If I get bored enough during the summer, I might just try that! Cool idea! (albeit, a bit cruel; and feeding the flies would be a bit of an issue! )

I've done that as a kid, though I actually used scraps of typing paper for the wings and tail, and used a single fly as an engine, since the plane was so much lighter. After a while, they find out they can stop flapping and glide (or they just get exhausted).

It works. The tough part is catching the "engines" and adhering them to the wings, but once that is done you're set. Slap really loud behind the plane and watch it fly.

I wonder what would happen if you lit the matchstick on fire? Would they fly faster?

Make a plane like that but bigger and like 5ft. Then catch a crap load of flies, and set that giant aircraft go.
