And remember that the Alfa is no Mazda3 bread-and-butter hatch - it's a stylish premium-hatch like the Mini.

Nah, that's what marketeers want you to believe. In reality it's just a more expensive Fiat Grande Punto that will probably have a comparable cheap interior. Nothing premium about that new Alfa. The exterior is stylish though.

It'll depend on what they market it against. If it goes up against the Cooper, it'll cost more and I would expect a classy interior from a more expensive car. If they want it to compete with the 206 and things, I'm sure it will have a less decent interior, partly because the other cars in the class will have it and partly because in that segment, the looks alone can probably bring lots of sales.

The car will be way too expensive. Price of the basic MiTo over here will be a little higher than the basic Cooper One, which costs a little over 30.000 Dollar. I would go for the Fiat 500 if I wanted a fancy Italian, is cheaper and doesn't look cross-eyed...

For all we know Alfa may surprise us and sell the MiTo for $22-26k. Which would be fantastic value for something that looks that good and ushers a whole new set of petrol heads into the club.

"You can't be a true petrol head without ever owning an Alfa Romeo." An old and wise person once said this. :D

Anyone have any idea when Alfa Romeo is actually coming over here? Isn't it 2012? I hope our new mileage crunch won't have any effect on them selling cars in the states.

I believe they are coming later this year or early next. So you should start to see them on the roads in the next year.

The mileage crunch? Fuel costs over $6.50 a gallon all across Europe. If Alfa can meet the efficiency demands of the Europeans, I have no doubt they will meet whatever demands this country will put out.

Wise? JC?

When I was 17 and a passenger in a friends Alfa Romeo sprint where a front inboard brake rotor actually fell out giving us no brakes (handbrake is connect to the front too) causing us to use a rear of another car for brakes...... My Alfa Romeo owning days suddenly became much less likely.

Personally I do not like this Mi.To all that much.

Calendar year 2009 for the 2010 model year was the last I had heard, although, I think we're getting a few 8Cs this year. I think... They change it every couple of months...

Sooooo one of the front rotors fell off and you lost all brakes? Did it tear out the brake lines or what?

The front rotor fell out causing the caliper piston the pop out losing all front brake pressure, the pedal then fell to the floor when pressed and even the rear brakes had very little effect at that time, in a matter of a second or so we hit the car infront.

All I know as a passenger the drivers pedal fell to the floor, he did try the hand brake but that also failed, he could have tryied to pump as much pressure into the rear brakes as possible but had very little time and is not really a mechanically minded person. We were actually in a tow at the time (with a tow rope) due to clunking he had heard earier when driving, he didn't want to risk it (lucky we didn't). The tow rope was as expected fairly short so it happened really fast.

?! huh? musta been a cheap freind or the brakes were to expensive to bother fixing :P
brakes are about the only thing cheap to fix up here.

What? He didn't know anything was wrong with them, he was driving and heard a clunk on occasion (He didn't know what it came from), he decided he would rather a tow, during the tow the rotor fell out. What has that got to do with being cheap?

The inboard brake rotors are between the gearbox and driveshaft of the front wheels, the clunk he heard (like a buggered uni joint type clunk) was during accel and braking, due to the bolts falling out and causing movement (he didn't know what was wrong at the time)

Having seen in real life pics I dont like this little car anymore. It really doesnt look as sporty and elegant with flowing curvaceous lines like it did in the press photos. Will see this car in the flesh at the british motorshow.

Considering what else is out there, I still say its good-looking. A few of the North American automotive press people got to take one for a drive earlier this week and them came away extremely impressed by the overall nature of the car... Which will likely be the excuse made by everyone who drives it. It may not look great on the outside, but my-God, it drives wonderfully.

:sly: (kidding...)

That car looks nasty with eyeliner. Chrome it back up and I suspect it will be back to being awesome.

yeah the GTA version or whatever the top of the line one will be called should look good I hope. Us europeans are going to be getting alot of exciting new hot hatches over this year and next. :D

This car is very good looking, but it does have some awkward/quirky styling features. Overall though, it works for me and I would definitely consider it based on looks. I am sure it has a wonderful driving experience. Hopefully the United States will get this car when Alfa Romeo come back to this side of the pond.

Yeah, seriously. Way too tall and not awesomely low and spread like the press photos would lead you to believe.

It looked like a mazdaspeed 3 in the press photos but that on-the-road picture makes it look more like it has my Hyundai's dimensions.

Toronado has the answer - a bit of chrome around the lights and the shield-grille, and it should look good again.

Ok I like this car again now, but only when fitted with the bigger alloys and with the sports suspension which makes the car sit lower. Interior was pleasant, not audi great but perfectely acceptable and nothing there to put you off buying the car. The general public seemed to like it also.

Roll on the faster versions

Interestingly the test car in Evo had the black trim around the lights, but the test car in the Telegraph Motoring had the chrome around the lights.

Yeah, I noticed the Autoblog bit about the MiTo racing-school had some black-trimmed and some chrome-trimmed ones. The chrome lights make them look bigger - and better...

Interestingly it doesn't make a bit of difference in how stodgy the finished product is.

The thing is, if you look at the publicity photos from the front page, none of them have a full-frontal view of the car.

And in terms of front height, I'd say it's no different to the Fiat 500.

Yeah, the publicity photos make good use of myspace angles.

I still want to see in-public photos of the rear of the car though. I hope that at least looks as nice as it did.
