An idea for a better Le Mans experience for PD?

True, but MAG didn't have the best graphics, GT5's are way more advanced than that game. And to be honest it wasn't exactly 128 vs. 128. It broke everything into smaller groups so it was actually similar to other shooters in that regard.

But, you point is well made. It shows that massive games can happen.

Yeah, but you could still go and fight at the place on other troop was fighting, right?

I just wanted to say that having 30-40 cars at once could be possible If PD decided to make cars/tracks less detailed etc.
My 5 year old lap top is able to "host" races in rFactor with 31 cars (F1 1988 mod) and great AI + graphics which look pretty good (with MUCH better textures then our standard cars, eventhough its just a mod)

I know this is the 24hrs on the Nurburgring, but this video will give you some idea how much passing and driving off line the faster cars have to do.

Excellent video, and a great demo of how lappery works. Just be courteous and keep a steady line, stay aware that they are going to be coming through so let them, but don't agressively try to force them through(like you have to do with rFactor bots LOL). The driver's I've heard generally say the most important thing is to always drive the same way so they don't need to guess what you'll do. The scariest moment I saw was when one car tried to jump out of the way and both cars had to adjust their line at the last second, just after Kallenhard.

Unfortunately we don't have blinkers to signal our intention to the faster cars. Also the AI is probably never going to be very good at judgement or awareness that you're coming so it's best if they don't do too much different.

Whilst what you're saying about the whole track not being in the memory is partly true, what I've bolded isn't. The whole track is always in the memory and the AI cars are really going round (This has been proven by tests), however the level of detail is vastly reduced for parts not in view. That is why you can't switch to other cars. It's not that they aren't there, it's that they're in very low quality, as is the track environment around them.
If the AI (cars and not just a dot on the mini-map) was actually going around the track it wouldn't be any problem watching them in replay (This is the limitation of the Dirt engine/rally racing). Also AI speed/time is different (often slower) around the player than outside a certain distance as if there's a bubble around the player.
P.S There is an AI tool for the PC which improved the AI and make it more consistent. It would be great to have something like this for GT5.

As far as OP I feel this is asking/expecting too much for GT5. There needs to be a game specially design for Le Mans (endurance races). It's the same with Nascar; it needs it's own engine to do it right. I have no doubt NTG 2011 will be better than Nascar in GT5.

nothin like when u get tunnel vision at 230 mph from racing so long and then suddenly realize that Oreca Viper you thought was a mile away is actually right in front of you.. spinning... because you just creamed it.. id be ok with the half and half idea if the slower cars actually made an attempt to get out of your way.. lol

Well if they implemented the ability to play the 3 different classes in Le Mans then you could play as one of the slower classes and move out of the way when you see the LMP car coming behind you:)

I know what you mean though. I think PD really has no clue how to program the AI or they need to scrap this engine and try something else that give them tighter control of the AI behavior.

If they want to make it more authentic, they need to A. Combine A and B-spec for endurance races, so you get the real feel of sharing a car. B. they need to make it so even the standard cars can use headlights. I don't like the idea of my Audi R8 not having a chance because I can't see at night. C. Make the headlights actually work. In my personal experience on a slightly dark tv, the headlights in general offer little to no help to me at all. D. They need to incorporate the multiple class tiers. E. Seeing as at the IRL Le Mans there is a big podium appearance, they should put something like that into the game. I mean, it doesn't have to be perfect, just a nice short video of you and your fellow co-drivers standing atop the podium holding the trophy high up. Is that too much to ask for?
