It's fascinating how people memorize codes that no one in the auto industry even uses or gives a damn about. The only people who use those codes are total posers who wish they wrote for street racing magazines. Totally all time.

Ignorance. I use codes and I ain't no poser. For example with civics all the way to the newest gen. its easy to remember EF EG EK EP etc depending on the gen. Even on here its faster typing EG6 instead of typing out 5th generation Civic Hatchback.

i say it depends on the relevance. when talking about an economy car, then yeah. but "S14 powered E30 M3" means something, thats not poser talk.thats respect and recognition of a car still considered the best M3 by many. some becuase they want to be wannabes. others becasue it was so far ahead of anything remotely comparable. others becasue it simply is; the lightest, the most hardcore, the best M3.

a little underpowered by todays standards, but still, ....

I heard it was the AE92. Also, the full name of it (im pretty sure) is "Sprinter Trueno Apex GT (AE86)" .

*Edit: Also, a86noob, what do you know aobut the AE86 or did u just see it in Initial D or movies off of KaZaA?

Well i seem to know a little more about it other then the movie and thats pretty much what this thread is about ..so i can more ask questions. Do you understand what i wrote or should I email it to you :dunce:

I've been working in the auto industry for about a year. When we use codes - WHICH IS AN UNBELIEVABLY RARE OCCURRENCE - we use the fourth through seventh VIN codes, which describe a lot more that your stupid tuner mag codes ever will. Ignorance? Tell me that when you can drive.

You were the one saying that NO ONE uses those codes except posers. Your wrong. and who says i read import mags? Super Street and Import Tuner are crappy mags anyways. I drive a civic BTW.

   ahhh ur a funny kid.

I work with cars and we almost always use the codes especially in written form. It makes sense and saves a lot of wasted time trying to explain the model by other means. Of course, when it's easier to say something else then we do. Common-sense really.

Does it have a big wing on the back of it and a 8 inch exaust? I thought so.
Poser.

No I'm not. Especially considering that isn't what I said. I stand by what I said and, yes, I label you a total poser, even if you think you're really cool.

The fact that you know the names of the import magazines speaks volumes. I could've guessed you drive a Civic.

I'm not exactly sure in what capacity some of you really 'work with cars', but I'm promising that S13DRIFTSPEC isn't one of you.

hey s13, what flavor was THAT pie? god dammmn.

may i ask why you chose S13DRIFTSPEC as your name when you are a honda boy? and why you try so hard to claim you dont read ricemags... i mean damn, its like you are trying to prove yourself. this only validates M's points, and, in return...furthers your ownage.

im not trying to be imposing or an instigator...just asking questions...thats all.

^^ That was good putang pie say thanks to your girl.

You all make blind judgements. Poser wtf you all jump on the wagon after M5.
Yeah I drive a civic but wtf does that have to do with anything. Its stock nothing whatsoever done to it. except a sub and an amp. 2001 civic sedan BTW. Just because I drive a civic makes me some ricer. Good thinking. 💡 I was about to get a cavalier but i bought the civic because i liked the quality of the civic better. Payed a bit more but hell im happy it was worth my money. What I drive doesn't have anything to do with my name. I do like S13s and my name S13DRIFTSPEC yeah its a nissan so what. I'm not some blind honda loving fanboy.

Why are you associating those codes with tuner mags? They are part of the VIN. We use codes when parts come in for cars we write the codes on the box because its easier write. A lot of the workers at our shop are familiar with the codes specially on hondas. poser?? I label you an ASS callin me a poser. We have different procedures. I'm sure its different at other as well shops.

No, your idiotic name makes you not just a racer but, in fact, an idiot. Well, maybe not an idiot, but you're no intellectual.

If you bought new, you made the biggest mistake of your life.

Some of them are. Many of them aren't.

No, you use the codes because you think it makes you more knowledgable.

I think it would depend on who you talk to. In the business you're in, engine/chassis codes probably don't make much of a difference as you deal with a much broader range of cars. If however you go to a brand specific message board you'll be dealing with people who want to know everything about their cars and one of the first things they might learn is the chassis code. (E36, E46, S14, S13, AE86, whatever) Whether this first started with car magazines is not something I can confirm nor deny, but that's just the way it is now.

When talking to other enthusiasts of the same vehicle, it makes sense to use these codes because it's likely to be something they'll understand and it can make things quicker (RPS13-Tells you the engine, body, and generation in a very shortened manner), but doing it on a board like this is just stupid. It screams "Look it me! I know more about this car then you! See...I even know the chassis and engine codes!"

That's what I think anyway. :)

LOL call me an idiot just because of my name. Is that all you got. You seem like an angry kid. Never judge a book by its cover. Or in this case name... I don't street race btw. It's irresponsible. If I did street race do you think I would have bought a 2001 civic??

If you bought new, you made the biggest mistake of your life.
LOL this is the most idiotic thing i've heard. I did buy it new. Mistake of my life lol. How is it a mistake? Tell that to the thousands of others who bought the car new.

Some of them are. Many of them aren't.
I'll give you that one. With hondas 4th through 7th digits are like that.

No, you use the codes because you think it makes you more knowledgable.
Since when did I say that?

Ethix101 - Totally agree I guess using codes on these boards is useless.

Buying any car new is a mistake. Let someone else buy it new and take the depreciation hit. You buy it second hand when it won't lose as much value.

My car cost £25000 new. I paid £7000 for it 5½ years later.

Unless it's a rarity - but even then you're looking at about 10% the value lost the instant you drive it out of the showroom.

The average car is worth 50% less 3 years after it was first sold. Buying a 1 year old car is sanest - as the biggest chunk of depreciation has gone and the car's only just been run-in for you.

Oh, and:

lol, okay. as i said before, i was only asking questions. thanks for taking the time to answer, but i will give no further comment. :)

forgot to mention that when i go get parts for my car i have to specify which particalar vehicle the parts are from. BMW made at least two generations of 318 and 325, and when i need parts i tell my parts guy i need "an E21 alternator" not a just an alternator.

i could memorise the part numbers like i did for some when i was a mechanic, but seeing as i dont deal with parts on a daily basis that would simply be an extreme case of fanboysim. parts people dont like to have to interrogate you to figure out which model you need a part for.

and when the name of the car is as generic as "corolla" or "civic" stating the chassis code helps to clear things up right away.

The 1984 Toyota Corolla in Europe was the AE85.

First blow: The Fujiwara Tofumobile is a 1985 model. Eat it. (referring to your first reply)
Second: Model code indicates tim level. While I won't go into specifics, the AE85 has a SOHC 1.5 liter making 80 or so HP, and the AE86 has the 4A-GEU making 120 or so hp. There's a lot more than that, like in the suspention dept., but I don't know the details all that well.

Sorry for hawking on you, there are few instances you are wrong. I just have to snipe you when you are :)

A lot of people who purchase new cars because they want it "new" and don't like the fact that someone else drove it first. They won't be able to find a true history of the used car so they'll feel unsecure about the purchase, so if they have the money they're willing to pay a premium to get it new instead. I guest it's just a personal preference thing... ;)

Indeed - that's why I wrote "Truism" afterwards.

For reference, my last car was a 1993.5 model, but built in Febraury 1994. My current car is 1997 model but was built in January 1998. A "model year" is not always the sole year the car was built OR marketed.

However, the 1984 Toyota Corolla in Europe was an AE85.

AE85 is to AE86 what (assuming it's 1998 again) Impreza 2.5RS is to 22B STi. You could get an AE85 in 1986 new if you wanted to.

Even simpler translation: It's trim level, that's all. OK? :)

Indeed - hence the "in Europe" qualifier. You should further note that the Impreza 2.5RS never reached European shores in any form.

Not sure about europe but the Toyota Corolla SR5, in North America, is the AE86. I think the AE88 is the GTS thats what it says in the VIN if I'm not mistaken.

I find that an odd statement, as the last time I was at the service dept. at the local Nissan dealer, my car was repeatedly referred to as S14, both on parts, on the computer systems, and on literature regarding the cars serviced.
