AI - Artificial intelligence - But why isn't it?

The problem with racing ai is that they have about three main racing lines. The racing line, the overtaking line and the pit in/out line. Should you upset their racing line, they will either try to get back to the racing line OR the ai will come off track. Humans will use any of the two options, or they will use a safer racing line. Also, ai will stick to the same driving and cornering rules. The main rule is definetly to stick to the racing line. So, in conclusion, the programmers would and should improve more situations, such as late braking or an alternative racing line.

There is 1 video that has 2 AI cars side by side overtaking the player - they can't be both on the overtaking line ;)

Just to reiterate what needs to be said more than once, obviously, I haven't been overwhelmed by any racing game's A.I. Even though you can see bone headed bot behavior in every single game, whether console or PC, for some reason Gran Turismo can never be good enough for some people. Yes, Gran turismo isn't perfect. What is?

You know, I've been slammed off the road in GTR, and watched the bots grind through Monza's chicanes like six year olds were at the wheel, and no one seems to mind. And this holds true for every single game. For some reason I feel I have to state this twice because either some people's vision gets blurry or they get amnesia when they read something like this.

No Racing games AI so far for me has been "convincing" and how could it be you're asking to simulate intelligence, knowledge and reflexes, not easy.

But there are small ways to program AI to fool us into thinking they are as competitive yet considerate as possible.

Toca 3 is one of the rare places ive seen this, the game itself its bleh, the concept is amazing and the variety too.

But the AI varies from class to class, if you're racing DTM its MUCH MUCH harder than racing buggys on dirt ovals, im talking about the AI set at the same difficulty levels.

One of the hardest parts of the game is beating the AI in the V8 Supercars, theyre tough aggressive, they block, they take every inch of the road they can, but if you crash or are going slow, they dont ram into you, they avoid you at all costs even if it means slowing down to a snails pace (which sometimes happens in Bathurst on top of the hill).

And thats CODEMASTERS, the people who made GRID!

So far in GT5 from what i've seen its 2 sided, ive seen a great video of that Castrol Supra avoid a spining GTR Xanavi with a nice detour move, but ive just seen a HPA Audi TT run right into a spining Zonda R, and not only that KEPT THE FOOT ON THE GAS jsut ramming through like it was raping it or something.

I hope for the best.

I would be happy, if the AI realises that the loud pedal can go right to the floor...

They know it does, they just dont apply it until the moment they make contact with you. IN GT4 at least!

Anyone who has ever tried Mercedes Benz World Racing (or World Racing 2)
knows that it is indeed possible to program a perfect AI for a racing game.

If you dont believe me go download the demo for PC and try it yourself.

Fixed. You just need the video id number in the link

Thanks for that. I just tryed to do what that chap did in the vid on GT4 and not been able to knock them off or get them to spin out like in that vid.

Which raises another question, "In GT5 can the A.I make mistakes aswell?"

Yeah, with the new AI mental and temperament (calm/agitated - and everything inbetween) attributes they will.

M5 over steering on the 2nd corner here. I've also seen a black Enzo in older vids lock up and go off track.

Guy's look at this video made by Fammine.notice the AI off the red 500,very very aggressive and human

AI passing on both sides at 2:06 is impressive :)

Racing with slow cars is definitely more fun

With AI like that no one will trust B-Spec Stig to driver around while they take a toilet break.

Thats has got to be the best AI driving I have seen for ages.
