Wait... Mitsubishi is still around?

edit: Pointless thread necro batman. I realize you probably found this thread via google, but please check the last post date....

Wait... Mitsubishi is still around?

If I was reading things correctly on the 2011 Sales Wrap-Up, Mitsubishi sales increased 40% this past year. I'm at a loss of words as to why. I suppose the Outlander Sport is supposed to be a decent crossover, and the Lancer is still the Lancer. But, beyond that, I can't think of another vehicle in their stable that is on sale... Let alone being worth buying.

The fact that they're getting by on less than 80,000 units a year has to be worrying as well. We'll see what the 2012 'i' adds to the mix, and if we get anything else new otherwise.

I have a feeling there's a bit of profit sharing going on between different arms of Mitsubishi. Every big screen television sale is worth two whole cars.

Wait... Mitsubishi is still around?

Probably not for long. They are putting a lot of their eggs in the basket that is the i, because they are hoping it will reinvent the entire brand image by itself but have no backup plan in case it doesn't (which, to be frank, I don't think it will).

Mitsubishi is floundering in America, but it's not doing too terribly overall. You also have to consider Mitsubishi Fuso sales.

Mitsubishi's light truck segment (Strada/Triton and variants) sells well outside the US, and the Outlander and Outlander Sport are good products.

Like Suzuki, Mitsubishi's problems in the US are not reflective of overall profitability... but unlike Suzuki, Mitsubishi doesn't have a substantial market presence in India or the motorcycle segment to give it a huge sales volume and profitability.

Someone backed into my friend's Jetta. So while they are repairing it, the rental people gave him a 2011 Galant. My god it's a terrible car. Today, he took it back to the rental place and practically begged them to put him in something else. Luckily they had an Altima that was just returned. Much better.:)

The 2006 Generation killed it. No more AWD, no more high-powered rally car...it tried to be a sports car, and it failed at doing that. It would've been nice to see the return of the Eclipse GT-FOUR with Turbo charged engine and AWD. Oh well.

Yeah, I think most people wrote off Eclipse awwwwwwwwwhile back.
The Eclipse and its variants are made in America.

It's as Japanese as the banjo.
Yup. They were left-hand drive import in Japan.

And people forget, but the earlier Eclipse was a Dodgebishi or Mitsurysler(Diamond Motors, I think :p ). I admit, they were pretty cool cars for the first couple of generations. After that, they were neat looking cars, but that was about it!

The 2006 2000 Generation killed it. No more AWD, no more high-powered rally car...it tried to be a sports car, and it failed at doing that. It would've been nice to see the return of the Eclipse GT-FOUR with Turbo charged engine and AWD. Oh well.

Fixed.

The 2006 Generation killed it.

Turning it into a startling recreation of a 1970's American car just hastened its fall.

The 2000 redesign, as decent as it was as a car, alienated basically everyone who had liked it in order to move it into a market that was already in the process of collapsing on itself at the time.

When your main competition was the Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, a car based on a chassis that was already 20 years old, and you still weren't able to beat it... You're bound to fail.

I don't mind the styling of the 06+ cars, but I think they would have been a bit better if Mitsu was smart and put the Evo X drivetrain into them instead of a V6.

...just like the AWD Eclipse Ralliart concept (Evo drivetrain)

If they'd produced an Eclipse Evo with that body shell, it would have been heavier and slower than the Lancer, and it would still be saddled with that crappy small back seat and tight cabin.

There's no getting around the problem that the Eclipse is built on the Galant platform, which is large and heavy compared to the Lancer's narrower and lighter chassis.

What's wrong with the crappy back seat? (There's a name for them, and I forget what it is.) It's just there so the car can be written off as a "family car" instead of a sports car...which is what it really is.

Will anyone outside the US actually give a rats arse? The eclipse was just a wrong-wheel drive jellybean-shaped conveyance for hair stylists , it's time had long since passed. PS what the hell is a Mitsubishi Endeavor?

As long as the Evo is around, there's no point in an Eclipse. The Eclipse was always the car you settled for when you couldn't get an Evo.

The jellybean weighs within EVO X territory without the all-wheel drive hardware. With the all-wheel drive hardware, the extra differentials and etcetera, it's bound to weigh more.

The rear seats are awful. I understand that they're only there because... but they're awful.

Aside from that, the cabin is still cramped compared to the Evo X, with that stupidly large center console and intrusive dashboard and low-slung ceiling. Competitors like the Genesis Coupe are a paragon of useability in comparison. Hell, the old Hyundai Coupe had better seating space, and that was a smaller car!

If ever an Eclipse EVO ends up being lighter than a regular EVO X, it still won't be as spacious... and an EVO X RS variant built with the same level of weight savings would still be lighter... and would perform better.

Gee, we can't tell you hate the car.

To each their own. I quite like it. If I ever get the funds to build such a project, you can bet I wouldn't hesitate.

They should bring back 3000GT as a competitor to GT-R, like it was back in the day.
