My suggestion:

Buy jeans from Old Navy or from Levis. They tend to look better, last longer, and occasionally are cheaper than that of American Eagle. To be honest, 99.8% of my jeans are from either Old Navy or Levis as they are the two brands that I trust the most, and moreover, look best on me.

Generally speaking, I've managed to stay away from AE and AF as much as possible as they seem to be pretty good at stealing my style about two years after I get to it, given that I generally have had to change every once in a while because they adapt to me. I don't like to look "trendy" too often, thus my current look has remained "casual outdoorsman," despite the fact that it is "soooo 2004."

As for T-Shirts, my suggestion is to just go to Steve and Barry's. Yeah, I work there, but considering that you get three T-Shirts for $19.99, that is a pretty good deal... Be it a U of M short sleever, "24 The Series" licensed shirts, or even those stupid joke shirts that douche bags wear at parties and such. I have amassed quite a collection of T-Shirts since my employment in the summer of 2004, to the point in which I don't have enough room for everything... The sad part is, there are a few more shirts I need to buy... University of Virgina Lacrosse anyone?

EDIT: On the subject of shoes, the most expensive pair I have ever bought came around last year when I spent $90 on a new pair of Merrell boots for school/work. They look nice with my "casual outdoorsman" look, and given that they make them just up the road in Rockford, Michigan, I got a bit of a deal on them as well.

Personally, my favorite brand of jeans are Lee, they are soft, durable, and they have all the in between sizes, because I am anawkward teen, I had to hunt for my pairs, which happen to be 30 waist, 27 leg. All of the others were either 30 26 or 31 27. :grumpy:

I pay $50+ for flip-flops. Yes, flip-flops. It's stupid, but I like them. My shoes cost around the same, unless they're boots - which obviously cost more. I shop AE & Old Navy, but I refuse to even walk into an Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostle, Hollister, GAP, etc. And I don't wear clothes with huge logo's advertising the company.

If I buy something expensive it's going to be something of quality that last 2-3 years or until I get sick of it.

 I just want comfortable pair of running shoes and for the gym because ALL of my shoes since fourth grade were skating shoes. Honest to God. Freshman year I bought my first pair of Reebok's and Nike's. I'm getting Nike's from now on though.

And clothes, a pain in the butt. I looked through all of my jeans just now really quick. Out of jeans I still wear and still have from last year in my drawers... I have 13 Old Navy jeans, 3 Levis ( That I wore once each ) And these new AE ones  This is all from last year to this year. I wear probably 3 or 4 of them though.

My youngest son likes AE stuff.
And since he got some for Christmas, he doesn't look like he slept in his clothes for a week. Finally.
I just pretty much live in scrubs.
Jeans (Wrangler) on the weekends, and whatever guitar manufacturer tee (discreet logos only) I can scrounge up.

I used to go to AE, but maybe for a year. Now I'm pretty much just raid the sale racks at stores that don't advertise themselves on everything. Like Gap, J.Crew, Banana Republic. But for J. Crew & Banana Republic, I don't think I've EVER bought anything that wasn't on sale, I just cant justify $90 on jeans, when I can get the same ones 6 months later for $35.

Usually it starts as a small tear and just gets bigger. I don't really mind too much though since they last me 2 or 3 years before this happens, which I can deal with. Plus, $25 really isn't that much to spend on a pair of jeans.

Holy crap, they're 25 bucks? Okay, nevermind then. I thought they'd be like 80 bucks, as all of those prep-fashion companies like to charge. What is that one place in the malls whose store is designed like (and smells horribly like) a beach bungalo thing? Is that Banana Republic? Hollister? Their stuff is mega expensive.

Well it depends on the style and such, but the ones I buy are usually in that price range. I have better things to spend my money on than 80 dollar jeans, trust me.

I love AE (American Eagle). I shoot it all the time. I like using the brass for reloading purposes.

Don't know anything about the clothes, though.

The knee in a pair of mine tore as I was leaning forward with my knees bent for something. There was a lot of pressure on the fabric at that point, but I'm still not sure it should have ripped.
I have never had this happen on any pair of pants. All I can say is loose-fit jeans, or comfortable fit, depending on the brand.

I can honestly say that I have never entered an American Eagle, Abercrombie, Hollister, or those likes of stores. I have been in an Old Navy twice to buy Christmas gifts for my wife. While at Old Navy I saw a couple of shirts that I thought looked good and the only brand label was on the tag. Within a month I found loose threads.

The main reason why I never visit these stores, aside from the ridiculously high prices, is they are in the mall. When I was a kid the mall was a wonderful place with hobby shops, indoor putt-putt, comic shops, etc. Now it is nothing but a trendy, over-priced fashion show. When I was growing up your Mallrats were like Brodie Bruce, but now they are more like Shannon Hamilton. So, I avoid the mall, which means I am rarely near one of these stores.

Now, I do shop at Kohl's, because they like to build their own building and refuse to be part of the mall. I also get good prices on their clothes because I wait for a sale. I get most of my shoes there because it isn't uncommon to find a nice pair of $50-$60 shoes on sale for $30. The other place I will visit is the Levi's/Dockers store. I manage to get jeans and my work khakis all in one stop. Since the nearest Levi's/Dockers is in outlet malls I may get new shoes too, if needed, at one of the nearby shoe stores. One of these outlet mall trips will be my clothes shopping for the year, if not two years.

The worst clothing experience I ever had was in Van Maur in one of the local malls. It had just opened and I had never been in one before. My wife wanted a pea coat, so I went in to see if they had any. The live piano music should have been my first tip, but I kept going, even after seeing each shoe individually on clear display stands. While walking through I saw a shirt I thought looked really good and so I looked at the price tag. Anyone that is willing to pay over $100 for a shirt is insane! I walked out and have never been back since.

Oh, they are - they're not super tight or anything. I was just kind of crouching and then I heard a RIP! You're right though, shouldn't have happened.

That store you mentioned sounds like Nordstrom - piano in the middle of the store, expensive clothes. I saw a Burberry scarf for 300 bucks once. A scarf.

Ya know, I've blown out some pants before as well, but most times it was in extreme conditions. I destroyed a pair of Old Navy jeans not too long ago, as I was bending down to grab some papers dropped on the floor, I heard a pretty nasty tear. Under similar circumstances about a year or so previous to that, I destroyed a pair of Steve and Barry's jeans while moving from my old house to the townhouse I live in now.

Sometimes I believe jeans rip for the right reason at the right time. Often times my tears happen from the pockets of my jeans, which leads me to believe that I either have a huge ass, or I'm doing something to wear out the stitching on them.

...But even my tightest jeans (32X32 Levi's Slim Straights [I know, must be Emo pants...]) have yet to blow out, and I wear them to work quite often...

That had better be the golden fleece for that price.

The only time I've blown out the knee on a pair of Levi's was when I was replacing the intake manifold on my Blazer and put my knee on the battery. Acid ate through them in a quick hurry.

On the topic of expensive shoes, mine typically run in the $60 range, but my wife just bought a pair of shoes for work (ER nurse) for $130 that usually last around 6-9 months.

I shopped at AE all throughout high school. Mostly for bracelets, necklaces, and jeans. I always liked the medium pricing, much cheaper than Abercrombie and Hollister, the "casual luxury" stores.

I now mostly only shop Express for men. Great looking clothes. Great quality.

LL Bean and Lacoste are also close favorites.

I wear whatever they sell at Marshalls that doesn't look like it came out of a rap catalog. I have a mega-eclectic T-shirt gallery as well.

I don't think I've ever bought any shoes over $30.

I tells ya, those shoes took one hell of a beating! And have been covered with all kinds of substances.

Best pair of shoes I ever owned. 👍

If it weren't for them, I would still be wearing $10 Velcro sneakers.

Meh. I'm a sucker for good looking shoes and nice "dress" clothes, (i.e: Football jerseys, dress shirts, etc.) but other than that, I don't like to spend a whole lot of cash on clothes. Most of my pants (actually, all of them) have come from Old Navy. Most of my shirts are from there also. I have a couple of closet racks full of shirts, so it's hard to tell where the majority originated from. I usually never spend more than $75 on every-day-beat-em-up shoes, and no more than $115 on dress shoes (which usually last a couple of years if my foot doesn't magically get 3 sizes bigger). The most expensive clothing item in my closet right now is probably my Chad Johnson jersey (a lovely $285 pricetag), which I only wear on special occasions.

And my $.02 on AE is a pretty good rating. I like their clothes, although their cotton shirts seem to shrink alot more than cotton shirts from other places do.

That latter condition is the tricky part. ;) Marshall’s is awe-some for saving $$$ on clothing, but it seems like everything there is XXL. :grumpy: (I’m 5'9"-ish and 130 lbs. with a full stomach, so I’m not exactly made out for those kinds of sizes…)

I've bought some jeans there. That's about it. I dont tend to shop too much at places like that or Hollister. I just dont see the logic in paying 80 dollars for pants unfit for a homeless person. I dont like Old Navy. They're a little cheaper than the above mentioned but it's also cheap made and seems to fall apart quickly.

I'm going to go both with and against the grain in this one, Matt:

First, AE's jeans are pretty crap quality. Obviously they go through the whole "vintaging" process (hah!), but everyone I know who's had a pair went through them in a couple months. Do you guys have Bluenotes/Thrifty's on the other side of the border? Other than Levi's (which you've already mentioned aren't for you), that's the only other place I buy my jeans. Cheaper than the average AE stuff (even though they're all owned by one parent company, I believe), and lasts a long time. Most of my jeans have actually been with me for at least 2 years with no real signs of wear. And I have half as many pairs as you, so they're all getting a fair amount of wear-time ;).

But I will go against something throughout this thread; what's so bad about tighter jeans? I'm not talking those rediculously tight, tapering things the mallrats love these days, but just a good fitted pair of jeans? I find baggier jeans look very slummy (for lack of a better description, I'm tired!), and I don't think that bending could cause too much of an issue with them, like tearing or ripping. My only reasoning is that girls seem to wear jeans exponentially tighter and they're not constantly ripping their pants apart (booo). Most of my jeans are tighter boot-cuts and I find them really comfortable, but maybe I'm just used to it.

As for AE, A&F, Hollister, etc... can't stand them for the most part either. I do most of my shopping, jeans aside, online anyways, but I do own a few shirts from AE and Hollister, all from the discount racks, and all either polos or button-ups. For that money, I go to Urban Outfitters, because at least more of their stuff is a bit less cookie-cutter (and I just wait for sales there too, heh).

A lot of my friends buy from American Eagle - they seem to love it. I personally haven't been to one of their stores though.

Just more proof that no man shalt ever understand women.

XXL is a fitted shirt for me. :) Therefore, the trouble is not the size, (although some shirts have that tent-cut obnoxiously baggy rap-look) but rather, avoiding things like this:

Wardrobe ricers.

The best shoes I ever owned were the $20 Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars (Chucks).

I had them all through high school and they outlasted two pairs of leather Nike sneakers. Heck, the only reason I got rid of them was I outgrew them.

Most of my jeans have actually been with me for at least 2 years with no real signs of wear. And I have half as many pairs as you, so they're all getting a fair amount of wear-time ;).
My lawn mowing jeans are the ones I bought when I fiorst went to college. God, that was nearly ten years ago (sigh :indiff:).

Personally, I have to be picky about the cut of my jeans. Tight fitting around my legs isn't such a bad thing. I grew up in the country, wandering through the fields and woods and know the value of having pants that something can't crawl up the leg of. That said, I don't like to be cramped in other areas of my body, if you catch my drift. Some guys (usually wearing cowboy hats and boots) wear them so tight that I can see things I don't want to see. All I ask is that you don't be that guy. I don't want them to be so baggy I look like I am trying to be a hip-hop star, just enough for some breathing room.

As for the mallrats and their tapered jeans, some of them wear pink shirts, and I swear they have some make up on, so what can you do?

My only reasoning is that girls seem to wear jeans exponentially tighter and they're not constantly ripping their pants apart (booo).
And God bless them! 👍

Yeah, but my eyes constantly rip apart instead. Muffin tops = BAD!

Even Speedo Guy agrees!

I really cant stand people with really baggy clothes.
I prefer my jeans to be comfortable, not stupidly tight, but not really loose either.
Being in Australia, either we don't get or I just plain haven't noticed most of the stores you guys talk about, but I like my jeans to be neat, UNripped/torn (can't stand that either..) but I don't mind a bit of fading, but not too extreme.

Meh. LEATHER shoes from Nike, Adidas, etc... Are bound to crease or get ruined easily. I'm buying Nike Shox next for gym and running and then Nike Dunk's, Nike Airmax or Puma Roma's for casual.

And I have one pair of jeans that are looser than the others I have, but they still don't look too thuggish either. I wear 28x30 and or 29x31 usually.

And also... I hate torn jeans or purposely ripped jeans, but I don't mind the fading that is already put into them. A single color pair of jeans for me is out of my league.
