Last time I played multiplayer in a rts game I got ownt.......badly. It was WC3 at a lan party I use to go to.

Have you tried any of the downloadable maps and scenarios?

There are some really cool ones out there. I just finished a scenario entitled, D-Day.
It's pretty awesome. You start off with about 100 ships and about 3600 troops. Yes, that's three thousand six hundred, and you're going up against just as many defenders.

You gotta load all your troops onto the ships and prepare for your beach landing.
The beach is HEAVILY defended with organ guns atop of clifs and thousands of musketeers and longbowmen. Some serious strategy is needed.

Once you get a beach head established you then have to move inland and destroy the mortar positions and finally push on to a village that is heavily defended with cannon.

Downloads are available at www.aoe3.heavengames.com

What???? There are downloadable maps??? :dopey:
That D-Day mode sounds awesome! I am going to have to try those out for sure.
I tried making maps but didnt have any luck getting them to load.

Hey CB, what maps and scenarios have you downloaded, and did you like/hate them?
We downloaded a map called "Map Unknown" and that was very good. I would give that a 4.5 out of 5.0.
We also downloaded some huge map called "Prairie" that was just way way too big and the resources were spaced too far apart. I would give that a 3.0 out of 5.0.
I checked out that scenero you mentioned called "D-day" and it was insane! Just like you said it was insane. My team had over 3,600 guys and 100ships!!! I have no idea how many enemies there were. I didn't have a chance to play all the way but I played for about 10 minutes and it looked like it would be a lot of fun. It actually caused my PC to lag a little in 1280 x 1024 on the highest settings. For a battle that huge I could sacrafice some of the graphics I guess. Actually it ran pretty good after the entire map of guys loaded. Still a little slower than I was comfortable with.
I have tried to make my own map a few times but for some reason the PC doesnt recognize them. I might have to do some research on how to load my maps. Thanks again for the update on this already fantastic game. Now its even better knowing there are maps and scenereos to DL. 👍

If you like the D-Day type scenario check out:

  • Operation Overloard II (Omaha)
  • Operation Torch
  • Push to Berlin

It is a little series. These run much better and have much more "eye candy" on the map as well as fortified locations. It's really good.

Some others that I've found interesting are Gettysburg, City Assault and Siege of Fort Niagra.

Some good RMS are River Crossings II, Appalachains and Total War III.

Check'em out. They're a lot of fun.

I jsut ordered this game today, so it should be with me by Weds, sounds like a great game.

Hey CFM I've added you to my friends list. I'll keep my eye out for you.

Long time no Chat Boomer...I'll add you to my list on the AOE III Server. I haven't played for about 3 months, so I'll suck real bad at first if you wanna match.👍 If anyone else wants to get on my buddies list just say so.:)

Your going to have a lot of fun if you like strategy based games. Obviously you probably read through most of this thread so you see our enthusiasm with AOE3. Heather and I play this game at least a couple times every single week. We always play together against the AI online. If you viewed the screen shots I posted then you get a real good feel of how the game is.
Now boombexus told us about all the maps you can DL so that has made the game even more fun. I never played the single player. Heather beat it and told me its a lot more fun online but she said the single player is still fun. There is also a mode where you can just play against the computer. Not the campaign mode. You pick a map, how many AI you want to go against, then you just start playing.
Let us know your feedback of the game and if you have any questions. 👍
PS if you go online against other people you will probably get owned and it wont be enjoyable. Try to find a friend to play with online and you both get on the same team and go against the AI. Thats the most fun.
The last round I played with heather I had over 23 rockets. It was so awesome!! We destroyed the AI!

How big are the maps, becuase I've got Rise of nations which I thought was very good but sometimes a bit too quick to advance through. That had some big maps but in terms of armys and units you could have it was not on the same scale as this game.

I also have rise of nations but didnt play it much because Age of Empires is way way better IMO.
The settings the game provides in AOE3 will allow you to pick up to 200 guys. That includes cannons, rockets, soldiers, villagers, and ships.
You can choose from small, medium, and large maps. Some of the games heather and I have played lasted for 2 hours straight. 1 hour is usually minimum. Heather and I play against 3 computer AI usually on medium difficulty. Thats 5 total players in the room.
That site that boombexus listed has some MASSIVE maps. I mean they are 4x the size of the largest maps. It takes several minutes for your explorer to even get across the map. I personally think they are too big unless you have over 6-8 people.
There are many options to choose from so you have the custom games you want. There are even levels with water so you can get the huge ship battles. Those are the most fun to me.
I would not suggest downloading any of the maps from that site until you get a really good feel for this game. Start with a small map and play 1 on 1 with the AI on the easiest setting. That will allow you to learn what your people do. Also the Campaign will teach you a lot too. Heather taught me almost everything I know since she beat the game and she has played almost every day since the game came out. If I played against Heather she would destroy me.

Is there any downloads that unlock the maximum number of units you can create anywhere?

Since you are going to be a beginner in this game, 200 will be more than enough. Just wait until you see how brutal some of the battles are.

200 is enough for a good game, but what I mean is, is it only on certain addon maps that you get more units, or is there something out there that lets you unlock it for everything? BTW it arrived today, I'll be installing it soon and I'll let you guys know what I think later on.

The link that I posted above is to a modpack that should let you have as many settlers and military units as you desire in Skirmish mode.
However, some custom scenarios will have a predetermined amount of units that are at your disposal. That is where you can have up to thousands of troops.
Otherwise, your standard maps and most other DL'able random maps will have the typical 200 population limit.

Have fun with your new game and let us know when you're ready to do some online battles. ;)

Maybe we can get a GTP clan started. What do you guys think?

I'm totally down for that, as I have no friends on AOE III right now. Playing random people gets frustrating sometimes because some of the people are just too damn good or completly terrible. What's an average joe to do?:)

Thanks, and I will do.

The games a good'un, it's seems a lot harder than Rise of Nations which is the one I was playing previously, and thats no bad thingin my book. A GTP Clan would be cool but some of you might have to put up with the catching up I've got to do to get good at this game.

Ah, don't worry about the catching up part. If we get a clan started I was thinking that we could mostly play together until we get a better feel for online play.

Plus, the forums at www.agecommunity.com and www.aoe3.heavengames.com have some good tips on strategy with the various different civs as well as areas where you can download recorded games so you can actually see these strategys in action.

Check them out as it will definately speed up your learning curve. :)

I'll be sure to check them out when I get home 👍.

I've started to get the hang of this a bit. I'm going to have a go on some custom maps soon I think.

What do you think of the game so far? Have you played online with a friend yet on the same team? Thats the most fun IMO.
Now that Heather and I both have a 360 we probably wont be on AOE3 for a while.

So anyone ready for some friendly online play?

No pressure though. We could all play together on the same team if we wanted against some AI opponents or whatever you wish.

It could be a good time and a chance for us to share some strategy.

If we're all up for it, let's get a time and date that is convenient for us all.

Yeah I'm up for it, definitely. I'm just conscious that ~I think I'm 7 hours ahead of Colorado which might limit it, but if you could get a game in early afternoon say before 4pm, I could probably join it.

I'm ready for some AOE III, but the only days off I have this week are Wed and Thurs, and I have a softball game Thurs. I was thinking of starting a new profile or home city anyway so if you guys are at the lower level home cities that could work out nicely. 3 vs 3 matches are probably the most fun IMO, but I'm down for anything, really. I can be available anytime Wed afternoon until about 6 AM Thurs, or anytime Thurs after about 9 PM until 6 or 7 AM Fri. Just PM me here at GTP or send me a clan invite if you guys get one going.

I wish I could play with ya guys but I'm using a copy I rented from the local library. I doubt I'd be able to go online with it. A little too broke to buy the game atm.

I am, I'm getting my bearings a lot more now, starting to beat skirmishes against harder opponents and such.

I havent played skirmishes too much. I've been playing campaign and still stuck on a mission where I have to defend pyramids. :grumpy:
