Any d-pad and/or automatic transmission drifters out there?

I've been playing GT since GT1 and i've grown way too accustomed to using the D-pad, as well as using AT. I know that all the experienced drivers/drifters use the analog stick/steering wheel, and MT, but I want to know if there are any of the latter. Although it's definately possible to drift, and i've gotten a few good laps on autumn ring mini and deep forest, I'm wondering if using the D-pad and AT limits the potential of drifting in GT4 in general. If so, then I may just have to learn the game all over again using the Analog stick.

Any thoughts/comments/opinions are welcome.

I use D-pad and manual transmision.

You can drift with D-pad, but it's the most difficult way to achieve smooth countersteer work. Because you control the steering with the pressure you make with your thumb.

You may countinue using D-pad but you'll need a lot of practice to make a good lap. It's "easy" to make drifts, but it's hard to make 6-7 succesful drifts in-a-row.

About transmision, it's way better MT. Sometimes (I'd say often) in turbo cars you need to drift with medium revs beacuse when you're exiting you need to keep the tyres spinning. In that situations, AT will choose a shorter gear, and when exiting your car will grip, because your tyre's speed is the same as your car's speed.

i use the thumbsticks, but i havent quite gotten myself to use MT. I use AT cos if you want to stick in a gear, if u hold the gearshift (L2 or R2) it'll keep it in the current gear as long as you hold it

i've used an auto for drift because my mate switched it to auto so uncool. just hold in the shift stick to hold her in gear.

I used to use the D-Pad for drifting, but I've been practicing with the Analog Stick every since GT4 came out and now I love it. As far as AT, that's just stupid. I can't imagine drifting an AT car in real life OR in GT4, it's so boring and childish. If you're good enough to drift, then you're good enough to shift.

once you force yourself to learn the ways of MT, you will never go back :D

Yeah, the ammount of control you have over your car (in GT4 and in real life) with a MT is exponential compared to AT. AT sucks, bottom line, and I personally feel a bit of angst towards anyone who drives AT (in GT4 and in real life).

i agree with your comments, and i kinda do feel like a sap driving with AT in gt4, but i guess that's just my lazy personality. i've done grip racing with MT and it does add the extra control and challenge of having 1 more thing to maintain while driving.. Im' sure with enough practice, i can get the hang of drifting with MT.

And yes, in real life, MT is the way to go. It's most definately in my nature to drive a bit more aggressively with MT, and totally granny style with AT.. it's not even worth the try to push an AT car, unless the car is loaded with a 427 V8 in it or something.. =P

It's just funny to me that while trying to play a game, using MT seems like a task to me, but when driving IRL, using MT is completely natural and pretty much second nature.. heh..

Thanks for the comments.. =)

Wow, that is really weird,

I never would have guessed that. Well, it's MUCH more important to be driving MT IRL than in GT4, so at least you have your priorities straight

i agree with you burnout, but i still feel towards people who could drift with automatics cause that would be alot more skill, keeping the revs up and everything. in real life though i say **** all those ****en hondas out there, the thing that pisses me off is that when people in stall mufflers and its automatic (the sound is so ****ty) and what pisses me off more is when in traffic dammit that just makes me want to take out a gun and shoot the guy who thinks hes all cool. anyways going off topic... but i say mt is alot easier

I feel the same as Skr. In GT4 auto is way better than in real life, it keeps you in the high revs, and has the correct number of gears. I hate trying to do any "spirited" driving in an AT in real life, halfway through a turn you try hitting the gas, then wait a second until the tranny decides to downshift and let you accelerate.
I do see how mt can be alot better, but I don't have the time to reteach myself how to drive in a game with MT. I've been getting better at drifting the volvo wagon with Ten's settings using AT, never thought that would be a good starter car, but its not near as tail happy as some other setups I've seen, easier to control though sometimes i have to yank the ebrake to get it sideways.
