I used to use the sticks for GT whenever I didn't use a wheel, but changed to using the buttons when I discovered 'left foot braking'. Considering the mechanics of my thumb, I prefer braking with the [] and accelerating with the X ... easier to control and combine than vice versa, in my opinion. I have the gears on the rear as usual.
On the Xbox I have a slightly different setup, sticking actually to PGR2's default setup - the rear buttons are really deep and so I prefer using those for braking and accellerating. The only problem is that it is a bit more of a strain on the wrist, though I think I can get used to it. With GT3 and PGR2 I use the 'd-pad' (which is still analog on the PS2, but GT3 handles it very differently from the analog stick). With Toca 2 however I need the analog stick for steering.
Of course I mostly just sit behind that lovely DF Pro wheel.
One thing - very few people complain about not being able to control the reverse gear with the pedals. It bothers me though! I hope they fix this, although I haven't seen or read anything that suggests they will.
Oh and to answer the question - since most of the time the X button is pressed 100%, I'd prefer that to be light. But on a decent PS2 controller, that's pretty easily done anyway. Still if you could adjust the level of pressure needed, that would be very nice.
