Nicest part of hell
Hi!

Is there any racing simulation alternative to Gran tourismo for the PC?
I am searching for a full racing game with great detailed driving physics, cockpit view, real circuits, weather and so on, but I could not find a game that suits half of my points listed. Iam looking for a really realistic hardcore racing sim, just racing - nothing else, like racing LMGTP's.

I was looking around and doing some research and I only found following games::indiff:

RFactor: Seems to have a very good driving physics engine, although graphics are not so good and the available cars dont look very impressive. A Formula 1 car, some touring cars and thats it. I am not even sure if it features cockpit view.

DTM Race Driver 2: I played this game some time ago, did not like it. Driving physics were very odd and the career mode was just plain annoying. Altough graphics were very nice and AI was not bad too.

DTM Race driver 3 Looks like RD2 just with a tad better graphics. Maybe it even has the same DTM-RD2 physics.

And thats it. I didn not list NFS and F1 games.

Iam lost, I thought I would find a lot of nice high-end racing simulations to choose, but I came up with almost nothing! HELP!

Any suggestions?

Thanks for listening.

All PC sims have cockpit view.

GTR2

Live for Speed.

Rfactor.

There is no PC sim that has the same amount of car selection as GT, but they all have superior physics.

hmmm, i was dissapointed with the physics of rfactor, but the graphics are very good for some mods. like the 2005 f1 mod.

My fav racing game for the last 4 years has been the ever-evolving Live For Speed. its got many different types of cars, and a decent selection of cars and tracks. If online racing and realisitc physics+ force feedback are most important to you, LFS is the game to get.

Speaking of the ever-evolving LFS, did they ever release a newer version that allows you to stall the car or flat-shift using the G25?

If these things are what you're looking for above all else, look no further than Live for Speed.

It's got the most realistic physics this side of a real car, excellent online multiplayer, system requirements that are old-PC-friendly, a relatively simple and easy-to-use GUI, and will only get better over time (the current version is still considered an "alpha" by its developers, even though it's more finely polished than some published games). It's also got full support for the DFP/G25.

On the downside, its car and track selection is not only small, but mostly fictional, although there's a decent amount of variety to be found nonetheless (circuits range from a Jamaican road course to a Japanese oval-roadcourse complex to a British city; cars range from a Mini Cooper wannabe to a Caterham 7 wannabe to the BMW Sauber F1). There's also no weather or night racing.

real circuits, weather and so on...
...like racing LMGTP's.

rFactor's physics engine is above average in the PC world (which means it's far, far, far ahead of GT4), but nothing sensational. Like the GTR series, it's based on the ISI engine, but unlike GTR2, rFactor does not have StarForce. With the FIA GT Mod for rFactor (which replicates GTR2's content) there's no reason to buy GTR2 and infect your computer with StarForce.

The game has good graphics, but unfortunately, it's a performance hog, so it'll either run or look like crap on any computer that isn't top-of-the-line-as-of-two-seconds-ago.

Don't worry about car selection -- the whole point of rFactor is its third-party mods. Try perusing the selection at http://www.rfactorcentral.com/ and see if you still think it's unimpressive (be sure to check out the WIP section, too).

Cockpit view is not only included, but is adjustable in many ways.

DTM Race Driver 2
...
DTM Race driver 3
...
Don't bother. Those two games barely deserve to be called "sims" in the console world. When it comes to PC games, they're hilariously outclassed.

RFactor has a Porsche 917-30 under development! I always wanted to throw that thing around curcuit LaSarthe. Maybe there is even a Porsche 956. And they really feature cockpit view? I think I've found what I was looking for. The tracks look great and there is even the Nordschleife and Kyalami!
Thanks guys, thats why I love GtPlanet. Fast and competent help from pros.:)👍

I may sound stupid, but what is StarForce? A spy program?

Looking at the system requirements I am in the middle, 1048 RAM, 4,5 GHZ dual core cpu, radeon 9200. Hope it runs flawlessy with my setup. Does the G25 work with it?

Star Force is a program some games use for copywright, but it installs onto your PC and it has caused some people a world of trouble. It's never had so much as a hiccup with me, but like I said, some people have had nightmares.

.

GTR2, unlike the original GTR and GTLegends, does not, I repeat, does not have Starforce.

Seeing as how you seem to have glossed over it entirely, I strongly recommend you give the Live for Speed demo a try, Michael88.

It doesn't? I never heard anything about SimBin dropping it, but Wikipedia backs you up.

No it doesn't. :) Only F1C, GTR, GTR2 and RACE.
It doesn't? What on earth was ISI thinking?

I think they were thinking about mods as a priority when they coding the game ?

So I guess they just omitted it assuming modders would do that.

rFactor is great, a million mods a million tracks, the cars you saw were the basic cars you get with RF. In the bigger picture you have everything from the lastest F1 cars to group B rally cars, lawnmowers to Citroen Berlingo vans! caterhams, drifting mods, FNippon, GP2, ETCC, FIA GT, SCC, LMES, NAGT, V8 supercars, toyota atlantics, champ car, nascar, roll royce racing, clio cups, megane trophy, gallardo racing, M3 cups, porsche cups, zonda racing, leon supercopa, classic F1, karting, Formula BMW, formula 3, off road trucks and buggys, sprint cars, craftsman truck series...im outta breath. Thats not even all of them. And yes, they have the tracks to match;)

Variable weather is planned to be an option in RFactor in the future, it is sometihng that ISI plan on adding.

Maybe they are waiting for DX10... The rain in GTR2, for example, consumes too much graphical and cpu power. :scared:

you make me wish i could get high speed internet even more now. thanks:( :(

oh well i got one part of the puzle with my new hotseat

Only ever PC game in the general mold of GT was "Sega GT Homologation Special," a PC port of the successful Dreamcast game. I reviewed this game on this site. My true criticism of this game is that it doesn't seem very exciting compared to GT2 (at the time because GT3 was still in the works). The tracks are pretty boring, except for the Night Section tracks. Best feature involved the ability to build cars in a factory with your choice of engine specifications. Remember this saying for this game:

"There is no replacement for displacement." -Gran Turismo series

Cars will be rated on displacement. Make sure you are careful picking the proper cars to use in a certain displacement race. You may have a car rated at just over the intended requirement for the race, and will have to get another car (or build a newer car with new engine specifications).

I know this thread is about alternatives to GT, but I've thought of this as "what's the best racing game that is like Gran Turismo, only different?" The longest shot of GT fun for PC fans is if Turn 10 decides to make Forza Motorsport for PCs much like how HALO was brought to PCs. But that's my unique view on this topic.
