Anyone else made this annoying mistake?...

I bought a the 1954 300sl, just randomly selected a colour (hellblau), didn't matter as I was going to chrome it....

Anyway I chrome it and notice the wheels are still the horrendous blue, you can't paint them...ok, I'll stick different rims on....you can't....

AARRRGGH. It looks terrible! What a waste, chrome on hellblau does NOT go.

Be careful what base colour you choose if you ever want to paint this thing. Which other premiums can't you change the rims on?

You can't change the F430's wheels.

Paint the SL whatever color you want the wheels to be and paint it chrome again.

I did exactly the same hateful mistake. I had to sell the failed subject, and then buy a black Gullwing to use a Chrome chip again.

Everything because PD is mediocre and lazy enough not to get a stupidly simple preview option :grumpy:.

The Lotus Elise is that way. The wheels come trimmed in the paint color of choice.
Why would you change the wheels on cars with the mfg's logo on them anyway?

Why wouldn't you?

I don't want to see a logo everywhere possible on a car. The logos being on the hood and trunk is enough for me. Nothing looks better than a set of Volk TE37s.

That'll teach you to tastelessly chrome the 300SL.

Agreed.

Why anyone would paint a clssic like the 300 SL, chrome I'll never know. :yuck:

Yeah...I wonder why...:rolleyes::rolleyes:. Tell me a colour that resembles bare metal (in the game) better than Chrome?

Silver != chrome

I know, but as I told you it's as close as it gets to a racing car that has got it's paint peeled away to the bare shiny metal in order to shed weight 👍.

CarBastard, I'll take the Uhlenhaut. Thanks for asking. :sly:

I quite like the SL in Gold Chrome, but I've yet to get a Chrome chip, so I've not given it much thought overall. Interesting about the wheels, though - PD, just let us paint the damned stock wheels. Stuff the manufacturers... :p

it's not intended to look chrome, it's intended to look like the polished aluminum that mercedes-benz has used since the 1930s gran prix era. tasteless would be putting massive chrome rims on the car.

You know I do like the Silver/Bare metal look, But personally chrome paint on cars never seems to look right to me.

I'm pretty sure repainting the car in a random color does not change the color of the rims. I got one in blue, and later decided I liked red better, so I repainted it. But the rims were still blue, so I reused the paint chip it came with. But, the interior had changed to red and stayed that way. I thought it looked terrible, so I just sold it and bought the red one. lesson learned.

None of those are chrome, what's your point again?

They don't call mercedes the chrome arrow... it's the silver arrow.

Try again next time.

He said what colour (besides chrome) best resembles the bare metal finish! Read the friggin' post!!

So basically silver? No one actually go and polish race cars to a shiny finish.

Silver != chrome

I'd totally chrome a SLR (like the one you posted), maybe SLS as well, but not the classic SL.

I did simply because I love getting it sideways online, its a bog standard SLS but the amount of X1's ive been offered as a trade in servers makes me think it doesn't look too bad :-D

Goes to show how dirt cheap X1's are nowa these days.

On Topic:
I'm guilty of painting the car without knowing I can't paint the wheels. Wasted a Matte Black on it...

Language, Timothy!

What colour best represents the bare metal finish represented in the photos?

Metallic silver... but not chrome, I'm afraid.

The whole point of the bare metal paint was that the original paint was removed when a championship car failed scrutineering by a couple of kilos. The team won and never went back to painted bodies.

However... they certainly never added several kilos of chroming lacquer.

Don't get me wrong, those cars would look good in chrome, just don't be fooled into thinking that they'd look like plain metal.

What you guys are looking for is a Matte Silver/ Matte Metallic Silver Chip.

Both are pretty close to the old 'Silver Arrow' surface appearance.

Chrome is nice, but miles off.
