powerboost:
The PowerBoost system adds a whole new dimension to international motorsport and is unique to the A1 Grand Prix Series. By changing the engine's parameters, the system can give the driver an additional 30bhp over a limited time during each race. Taking the A1 Car to its maximum 550bhp, when used at the right time, the PowerBoost will encourage overtaking meaning the race leader could change on a lap-by-lap basis making even more exciting racing.

The PowerBoost function is driver activated via a button mounted on the steering wheel. Each driver will have a limited amount of time over which he can use the extra power. Once this allotted time has passed the system will become disabled - after each race the Zytek engineers will then reset the system on each car ready for the next race.

Each driver will need to use his skill to carefully manage how and when the system is used during the race.
