Well as you know, ads have been annoying us everywhere. From TV commercial, radio commercial, newspaper ads, fliers and also on the internet. There are ads that are ok and some that are just stupid. But how do they earn money from them (especially on the internet) Even GTPlanet has ads! I know they pay to get their products promoted (or something like that) but is it worth it to advertise? I mean out of all the ads out there, only a few would buy their products right?

Well on the internet, everything does seems to be free. Is there a catch behind it? Like if you click on one of the ads and got directed to their website, would they get money? If they do, then how? It would be interesting to know how they do it. Its even more interesting if Jordan can answer this. Like how do GTPlanet get revenues? Other than paying for GTPremium and putting ads on the website, is there any other source of income to get this website running?

It's just like radio or TV, which are free over the broadcast airwaves. Advertisers pay stations to place their ads on the air. Advertisers on the 'net pay sites to host their ads.

Internet ads usually work on a pay-per-click basis. As soon as you click on an ad, a few things happen. The advertiser (ie the company showing off their product/website) pays the advertising company (people like Google adsense and tribalfusion) a certain amount for receiving the hit to their website. Most of this money stays with the advertising company, but a fraction goes to the publisher (the website where the ads are displayed).

How much money is made and paid depends on the publisher's website, generally. The more traffic and unique hits they get per month, the more expensive advertising space is going to be, as a general rule. Advertisers sometimes have to pay for pageviews, too, so they can find themselves paying regardless of the number of clicks. It's far less pricy, however.

Usually, publishers only make a fraction of what the advertisers are paying. The rest goes to the advertising companies, who are essentially middle men.

Just to put this into context, say you click one of the smiley ads on this site (if they still have them). The smiley website will pay tribalfusion (or whoever), say $0.50 for that. Jordan would recieve a fraction of that to go towards server costs, maybe $0.07. That's not accurate, of course, but you get what I mean.

Like I said, though, it all varies from company to company and site to site, and I really don't know exactly how much Jordan makes.

And to answer to question of whether adverts are worth it. Well for the company thats advertising, provided the advert sticks in your mind, it's well worth it.

Adverts sell products, it's as simple as that. A good advert can turn mediocre sales into a big sales hit.

So hypothetically, if all of us were to just click on ads all day, then Jordan would get a lot of cash and Tribalfusion will get filthy rich and the smiley website will go bankrupt? (Assuming the advertising doesn't attract our business.)

Oh well. I had always thought Jordan looked for ads directly from the companies to put up here.

Awesome!:D
SO can I get GTpremium just for clicking on ads on this site all day long? :sly:

In theory, yes. However, there are measures in force to try and prevent that happening.

Interesting but useless information...

I used to be on the Championship Manager forums, and a while back the board admin told us about how much a 30 second ad was during the Champions League Final (I think it was 05) and he said it was around £150,000 for 30 seconds iirc. It's a money earner.
