AI with their own personality?

Would it be nice to race in a tuner cup and you would race against a guy who would go around the track drifting(race drifting, not exibhition(sp))? Or race with someone who's known to block and make his opponent crash. Or someone who is kind of crazy and will try to overtake everyone even if he knows he will likely crash(A.K.A sato :scared: ) . My Idea would be to make race different by including driver with their own personality, you could have some information (before the race) on the drivers saying what to watch from them and try to adjust yourself. I think that would had reality to racing and since everyone is different in RL, why should every opponent drive the same?

Different personalities would be cool, but most differences are subtle on a track. You mentioned drifting, people don't drift GT cars at all, ever. It be down to how willing that person was to try and out brake you and that sort of thing thatwould be more common differences, is he willing to give you a nudge if you try to pass him or as he;s passing you ect.

a bit like forza's but beefed up , how about you could import the Fangio file and a one-on-one round the 'ring . Wait , what would you let the old southerner drive though..

How about making it more story based, with certain drivers being seen in different events?

EG. Joe Bloggs would race you in your first race, where you whoop his behind in Trueno, and you also see him later trading paints at 170 mph in JGTC cars through the Suzuka chicane, because he's risen the ranks just like you.

You go, Joe!

I very much want to see some sort of individual AI, especially in Career Mode. Many of us want that. But realistic ones, not Need For Speed Racer ones. :sly:

Story Mode? Hmm... we'll see.

That's like toca 2 or 1, and yes that would be nice to add some 'important' character that you would see getting better and better through the seasons and maybe you could be his teamate in a season and you'd need to help him or he could help you. But I don't want something linear like toca 2 where you need to do certain races to continue. I want to keep the same aspect of the game with personalised AI and not a toca clone.

There are already games with those features and they are known of the features:

Story: Ridge Racer
Personality: Kaido battle
Format: GT

GT's known for it's strict racing, if you change that now, it can be dangerous.

I was thinking about using Case-Based Reasoning in implementing AI.

CBR uses a history of facts to construct new solutions when facing a new set of facts. That would be extremely useful if this history of computer car decisions were saved in memory card.

A solution that does not works as expected is dropped from history (Example: Hitting your car while you are in your line) and a new one is generated (Example: a cpu controlled car tries to delay braking and test it).

This is just a 5 min thought. Obvisously to generate a full explanation demands lots of time.

There are so many tecnologies of AI available. PD should use at least ONE of them.

as good as gt is the ai sucks big time - they need to address this for gt5 because it is only the main part of the game damn. :grumpy:

personnalitys would be an excellent idea 👍

however would it ultametly make the game even easier for us?

later this idea will turn into alliances and grudges, kinda like Nascar CFTC.
^hopefully not
but anyways, great idea! there's the aggresive driver, and there's the nice driver who'll always let u pass...

What i reckon next gen AI will be able to do is watch you when they are not racing. And also learn how you drive while learning how to be a better driver over time aswell mates.

I think the personality thing is cool, but make it subtle, don't necessarily give the guy a name, make it a random function that has different levels. In one race, you might go up against a guy who is banzai nuts and tries to outbrake you everywhere, but that driver isn't necessarily identified. And make the AI sensetive to passing maneuvers like in Enthusia. I love being able to outbreak somebody and not have them turn in on me like I wasn't even there. I don't care about stories or rivalries, I just want the AI to be a little more Artificially intelligent.

agreed

how about that when you just start out the drivers are not very skilled, and as you progress, they get better, so when you are racing lemans they are a lot more skilled than say, the racers you raced in the sunday cup. So it adds some more challenge

Nice ideas, although givin an AI personalities is like giving it skill levels, I would like it if the AI was able to asses situations and choose according solution based on diferent reasons(such as tire condition, car condition, race position, lap count, the difficulty of the situation, is the risk worth it) that sort of thing.

That would be a great compromise. Keeps GT's spirit (doesn't become a toca clone) but adds some realism that would make every race different.

Here are two arguments I'd pose to this issue. The first argument is that this would be a good idea, as you have distinguishable personalities among racers. You really get to know another racer's style. So when you meet him or her, you know what to expect. If PD accepts this idea and decides to beef it up somewhat, maybe characters can evolve over time, allowing angry drivers to learn to cool down in racing situations.

However, there would be a counterarguement to this. The counterargument would be that it's just AI. It doesn't really NEED distinguishable AI racers because you know what to expect. The only personality shown would be that of a racer's skill level as opposed to charisma or talent.

The way I stand on this is that I probably wouldn't want to see this happen, unless maybe in recognizable or significant race series like Japanese GT, DTM, or especially the GT World Championship. I'd even throw in the Polyphony Digital Cup, since it's a significant series, I'd guess you'd say. Add Formula GT and we're straight. It's a "yes and no" deal to me.

John, so your saying we should have recognizeable characters in some series, but not in others? I don't know, I think it would be too arcady. I bought Enthusia a couple weeks ago because I wanted something to break up the monotony of playing one racing game. I realize that I love about 25% of it and hate the rest. Primarily the fact that you have to race cars that are "theoretically" way out of your league to progress. I think if you introduce AI characters in GT5 its going to have the same effect. I think the best thing about Gran Turismo is its a car based game. As you acquire better cars, you must adapt and learn to control them at the limit. I don't want to worry about personalities, or characters, I just want to race in a series and have an AI system that recognizes what other cars are doing around them and acts like a person, not a slot car on a track. I think having some variety is a good thing, but I don't want Gran Turismo to be a character based game.
