On my travels to the wonderful world of craigslist I seem to have stumbled upon (as the title suggests) a 1987 Mercedes 190e Cossie. Sadly, I can't really justify owning such a car as my first despite how awesome it would be. If the car is as rare as I think it is, perhaps someone could pass along my find to a more deserving individual. As a side note, isn't $8500 a little cheap for a car that went blow-for-blow with the seemingly untouchable E30 M3?

Here's the link: http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/4424513840.html

$8500 is a little cheap. But then again, the car has 115,000 miles on the clock. Despite the description, it could very well be a nightmare, and if that's the case $8500 is too much.

Edit, and considering he says there's "only MINOR sun fade" when you can clearly see almost 50% of the car is faded out you can be pretty sure sun fade is the least of this car's problems. I wouldn't consider buying it for anything more than $3,000 honestly. It already needs a full paint job, and there's $5,000 - $7,000 for a good one alone.

It did, but the 190 isn't the one of the two that people really want.
Very true. That's sort of why I think it's such a cool car, it has that understated appeal that most would overlook.

Also a very good point, and probably the reason we don't see very many here in the Midwest.

Also keep in mind that E30 prices have skyrocketed in the past decade or so (as more and more of the of the pristine ones are snatched up); so the price difference between the two is further aggravated.

I am no expert concerning general prices of used cars in the US, but given the visual unappealing condition of this particular W201 (badly faded paint, worn interior) I don't think 8500 dollar is that cheap.

Don't forget that this isn't an Evolution; it's 'just' a Cosworth. Which is still a very nice and sportive version, but certainly not as rare (and therefor worth less).

Should you buy? Well, the W201 is known as a very well-built model series (which doesn't mean they're indestructible. Watch out for rust, especially on the edges of the doors and wheelarches!). However, unlike the simple 1.8 and 2.0 engines, the 2.3 Cosworth engine is a delicate piece of engineering, and some Cosworth-specific parts can be pretty expensive (which does not only apply to the engine, but to the gearbox and suspension as well) . Because of this, many Cosworths were somewhat neglected when they got older, turning them in a money pit for the unfortunate buyer.

Yeah it could be an investement, but at that price ? EvoII over here go for 80000+

First I thought you were nuts.

Then I googled it.

JEBUS CHRIBUS! Those things have skyrocketed in value.

Yeah. I didn't believed it myself when I first saw the price. Should have bought one when they were 20000€

These are so beat on here, 8k is pretty crack pipe unless it's really nice. The Cossie cars we got in the US arent even that fast anyway. I'd just try and find a 2.6 with a stick. You can make it look just as good with way less issues/cost.

You should look on 190E or Mercedes Benz related forums to get an idea of what the market on these cars are like considering the varying conditions, only then can you really say whether this is a good deal or not.
