So...my aunt will be purchasing a new car (most possibly). We're open to any car but cant be smaller than a camry or accord in size, and preferably a sedan and coupes. We're looking at new and used (can't be older than 2 years of age) cars and a price bracket of 24K-45k CAD.

Criteria
sedan or coupe
nothing smaller than a corolla
V6, or inline 4
new and used (cannot be older than two years of age)
price braket of 20-45k CAD
preferably european or japanese
FWD or 4WD

So far our shortlist is:

2009 Honda Accord LX
2009 Mini Cooper (my Aunt thinks its omega cute, thats why i can break the rules listed above!!!)
2009 Mercedes C230 4Matic
2007-2009 E92 3XX xi only

EDIT 1:
Late 08 Mini Cooper
My aunt tested a used model with only 260km on the odo. The previous owner ordered the car but at the last minute bought something else. So its basically factory new. They're selling it for 25K at the moment, while a brand new equivalent model would cost 31K. She's pretty much dead set on the car at the moment, but we havent really gone looking at any other cars yet.

There any major problems with this car that i should know about before purchasing it??

The C230 4Matic
Yeah, we probably won't be even considering one of these now, as the model she wants would cost 48K new

EDIT 2
2009 Acura TSX
Parents and aunt are totally digging this car. The base model comes with close to all the necessities our family is looking for. 41K with freight charges and tax already included. You guys think it's worth it? Plus we haven't even begun haggling yet :D

So...now i turn to you guys for help. Any good cars we should look into? Any to avoid?

Technically the car is for my aunt, but although she lives with us, i tend to include her as one of my parents. She just really really likes the mini, so we're gonna bend the rules for that one...

fuel milage errrrrr nothing in the realm of a V8 would be fine, inline 4, v6 is alright
power is irrelevant cause i dont think she can even utilize 150hp with the way she drives
space??? errrrr kinda irrelevant as long as the car has a trunk i think it should pass

I'll add that to the criteria

Problem solved.

I think you'd be hard pressed outside of its Mazda 6 sibling to find a car that is big enough, fuel efficient enough, and altogether cheap enough to meet your criteria.

homesummer...look in post 4, already explained it

and YSSMAN, my aunt is only looking into europeans and japanese and even then, shes still picky as hell (no Audis, Mazdas, Volvos, Saabs).

Believe they didnt make a 07 model...but we looked at some E92's

We just came back from a used dealership.
E92 07 330xi
close to top spec (leather, heated seats, wood, etc) for 33k
good deal?
havent tested it though. Probably will at the end of the week

A damn-shame, really, because at least with Ford/Mazda, you're looking at segment leaders in terms of not only performance and fuel economy, but also in size, price and overall reliability as well.

=-=-=-=-=-=

Otherwise...

They run about $26K in the US, which is a pretty good deal. The 2.0T will maximize performance and fuel economy, the looks are incredible in person as well.

Get her to revise her pickyness. She really is ruling out some of the best cars you can get in that price bracket by saying none of those.

Yeah about her pickyness. I've gotten her a few times and all i get is a...., and then says they arent reliable. It really pisses me off. I'll forward the Passat CC to her. See if she will be willing to even step into the VW showroom (thinks they are also unreliable and ugly):indiff:

How about a Civic or CSX?

Edit: On second thought, have her get a CSX-S in Galaxy Gray and I'll trade her front ends.

She is right on the reliability of the VAG cars. If she drives it pretty easy, she shouldn't have too many huge problems though. Although I would think that the Mazdas would be pretty reliable. Volvo and Saab might be a little below average for reliability though.

I'm not certain on Volvo and Saab overall. Seeing as how Saab for the most part runs corporate pieces, in general, they hold up fairly well. Considering that this generation of 9-3 has been around a while, I'd expect most of the quirks to be worked out. As for Volvo, I think its much the same situation, running a lot of common pieces with Ford and Mazda products. I'd expect them to be no worse than VWs, which have overall improved greatly over the years, but nevertheless have a long way to go before they break back into the top ten.

Srsly though. Ford, Mazda, and the like, top-notch quality and performance. Top-notch.

Do you guys get tax credits in Canada for buying Canadian-built models? I thought I heard that somewhere...

^^well theres nothing that can be done to change her opinion on those brands. She's very into posh badges. Thats the biggest fault with her. Anyways:

To YSSMAN
i dont think we have any tax credits. Im not so sure about that though, its been a while since we bought a car

To Eric
hahaha, aunt hates the civic. I dont think she would be too into the CSX either...

So she wants a car but won't look at some of the best ones available because she doesn't like the badge? Doubt you'd get much help from here.

What about the Legacy? How expensive are those in your parts? They seem to fit most of her criteria, possibly except the badge maybe?

Subies are ok...only cause they 4WD (shes a terrible driver, gets scared of like 1inch of snow)

Just checked the Suby site...starting 26k...i'll forward that to her.

Thanks for the suggestion :D

Also
The cooper is definitely out of the run now. The insurance for that car is 600 more than our existing ES300 :O, and after looking at the JD dependability report 09, they starting to dread the car (aunt still loves it though -_-").

The Acura TSX is an absolute gem, although I have to admit that I prefer the previous generation to that of the current one. One of the bigger problems with the TSX, however, is that it is in an extremely competitive class that is nearly dominated by "regular" models versus that of the "premium" ones. To some extent, you'd be better off with an EX-L Accord than a TSX.
