Well not severely...but still hurt like a...yeah.

Why is it that sometimes when i wake up in the middle of the night (to go to the bathroom) i move my leg (this is while i am in my bed) from straight to 90* bent) and all of a sudden the muscle in my leg just does like this one second spasm and sends a very painful shock that is not pleasant...and when i wake up i can still feel the muscle a little tensed up from when that happened...

Can someone explain why this happens to me?! :guilty: (I'm sure it's normal, but still hurts like no other)

Could be a trapped nerve.

My dad has Sciatica which is basically a trapped nerve that causes pain in the leg. They told him for 6 months that he had a torn hamstring...

One reason is that you drink too little. This sounds funny but really, the muscles can be a bit dehydrated and that causes cramps. :)

Greycap is correct. It's called a charlie horse, for some reason. I used to get them mostly in my calf muscles - like getting caught in a bear trap.

Usually it's caused by dehydration, but it can also be caused by calcium or potassium defficiency as well. So drink a glass of milk and eat a banana, too.

Banana's seem to heal everything. Back in highschool, my teacher was giving a lecture, and out of no where, he went blind. He literally stopped his speach, and started screaming that he was blind. One of the teachers came down from the office and fed him a banana, and within half an hour to an hour, he was able to see again. The greatest part of it all though was that we went home with no history homework that day. Hooray!

Charley Horse:

Wikipedia
It often occurs in sports when an athlete is struck by an opponent's knee, in a manner not unlike the kick of a horse, perhaps the reason for its name.

In recent decades the term has also been used to describe painful leg cramps, which may occur in the thigh or the arch of the foot, but most often affect the calf muscle.

The term may date back to American baseball slang of the 1880s, possibly from the pitcher Charley "Old Hoss" Radbourne who is said to have suffered from cramps. Another story mentions a horse named Charley that used to work at Comiskey Park, the Chicago White Sox' ballpark in Chicago.

I had both Caves tighten up in the middle of the night while I slept... I think that was the fastest I ever jumped out of bed awake. :grumpy:

I used to get that alot last year, do quite simply what Duke says. He nailed it. 👍

Yeah, a few years ago I used to get a charlie horse about once a week. I take calcium supplements now, which have stopped them.

This is all the info you need.

I've had them on and off freqently for the last few years, and it certainly isn't pleasent.
Usually after periods off school where I do sod all..

That's what I gets sometimes but put it down to doing karate barefoot on hard flooring.

I've never heard of it before this, but I did know that you should eat a banana if you have like a twitching feeling in the corner of your eye.

Really? I didn't know this, but I know that feeling and it's very annoying. Have to buy bananas next week! :)

That is the funniest story I have ever read!

I woke up one morning several years ago with a twisted ankle. It wasn't in a bad position when I woke up, but it was obvious that it had spent most of the night twisted around in a weird position. Walking around with a limp, it was somewhat embarrasing to tell people that I had injured myself sleeping. (It was also summer, so the "skiing accident" excuse would not have worked.)

I get charlie horses all the time. Mainly during or after sporting events or when I haven't drunk anything all day. Its also probably nutrition issues as well.

I myself have huge spasms when sleeping, that wakes me up just before it happens. My hole body just jump about 1cm off the bed when that happens, but I have no problem with it. But I agree with the "Charlie Horse" thing. :)

That's to do with lactic acid forming in your muscles from anaerobic respiration (heavy breathing). We just call it cramp over here (UK).

It's to do with not getting enough oxygen, not enough water and sometimes low salt levels. If you get it it's best to drink water, eat something salty (I choose pringles) and apply heat or cold, it's your choice.

I get it alot after rugby.

I used to get charleyhorses inmy toes when I would bend them the wrong way. My big toe would get stuck, I couldn't move it, and the pain would slowly get worse until I'd have to jump up and try to get it back straight before I'd yell. Damn that hurts when that happens. I think just stretching a muscle the wrong way can cause it to cramp up.

I get sort of what MugenVTEC said. I wake up just as my body jerks really fast and randomly. Kinda scary sometimes but I usually fall asleep before I get to far into questioning it.

I get cramps everynow and then, usually after sports and whatnot.

What the hell is this body jerk thing? It sounds kind of dangerous.

The only thing I've done that comes close that was one time when my arm fell asleep. My bed is next to a wall, so I woke up like "Hehe, my arm's numb." So I hit it against the wall really hard. Nothing. So I decided that I would try and raise it about an inch, just to see what would happen; after all, I've always been skeptical of not being able to control your body when it's numb. Well, that night is when I stopped being skeptical, because I punched myself in the face! The thing is, I didn't know I punched myself in the face because I couldn't feel my arm moving. I thought somebody else was in my room and hit me! So I jump out of bed really freaked out, turn on the light, and find nobody in my room. Man, I was ready to swing my dead arm, too! It really did scare me, though.

I say it has more to do with growing pains than diet. Your muscles are beginning to stretch, along with all the tendons and other ligaments in your lower legs. It's normal. Just walk it off. I got them all the time between ages 13 to 18.

Well over here I've only heard of the word cramp used for pains in you sides, otherwise its specified where it is.

I meant that I get a charlie horses ( leg cramps ) a lot. I don't know if its a damaged nerve in one spot ( ham string I think ) because ever since I had the first one its always been prone to come back in the same muscle everytime. And its at the most random moments. Like one time I it got just getting up out of a chair and another time while playing GT4 with a DS2.

In The other spot I'm pretty sure its the lactic acid that causes it because it mainly happens when I play the entire soccer game without being subbed out therefore my only drink ( a small one ) comes at half time.

The one in your side is called a stitch.

I get cramps at pretty random times, my friends dad got one when we were in the pool one day, he just yelled "I've got a cramp!" tried to climb out and almost slipped over, then he just did laps up the road for like half an hour. I laughed the whole time.

I get these sometimes... Either in my foot (That tendon along the bottom inside), or my thighs &/or calves. It hurts soooo much, like the muscle tenses, and then flexes really hard for too long. I get the eye twitch once in a while, too. Oh well.

Nah. It just feels like you've fallen about a foot, even though you haven't really moved. Your whole body just kind of flinches.

Don't buy bananas. If you drop them, they could kill you.

But, yeah, you're just getting a cramp. Here's one to try. Keep your leg straight and then contract your calf muscle as tight as possible. Then, while keeping the calf contracted, also fully contract your hamstring while brining your foot towards the butt. You'll get a killer cramp in the process... Instant hyperflexion; the degree of which can teach you how much more water and stretching you need.
