I just grabbed the dvd of the BBC version of the show. It's absolutely hilarious despite the dry humor used. Far better than the American remake. The boss in the UK version is just brilliant. Steve Carell does an alright job on the us version, but it's just not the same.

Any fans of the series?

What is the single most important thing for a company? Is it the building? Is it the stock? Is it the turnover? It’s the people, investment in people. My proudest moment here wasn’t when I increased profits by 17%, or cut expenditure without losing a single member of staff. No. It was a young Greek guy, first job in the country, hardly spoke a word of English, but he came to me and he went ‘Mr. Brent, will you be the Godfather to my child?’.
Didn’t happen in the end. We had to let him go, he was rubbish. He was rubbish!

I rented the original series on the DVD while back. I thought it was alright........ I tried watching the American version, but I couldn't even finish watching one episode. :yuck:

The Office is one of the best programmes to go to air! (The English version obviously, I've never seen the American one.)

The one-liners that come out, and the little "extra" bits that David has to put in make the show for sure. I can't explain what it is, but I laugh even when they have those "scene shots", the ones just of the office area humming along, or the photocopier spitting out paper, even these shots make me laugh.

Slough of all places...

The DVD of the series is great. I haven't seen it personally, but I've heard about it from a friend - the "making of" section is great. Apparently, when they made the first season they didn't have a studio, so they rented the floor of a building and used it - that means people were trying to work above and below them while they made their "mockumentary"! There's heaps of tid-bits like that which are revealed, and the interesting fact that a lot of the humour is adlib and while some may be scripted, the actors just run with it on set and try to keep a straight face.

Ricky Gervais is a comedic genius!

I have Series One and Two on DVD and can heartily recommend them both. Also, the recent 'Xmas Special' is well worth owning as well, with one or two pricelessly brilliant lines (that I cannot repeat here :sly: )...

Before The Office came to TV, I really didn't care for Ricky Gervais at all. And in his subsequent stand-up comedy and his new series (Extras), I've been less than impressed, but The Office is exponentially better than anything else he has done, and atleast equal to anything that has come out of the UK for some time... 👍

I have no intention of watching the US Series, merely because I can't see what they could do that could make it any better.

The US series isn't too bad. It's not as good the Gervais' original though.

Watched the Office so many times, it's just incredibly funny and has a good story line. Brent is possibly one of the most cringe-worthy characters in any tv show though!

“People look at me, they say he’s tough, he was in the army he’s gonna be hard, by the book. But I am caring, and sensitive. Isn’t Schindler’s list a brilliant film?” - Gareth

“I could catch a monkey. If I was starving I could. I’d make poison darts out of the poison of the deadly frogs. One milligram of that poison can kill a monkey. Or a man. Prick yourself and you’d be dead within a day. Or longer. Different frogs, different times.” - Gareth

Whilst the US version isn't as good as the original its still well worth checking out. If you get hung up on the things they have changed you will hate it. If you can look at it as a different show its very good, just in a different way than the UK show.

I am considering renting these because I like the American version and love British comedy. Glad to see everyone likes the BBC version. If I like it I will purchase it.

Slightly off topic, how does British TV work? By that I mean how long, time-wise, is a series? I know that a series is six episodes, but on American TV a season is usually 24 episodes and goes from September through May with some reruns mixed in. I just wonder because when I bought my Red Dwarf DVDs one series cost the same as a season of American TV, but American TV has four times the episodes. Red Dwarf is the only TV DVDs I have bought, so that should tell you how much I enjoy British comedy.
