it would be nice if R5turbo and moloch horrid had read vixen's original post which had stated that the post count was important on his seperate forum - not here at GTplanet
There does not appear to be anything special on the referenced forum that would indicate that post count there means anything different to what it means anywhere else.

I have seen many posts (again thankfully not here) that indicate that the poster thinks post count is an important indicator of skill/whatever - these are generally the worst spammers of all and have driven me away from forums in the past. I am hoping that this will not happen here; repeated questions, pointless posts and threads, nitpicking, and one of my favorites, asking for opinions without offering one up to start the discussion etc. are just too much to have to wade through to get to the good stuff.

The next generation of foums would be great if they had an ignore/hide user option.

Ah, but that already exists. Click on a person's username; when you're brought to their profile, there'll be a black bar, and a white link in the middle that says "Add {so and so} to Your Ignore List".
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you

I think that the meaning that is given to the post count depends on who we're talking about and not what forum. As Moloch_horridus pointed out the post count "should" be related to skill and experience, the fact that he said "should" tells that he also noticed that it is not always the case.

After reading ViXeN's original post again, I see nothing wrong in what we said. She's talking about another forum that is also about some game, just like this one. And I still see no reasons why post count could be related to skills and/or experience no matter what game you are talking about. She pointed out that people spamming here could be doing it to feel like they were moderators, so I guess it could be a matter of "moderator-ness" rather than skill and experience on this forum :) .

I mean, how many moderators do we have here? Are they all under cover? Because the people I see replying with these corrective remarks do not have Moderator under their names!!!

sorry for the confusion lads, i guess from your original posts it wasn't obvious that you had diferentiated between the fact that vixen was talking about the seperate forum where post count did have some percieved importance as opposed to here where it means nothing. The point vixen was making was that post counting does indeed hold significance at certain forums - though not this one.

To answer your original question, Vixen, both posters are equally wrong. The new user should take more time and responsibility before posting a new thread, and the more experienced user should know better than to dumb down the community. Recently, however, I've become increasingly involved in other forums dealing with home theater equipment. I've had to ask a lot of stupid questions, and I've had to navigate and post in threads and forums that were not initially clear to me. The result is a new understanding of what it's like to be a "newbie" - keep in mind I've been heavily involved in online communities for more than 5 years now - and I was scolded for asking a question in the wrong forum. There were some rather biting remarks, and some that made me feel stupid. How was I supposed to know that the "Audio Technology & Theory" forum (for "discussing different cables and transmission types") wasn't a good place to ask if a cable would work?

Basically, everybody was in the wrong. The administrator should have made the forum description more clear, I should have done more to make sure I was posting in the right forum, and the senior members should not have been rude to me. I can really only fix one of these problems here...the other two are up to you guys. 👍

I experienced exactly same thing in the Oasis(band) forum. Compared to gtplanet, it was extremely hard to navigate and search. I think I asked if Oasis was coming to Portland or Seattle during the U.S. Tour, in the "U.S. Tour" thread. I got the "newb" treatment, and was told to go to some thread called "Seattle Show?" or something like that. It was so frustrating. :grumpy:

The problem with this is, especially with progressive topics, you lose grasp on whats going on. :( If the person you ignored made a valid statement then youll be behind in whats going on.

Another forum, in which ill keep unnamed ( in fear ill get warnings from mods and admins.) that use a system of praising people for good posts, and deducting points for bad posts... People who deduct large amounts of points (over a certain amount) have to give dam good reasons otherwise they can be in trouble too. The more respect points you gain the more people seem to aknowledge what you have to say ( and the more points your allowed to give and subtract). This works quite well in this certain forum, but i imagine that staff would have to saught through reasons for deducting excessive points..Which would boost strain. Hmm...

Although this does work well... There are problems...

don't normally bother with this, but i just couldn't resist given the thread... - but that is up there on the best, most relevant stupid comment ever. i love it!

I wonder if another member would have posted what he had, if that member would have gotten a verbal warning for spamming?

GT Planet, gotta love it.

Probably not.

The admin have a sense of humour. Which is probably the only reason I'm still here...

I see other members who make almost exactly the same posts, but they get warned for spam.

Famine, you can't tell me that there is not a favortism among some moderators and admins for certain members.

I do think you are one of these members, but I see why you would be favored and you deserve it all. I'm not trying to hate on you indigo man.

What I meant by post counts showing skill is this... When noob comes to the forum and gets advice from a premium member, he prolly will feel like it's good advise... Believe it or not, people see there status on the forum as just that, their STATUS... lol, So a lot of posters will spam to increase their "Status"... That's what I meant. So perhaps skill was the wrong word to use, should have been status.

And Jordan, I know how you feel, My status on the forum I mod is Overlord (Moderator) I have close on 1500 posts there and 99% of them are contructive... I have spammed once or twice, but try not to make a habit of it.. I sometimes spam on purpose to redirect a topic... When people spam, other posters generaly spam them back... But if your spam is contructive, you can actually get the topic back on track... lol...

And to add to futuredrifter's question, on the forum I moderate, I got to be a mod in two ways...

1. I always posted contructively and helped noobs and senior members alike when ever I could.
2. I slept with the site admin (err, oops) <--- Just joking here... Seriously, 2. I applied to be one when I thought I was ready... At that forum we have a hot list, you can apply and if you're successful you get on the hot list, then if a mod is needed they call on you. I posted there for a year and abit before I was made Mod...

Lastly, let me tell you that modding is not the glorious power happy job people think it is, it's hard work and time consuming... You have to sift through every post, even if it's in forums you don't like... you still have to do it!!!

Possibly - but in most cases, even though I skirt a very fine line indeed, because the moderators know I'm not a complete and total buttmunch, I get "benefit of the doubt" - a newbie without that "rapport" may fall foul. Though after this paragraph, my "benefit of the doubt" is going out of the window. Bugger.

However, the comment I made in this thread would escape any censure if it was from any member. It was clearly in jest and irony. Even SandStorm could have made it.

i'm probally on this site, well um all the time mabe around 12 hours a day. and well i want to become a moderator, or somthen even though i'm till technically a new member with a high post count, but i could care less ab0out stupid things like look i have 10,00 posts. so i mainly join forums to HELP not have lots of post. the one thing that keeps me comen back is because of the people, espcially Famine to get a laugh. ok i need to shut up now, its 4 in the morning and i can't think straight. but how can i get moderator. and if it costs money how much? i'm kinda on a budget.

I just thought it was a good example of how some people may be able to slide by easier than others. I'm glad you somewhat see it the way I do.

SandStorm rules.

Edit - Famine, is Yoda maybe the buttmunch you speak of? He seems like a winner to me.

To some extent, you are correct, though probably not the extent you think.

The staff make judgement calls. It's our job; it's why Jordan hired us. Members with a strong signal-to-noise ratio get more official tolerance than ones who don't. Think of it as a cop who lets you off for 10 over the limit because he sees you have a good record and your car is in safe condition.

But people with good records who get tolerance realize that there are lines they shouldn't cross, and the prevent themselves from crossing that line.

If there was rigid enforcement of the rules that would engender even more complaints. And if you take the time to buid up your stake in GTPlanet as much as some of the supposed "favorite" members do, you deserve some tolerance.

is constructive spam like.. "use the search function.. for the billionth time"
Does it get the topic back on track? No, why? because the topic obviously was never on track right? So no, not contructive spam...

Contstructive spam (oxymoron as it is) is more like say someone starts a thread on Japanese drift cars and it goes off topic... I come on and post something like "has anyone ever seen a pink RX7 FD before?" People then start talking about the RX7 not being pink and vuola, back on the topic of Japanese Drift cars...

Get my drift? (No pun intended)

Wow, I think this is the fourth time this has been asked in the last 2 days.

Moderator positions are by INVITE only. Don't ask to be a mod, they(administrators) will ask you.

But I like the idea of throwing some money at us...I'd say 10$ to each SuperMod and admin would grease the wheels a bit... :sly:

Man...Duke always trying to one up us mods! :D

As for moderators, I select each person individually. I'll talk the decision over with the other moderators and Duke, but I'm the one that makes the decision.

Also, about "favoritism". I really think that's a rather cheap shot at attempting to degrade and belittle our staff here. The reason some user's comments "slide", is because they are both appropriate, deliberate, and usually funny. Famine's posts in this thread, for example. Had they been by a "New User" and made in the exact same context, I seriously doubt anyone would be offended or upset. We've booted a lot of "favorites" who crossed the line, but nobody seems to be bringing that up.

Speaking of bribes, I slipped the J-man $40... It worked after a fashion - I can now lock threads. As long as I started them. Hm.

And he's right. Many more popular members have been given the boot for just crossing the line that little too much (or often). Darin springs to mind. SandStorm less so, since he was never really popular... :D

Jordan, I wasn't trying to take a cheap shot at the staff at all. I undersand that sometimes it slides for even newbies. It's just sometimes, it does happen. Famine can make a post like that, but I'm sur another user has done the same, and gotten flamed. I've seen it happen. I'm not saying for a second favortism among members is a bad thing, I think it's something members should stride for.

Heck, I wouldn't cheap shot the team for anything. Everyone knows I've gotten my fair share of chances here, and I greatly appreciate it.

Good job. By saying that, you'll never get your wishes of being a moderator. :dunce:
