Am I the only one who hates the DFP???

The noise of the DFP is pretty bad. I purchased one while GT4P was around, and I just never got into the habit of using it. I contemplated using it on Mission #34, but I've gotten within 4 seconds of it in the last few days by switching from AT to MT w/DS2. The DS2 just seems to take less work for me and when I'm playing a game, I want less work, more fun.

if you guys have problems with sounds, have you tried using headphones? Currently i use wireless headphones (since my tv's speakers are more or less crap) and the sound is much more direct and it mutes out the whine of the steering wheel. I guess for the people with the hardcore sound systems, this idea will not fly too far, but hell it worked for me.

Covering your own ears doesn't mean the others can't hear it. The DFP is loud and sometimes annoying for the ones who are not playing.

I'm using a cheap $20 folding table to mount the DFP. The wheel isn't THAT secure, there's barely any leg space for pedals, but it gets the job done. Not to mention it made my left foot braking soooo much better in real life.

with your hands at 9 and 3 oclock, the most you should be turning the wheel is 180 degrees in each direction, to where your arms cross and collide with eachother. this should only be happening on hairpin turns. (and yes, this is in 900 degree mode)
and turning the wheel too fast to where it makes too much noise means you're trying to correct - another thing you shouldnt be doing.

improve your driving skill and the noise and "reverse search" problems will go away

QFT. Most problems people have with the DFP are because they aren't handling their car correctly.

And as for 900* mode being TOO much, I think this is complete BS. When you are actually driving, you never need to turn the wheel ALL the way. The 900* is just so that the steering is most realistic.

I absolutly love my Logitech Pro from the first time I plugged it in.It doesnt get any better. :)

The DFP adds SO much to the gaming experience. With the FF, you can clearly feel the differences between cars - which is something a DS2 kind of lacks.

Like others have said, you don't really need to turn the wheel to full lock in either direction if you drive smoothly.

However, I do wish they adjusted the steering feel so it would more accurately match the car you're driving.

Example: Modern day road cars have power steering and there is really no effort needed to turn the wheel at road speeds. But with the DFP, there's still some resistance when turning at low speeds, even with the Power Steering Assist On. It's probably due to the FF.
FF off is too loose and FF on is a bit to tight.

As a test: Go drive the "Costa <something>" (Forward version) track (the one used in the 2nd Special Condition Race). The two back to back REALLY tight hairpins are taken at very low speeds yet it's frustrating to have to turn the wheel so slowly during the turn. Just can't turn the wheel fast enough. But in a real car, like my WRX, at low speeds (20km/h or less), you can turn the wheel with a finger. Can't do that with the DFP though :grumpy:.

Maybe it'll be something to work on with GT5 and the next generation of these wheels. :)

it only took me about 3 minutes (1 race) to get used to the DFP with GT4. I just move my Monitor to the side and put my TV on the desk. so its pretty sturdy and the wheel doesnt move around out of place at all. and i have a compfy chair too.

I love this wheel. And I'm suprized people who actually drive complain about GT4 being to difficult. I think gt4 is hella easier than real life. Drifting in real life is a different story.

i have a red/leather momo force at present and IMO the wheel is the best wheel ever made and due to the money grabbing scheming bunch at sony who have made my wheel not work im considering a DFP.

Is there any way to turn off the 900 degree lock in gt4? or does it auto detect to 900 degrees? because race cars don't have 900 degress more like 300 degrees.

900 degress lock on the road cars sounds like fun though.

you dont have to turn 900 degrees to max lock with race cars. Infact, i use the paddles when driving race cars.

Anyone who perfers a controller over the DFP is a complete noob. or they are disabled in some way.

Anyone buy the lap attachment that goes between your thighs and sits in front of your balls/vagina? Worth the 20, or should I just mount it to something?

I love the DFP. If you love driving, you'll love this wheel! A racing sim was not made to drive with a hand controller. After all, I couldn't imagine trying to drive my personal vehicle to work with a DS2. But put a DFP in my car and I'd be right at home. It's simple: DFP=realism. IF that's not what you're looking for, stay clear.

the lap attachment sucks with the DFP. Only Buy it as a last resort.

i think the original problem here is pretty obvious

dodge intepid seat goes to the basement
playstation, television and sound system goes to the basement
bar fridge is purchased
one happy DFP user :D

I just went to Home Depot here in MD, bought $20 worth of wood, and BUILT my own cockpit. It's not that hard people. If you want the premier console driving experience, get one of these and build a cockpit to your own body type. It's worth it, trust me. I have back problems after an hour or two of playing games, but after I built a cockpit around my comp. chair, it was smooth sailing.

My biggest beef with the DFP is that the steering is so slow. Attempting to correct (or maintain) a lurid drift with the DFP often results in a big spin because you can't counter-steer fast enough because you're fighting the FF.

NOTE to Logitech: the steering goes LIGHT when the car starts to rotate... it doesn't load up such that you can't turn the wheel.

That, combined with searching for the reverse button after a spin (which could be anywhere with 900' steering) can be a real piss-off.

Otherwise... it's great. As long as you don't mind losing the occasional race because you spin... in a situation that would be EASY to correct with a controller... or in real life.

its not that bad in gt4 :P. you shouldnt be attempting to max lock in gt4 anywayz.

Full 900 mode in LFS is tricky... 720 is perfect though.

One great thing about LFS is you can adjust caster. and you can feel the difference if you use 720 degrees. Too bad they didnt do that for gt4. If they gave the DFP wheel the power needed for fully simulate 900 degrees. IT really would be a danger for kids. :) I mean, look how fast the wheel spins in D1 cars because of the geometry and caster mods they have made.

That area is more politely referred to as your crotch. Please avoid the unecessary tastelessness.

And that lap mount thing sucks. I got one with my Momo and it was useless for me.

You should stick with the DFP. It took me about two weeks of using it before I got aquainted with it, now, 3 months later, i'd say I'm pretty adept at it; after using the DFP I couldn't go back to using a controller.

I saw a DFP today in Media Play, picked up the box, thought it looked neat, then looked at the price. The fact I can walk into a store with 100+ dollars cash and not be able to afford the wheel REALLY turns me off. I just don't think it's worth the massive price...

Mine was $104.95 with free shipping from Amazon.

DFP is superb because you have more control over the car than a controller allows you, therefore your lap times should improve if you practice enough. I looked at the top times for gt4 at db.granturismo.de and most are done with a wheel.

Question though, is it possible to turn off the force feedback completely in gt4?

For my birthday last week my lovely wife bought me what I thought was gonna be the prime accessory for mt GT driving.

Turns out either I am a horrible gamer, or the wheel is just too over the top and belongs in an actual arcade environment.

I could never get comfortable with it. I'd have to buy a stand or build a cockpit to use it. And that would look a tad tacky in our family room. To understand my wife you'd have to also realize she made me take my PERFECT gaming chair and put it in the basement, a driver's seat out of a '03 Dodge Intrepid complete with center armrest/storage and dual cupholders. :)
I like the feedback and realism it brings to driving, but 900 degrees? Too much. I'd find myself hacking away at it with my sometimes brutal driving style, and on the occasions where I did spin out, it took WAY to long to find reverse, cut the wheel all the way to the left or right to back up, then cut it all the way back the other way and be on my way. In all honesty I never tried it on 200 degrees, but the other problem I had with it overruled my decision to keep it.
And that is the NOISE. I play mostly at night when the wife is sleeping (boy, she sure is the reason behind alot of this, eh?) and I could barely hear my own TV over the noise the wheel makes, especially when sawing the crap out of it trying to save my car from a spin, or trying to drift it.
All this on top of being easily spun out by other cars (not being able to save my own) I took it back to the store the next day after getting it.
Ihave NO problem with my DS2 controller, and have been slowly but surely passing all licence tests (mostly silver....) and driving missions (haven't tried the SLR at the Ring yet....).

I'm sure SOMEONE else out there has had a similar experiance, and I'm not saying it's a bad wheel (I have a Microsoft racing wheel sans vibration for my PC, and I LOVE IT), I'm just saying it doesn't fit my life/driving style.

I have been using the wheel since i got the game and for a while on gran turismo 3, i t took me only about 30 minutes to adjust to the new steering on gt4 but i have not used the controller once for gt4 since i got it. I have over 70% of the game complete and have had no problems. I guess youyr just not cut out for the wheel SO STOP USING IT, :dunce: APPARENTLY U SUCK!

I Turned off the Feedback, and put some rubber bands for resistance. Way more realistic than the jerky feedback, or no resistance whatsoever when you have it unplugged.

Does your TV have a headphone socket?

...........you can have it as load as you like!

and as for sawing and drifting, mate you are doing it wrong, control smooth is the way to go, leave drifting for wood.

Looks like I'm getting a new pedal base.

My spring broke and forced me to improvise a fix for it.

Also, while I was at it, I 'improvised' a harder brake pedal spring.

Now the gas is too hard to floor and the brake pedal creaks when you move it slowly.

The moral of the story: Don't be so dissatisfied with certain aspects of things as to try and alter them. It will only create more problems.

I am intoxicated and posting

Forgive any spelling mistakes (can't see).

I finally got use to the wheel and I really like it but it is a pain in 900 degree mode at times.

And it is way way too noisy. I wake early and I wouldn't dare use it until everyone is awake in the house. Dissapointing.

I'd like it a ton more if I had a decent place to put it. Right now it just sits on my lap, and it's the most uncomfortable thing you could imagine. So I generally just use my DS2 until I can find someplace to put my DFP.

I made a very simple butlight weight and very sturdy stand with some 2 x 2 aluminum tubing. If I can post a picture you can see it. Weighs about 6-8 pounds.

How do you post a picture? I uploaded one now what?

I would say this is a fairly straight forward issue, if you're an adult, with a driving licence, and some driving skill, the DFP is your controller. If you're mode of transportation is still a long yellow bus, and occasionally a bicycle, then use the Dualshock.
