Don't get me wrong, I love my machine, I really do. I just spent a few hours downloading a little over a gig of Heavenly Sword Demo which menas aout one mnute of its game time to find I have to uy this game although I still have no idea how easy/hard it may e to play. The graphics rock!!! My point is that that downoad took forever, and even my old Dell Ispiron 3200 notebook would have downloaded that 1116MB in just aout 12 mninuteson the DSL over the neraly three hours it took the PS3 to down load it. I would love to take advantage of the other sources of media that its set up for ut jusyt how do you use any of it? I can't find literature ANYWHERE that tells you how to use the vast resources of this machine. Its like hit and miss and spend several hours searching for method to utilize even the simplest of functions. Like reading off a Flashdrive in the game mode. Yeah you can in Video/Music/or Photo mode ut not Game. You have the CF card availale but it only recognizes some of twhat I have saved to that card and every thing on that card has something to do with Playstation. Does it work etter if you install windows? if so can it take Win2000? If so how do you do it and still maintian everything else thats on the HDD? Where can a guy get his hands on some instructions to master the features of this machine? How does the browser work? Where's the cupholder?

On a last note: when I was shopping for mine on eay I kept running across auctions where the sellers were selling their machines ecause they found them confusing or hard to learn . Although I can understand wher these people were coming from I would not sell my machine ecause of that reason. It is frustrating though.:banghead:

You can only install Linux, and when you do you lose everything and it reformats the drive into two partitions. You can make a backup of the current stuff if you want to keep it.

Stupid question, but have you looked at the online manuals?

There are a few features that still bug me, but atleast the system updates are correcting problems and improving the XMB all the time. I use the PS3 alot to listen to music, mostly from my external USB drive (500 GB), and unfortunately the music player is totally not up to the task - yet. Hopefully future system updates will include much greater functionality, which is sadly lacking at the moment. The PS3 certainly isn't perfect yet, but I'm sure that future updates will iron out many shortcomings...

Well, the machine itself is a bit daunting (don't think it will survive the repeated 2 foot drops the PS2 did) and it runs hot as balls, but I guess I haven't played with the peripherals enough to run into any complications. My biggest issue right now is audio output-I really want to use USB 5.1 surround headphones, but apparently the full game sound will not output this way, only team communications and such. Just bought a Midiman CO2 optical/digital converter to give me more options, sound-wise.

Mars, thanks for the link, I was not aware of the online manuals.

I have to say that I find the opposite, the PS3 for me is a relatively easy thing to use. I'm not talking about scratching the surface here as well, I use mine as a media streamer, for video, pictures and audio (which are stored on the internal drive - 160gig upgrade, external drive and on my PC & laptop). I also use it to feed audio to my PSP and play that back through my Hi-Fi in another room in the house.

The on-line manuals are very handy and always remember they can be viewed on the PS3 as well (under the on-line XMB option), I've not personally had any complaints regarding download speed in comparison to the other computers in my house, are all your connected the same way?

I can see that it could be confusing for some people, but that is a comment that could be said about almost any piece of consumer electronics.

Scaff

Your download might have taken long because your connection settings or screwed up, or your wifi is crappy. However, even on "45%" strength from my 1mbps connection, i can do plenty of stuff online without any problems.

I recently got a 60GB version from eBay, and so far I have not had any problems that I could not find a solution to. That said, there are a couple of things that have frustrated me, number one being the avatar for the online profiles. As of right now, the only profile pictures available are the horrendously ugly ones that were included, and there is no way to create and upload your own. Hopefully this will change through updates in the future (home?). Downloads seem to be reasonably fast for me.

My other major issue concerns my equipment, or rather the lack thereof. I am currently having to use my roommate's SDTV, which means that a lot of the text is too small to read, in that it runs together and isn't properly resolved, and without an additional input device (or two) the browser and other functions are a bit cumbersome. But this isn't really a fault of the system as much as it is the fault of my joblessness and college expenses.

I've only ever had slow downloads early on in the systems life. Even on Thursdays my speeds are passable. You can't really blame the hardware for personal experiences.

One reason there is no Flash card option for "Game" is the PSP scene. It is a hack fest on psp allowing easy access to homebrew. Frankly I dont see why its a concern for you or anyone that there's no game option for flash cards. There is no need to back up any games since you can all ways download them again. The system very easy to navigate and very user friendly imo. There isn't much to learn about the system. And there is a manual like someone pointed out.

My experience has been the exact opposite. I find it extremely easy to use. But everyone's different. My dad thinks the Wii remote has too many buttons.

Seriously though, any problems you run into you can ask in the PS3 General Discussion thread, or even search through it, and we will provide answers where we can.

I'm in the Scaff and FK boat. Short of not having enough time to figure out how to get NAT 2 over my wireless, which isn't the PS3's fault, I've had no issues with downloads, connecting to my laptop for media sharing, etc.

Tha manuals were not all that detailed and I figured most of its just goingto e trial and error. Luckily I have CF cards galore eing that I am a photographer si getting media to the music/video/photo, isn't that big of a deal because I use the CFcards. I still haven't een ale to get the PSP to really communicate with the PS3...in fact I can't even get my PC to recognize the PSP to get anything from the PC to the PSP through the mem stick. Thats when I found outthe Flash cards aren't recognized by the Game mode. I figured thAT I would get the downloads to the PSP vi my flash drive usingthe PS3. Not only does the Game mode not recognize the flash drive my PS3 doesn't acknowledge the PSP. This is where I found the lack of literature frustrating. You can tell me the settings are wrong all you want, you'de just e telling me something I've already figured out. I just can't find any literature telling me how to correct this. It is things like this that lead me to say that the PS3 tends to e user unfreindly. I also know that others have felt that way ecause thats how I came to own mine:sly: The original owner couldn't make hide nor hair of it and just gave up. Boxed it up and sold it because he spent more time trying to figure it out thatn actually playing. Personally I have an advantage in that I have the time to deal with it and figure it out. I just have to take care of my kids and the house, being disabled I don't work...for now. While I was searching eslay for mine I rad so many auctions where the sellers were selling for the same reason Ryan sold this one to me. There are somethings I have learned through third party venders ie.how to read the walktrhoughs on the PSP while playing the game etc. Personally I'll proabbaly end up asking questions her and at the Palyastation forums efore its all said and done in order to learn the more intricate functions of the machine.

Personally I really wish I could get the browser to work. Do I need to uy a wirelss mouse to use with my old logitech keyoard for the PS2? Another thing that kind of torqued me last night was trying to download some demos from the Playstation store to the PSP via my PC I couldn't access the dowloads ecause the site kept prompting me for my sign on info. I would enter it and then e told that what I entered was incorrect., the same sign on info I used for the PS3... even while I had downloading demos earlier that day through the PS3 using the very same sign in info (email+password) Yep, a few kinks to work through...

I think that you need to check your email you provided and finish the registration. There should be a link in the email to do so then it should work.

You should not need specifically a wireless peripheral. As far as I know, you can just use anything that is USB compatible. Until a friend of mine with a PSP comes over and we experiment with it, I don't know what to say as far as getting your PS3 to recognize your PSP. I trust that you have already gone through the settings menu for I think they called it "activating" your PSP only to have it not work, right? Is there any chance the same function on both devices must be taken care of beforehand?

I've found the PS3 pretty easy to use. I haven't got a PSP but I've used it as a web browser and a lot for media streaming from my server. I'm surprised other people are having trouble as even my Mrs can use it!

I've seen a lot of people get confused over wireless settings, but no more on the PS3 than on a PC, in fact the PS3 seems slightly easier.

I know, not much help to those who are having problems.........

1) Are you trying to connect wirelessly or via USB?
2) Did you register your PSP with your PS3 in the settings?
2a) Are you using the same PS3 account that you registered the PSP under?
3) Is your PSP in USB Mode?

If you try to copy a PSP game or demo to the PSP from the PS3 it will give you an error saying what you need to do to make it work properly.

Wait, you can do that? I hadn't even tried. And to think I kept pulling up stuff on my PC when trying to figure out the proper resource combinations in Patapon to make the Rarepons.

How do you do this? See, you can teach me something. If it involves custom firmware then I can't do it.

Personally I really wish I could get the browser to work.
What are you trying to do that it won't? I use my browser with just a Sixaxis.

I would double check your information on your PS3 to make sure that is what you think it is, then, as mentioned earlier, check your email to make sure you didn't forget a registration step.

Also, the Playstation Store sign-in page does have a "Forgot Password" link. Just enter your email address and your date of birth (I hope you didn't fake one) and then it should email you your sign-in info or tell you that it doesn't recognize your email address.

It is also quite possible that when you signed up on your PS3 you may have just entered a wrong letter, especially if you were using the Sixaxis instead of a keyboard when you signed up.

PSN ID's are different than PSU ID's if that is what you are trying to figure out.
Edit: ah, the PS store, nvm me...

Sorry I wasn't trying to ignore anyone, I was looking for a distortion pedal/tube preamp for my guitar. Got freakin headache in the process.

Here let me see if I can answer some of this. First thrtee questions:

1---both
2---Yes
3---when I was trying to link via hardwire. notin USB mode when trying to communicate wirelessly.

Apparently the IGN wesite has a way for you to access their guides via your PSP, I haven't been able to try it yet here is the link if yu want to experiment:

http://guides.ign.com/guides/688226/page_6.html

If this works I will also see if I can use it for the guides for my PS3 games. IT would be easier to use the PSP than my laptop for this. Now that I finally have my desktop PC up and running again it is now freed up to use as a wireless guide while I play. This will be handy seeing as how I just bought Warhawk, will be buying Heavenly Sword I don't know if its the graphics, the girl or both but man that game... I am also fianlly going to buy and start playing all the Final Fantasy games. for the Playstation. I have always wanted to so I am going to start pickingthem up one by one off efray.

REally I simnply cannot get it to work. I bring it up and all it does is sit there. I know I am hooked to the internet because I have downloaded demos to the harddrive. I will try again tonight, last night I was checking out RaceDriver Create and Race on the Nintendo DS lite that my wife bought yesterday. She finally treated herself to somehting frivolous. I'm so proud of her, she normally spends money on everyone else except herself. I also had new Wah pedal I got when I went ot the music shop to buy strings. I've always used Morleys and Crybabies but I found a brandnew Weeping Demon for $115 that my wife talked me inot bringing home(Ilet her talk me inot it:sly:) and I had loads of fun with it. Tonight though its back to working with the PS3. I would like to play some games but for some reason I get this feelingthat I have to figure out this new machine before I can dpo that. I gues its a guy thing.

Oh sorry...As for my sign on info for the Playstation site its all cosher. I used my keyboard I have had a playstation keyboard by logitech that I have used for my laptop since before I ever had a playstation. So I have used that for the consoles since I got them. Also you have to enter passwords twice so I know htose are correct. Its kind of a filsafe to keep people from inadvertantly entering the wrong digits when choosing passwords. I also did complete the signup through my email the night I signed up for everything. What has been a bummeris that when I have tried to use the "Forgot Password" link at the sign in page my computer has een hanging so that has ben a big hinderance for me. I did try that several times. I tried earlier today as well and will try again later. So far I have double and triple checked my my data and everything is cosher. The PSP is registered with the PS3, the sign on info is correct. Something somewher just isn't jiving though.

Alright, now I'm in like Flynn. I was fianlly able to get to the online manuals accesable from the PS3 and these are helpful. I kept trying to find something like this via the PC and had no luck, now these are giving me all the information I need. I kept trying to get my 4 digit PIN for the PS3 itself and the one I had entered when I registered the game wasn't working. I have one of three pins I normally use. Evidenatlly it just flatout didn't take because it ended up being 0000 or default. I expressly remember keying in a 4 digit PIN too. Now it looks like I'll get the answeres I have een looking for.

1---both

First off, the PSP does not copy files wirelessly, just Remote Plays. Also, make sure Remote Play is turned on in the settings of the PS3, and you have to make sure you put the PS3 in Remote Play mode for this.

When using USB mode you can transfer files and whatnot and as long as your settings are correct (PSP registered) then it should be a matter of plugging it in to the same cable your controller uses and putting the PSP in USB Mode.

Hmmmm, OK. Now for the obvious questions. Just checking, not thinking you are dumb.

Is your memory stick in the PSP?
Did you format your memory stick on the PSP?

The PS3 reads the PSP like a memory card reader, nothing special, when dealing with media, but you have to register it for DRM gaming and Remote Play purposes and have the memory card formatted to the PSP format.

Although this DRM thing seems to be easily gotten around as when I downloaded the PSP Echochrome demo from the Hong Kong store I had to re-register my PSP under my Hong Kong account and then register back under my US account after I copied the demo over. Honestly, it shouldn't have been that easy, especially as the demo runs on the PSP no matter what account it is registered to. So, I guess I can go to a friend's house who has bought a PS1 game or full PSP game and register to his PS3 to copy the game and then register it back to my PS3 when I get home. It seems too simple.

Anyway, moving on:

Apparently the IGN wesite has a way for you to access their guides via your PSP, I haven't been able to try it yet here is the link if yu want to experiment:

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. Although my Patapon purposes are gone as I figured out the formula (see my Patapon thread in the PSP forums for that).

This will be handy seeing as how I just bought Warhawk,
Mmm fresh meat Welcome to the game. Perhaps I will see you online.

will be buying Heavenly Sword I don't know if its the graphics, the girl or both but man that game...
It's both. Just a warning, I beat the game in under six hours, and it would have been quicker except it took me about five tries to figure out the trick for the final boss fight. Not worth $60 in my opinion, fortunately I borrowed it from a friend. If I find it used for about $15 I will get it because there was some replayability with trying to unlock everything and that after you play through once you unlock Hell Mode.

I am also fianlly going to buy and start playing all the Final Fantasy games. for the Playstation. I have always wanted to so I am going to start pickingthem up one by one off efray.
That may be an expensive route to go, especially if any of them come to the Playstation store for $5.99. Side note: Final Fantasy 1 and 2 are available for PSP.

REally I simnply cannot get it to work. I bring it up and all it does is sit there. I know I am hooked to the internet because I have downloaded demos to the harddrive. Sounds to me like you should just buy Rock Band. :sly:

I think I'm getting it for my birthday.

Tonight though its back to working with the PS3. I would like to play some games but for some reason I get this feelingthat I have to figure out this new machine before I can dpo that. I gues its a guy thing.
And the key to your frustration. Play some games and realize how wonderful your system is and that you just have to figure a couple more things out before it is perfect. It took me a few months before I had everything just right and I still don't utilize everything.

What has been a bummeris that when I have tried to use the "Forgot Password" link at the sign in page my computer has een hanging so that has ben a big hinderance for me. I did try that several times. I tried earlier today as well and will try again later.
Try another computer.

This also makes me think, when you try connecting wirelessly with your PSP (Remote Play), assuming your PS3 is in Remote Play mode, are you trying to log in through the PSN to connect? If that and the online store are both giving you problems I believe that you have something wrong somewhere in knowing which password you used or something.

When doing Remote Play the PS3 will act like a wifi spot and you can log in straight through the PS3 without having to go through the PSN log in process. When you go to connect with your PSP a connections should show up as Playstation 3. If it doesn't search for more connections and then register the PS3 as one. It won't work when you aren't home but it will connect you when you are close so you can make sure the hardware itself is working properly.

Alright, now I'm in like Flynn. I was fianlly able to get to the online manuals accesable from the PS3 and these are helpful. I kept trying to find something like this via the PC and had no luck, now these are giving me all the information I need.

It is the exact same site the PS3 browser connects to.

Now it looks like I'll get the answeres I have been looking for.
The 4-digit PIN it is looking for is the parental controls and security PIN, which should be 0000 unless you changed it manually by going into the parental controls and security settings to do so.

I am not sure what 4-digit PIN (It's been nearly a year since I bought mine and set it up) you may have put in before, but it likely was not this one.

The manuals I read last night on my PS3 are nothing like anything I could find from my computer at the Playstation website. In fact if I had found those I would have not started this thread:sly:I think I figured out why I had such slow download speed last weekend . In fact I might just say I'm impressed that I was able to download anything at all. I checked my Network Settings again and ther was a quite a bit wrong. The IP Address was wrong and ending in a .5 rather than .1 which mine should, and it had my IP address sitting where the Primary DNS Server should have been listed. The machine did this itself also. I initially tried manually entering everything and it would fail to gain a connection veertime. When I let the machine find it itself it connected. I got all that straightened out and finally got it online...sort of. I actually got the browser to do somehting. All it would let me do was go to the Playstation Store ut hey, I was atleast able to do somehting!!👍 I got tot the point where it was so late that I was nodding off while I was trying to get the PSP worked out.

The wife and I have discussed the game RockBand, and like you I am willingto bet that she will go to the trunk of the car and pull it out on my Birthday in May.

Thanks for the heads up on Heavenly Sword. I'll go rent it first. If it provides a bit of a challenge to me I'll find a copy for round $30, if not...I'll wait until the price comes down to around $15 as well. I hate uying games thta I ultimately wish I hadn't.

I found the PS3 to be pretty daunting when I hooked it up for the first time. Coming from the 360 which I felt was stupidly straight forward, the PS3 had a lot more options and stuff to play around with. I still don't think I've messed with all the settings and I'm probably missing out on some stuff but I just don't know what any of it does. I've looked through the manuals, but one of these days I really need to set down with them and go through everything.

My parents found it to be quite technical as well when they got theirs, but all they ever do is play Blu-Ray and DVD movies with it and sometimes play a music CD. I really need to set it up so my mom can access the music off of her computer from it so she doesn't have to burn it to a CD.

For as much stuff the PS3 can do I think it's pretty easy for someone to become overwhelmed with it.

Did you click on Internet Browser or Playstation Store? The browser should be going just to the Sony Playstation page, not the store. Unless they changed the default home page in an update.

If you think that is a case and you want to give her a really big hint it is on sale at Amazon right now.

Yeah, once I heard the length was so short I decided to rent it. But I rent almost every game first since getting Gamefly and almost never buy new.

I think this is the issue that confuses a lot of people is that compared to the Wii and 360, and even past Playstation systems, it has a ton of functionality. Anyone who opens the box and tries to do everything at once will get overwhelmed. It's like going from a type writer to Microsoft Office, in terms of functionality. If you just use Word at first you'll be fine but if you immediately try to use Access and Powerpoint you will get lost.

I got mine, opened it, set it up online, and downloaded GTHD. That was all I had for a week. The most complex thing I did was plug in my DFP. It was a month later that I realized my wireless router was causing issues. From there I would look at one other thing it could do, then another, then another. I didn't even have a PSP until six months later so by the time I was setting that up I had gone through most of the other functionality that I wanted to use and that was all I had to worry about. Well, that and the fact that the Playstation Store now had two systems to lure my wallet in with.

My parents found it to be quite technical as well when they got theirs, but all they ever do is play Blu-Ray and DVD movies with it and sometimes play a music CD. I really need to set it up so my mom can access the music off of her computer from it so she doesn't have to burn it to a CD.
Just setup auto-play and give her a thumb drive. You will both be less stressed in the end.

well for me the PS3 is intuitive and very nice to use. Granted that some things are a little awkward like having the hierarchy of the folder system correct before doing certain stuff with a pen/USB drive but other than that its easy peasy.

Now download speed on the ps3 doses suck big bananas but hay ho it still does a 1gb download in about 30 mins which isn't bad for me. If anything I've found other consoles on the market a lot more counter intuitive and allot lacking in areas where the ps3 shines.

For as much stuff the PS3 can do I think it's pretty easy for someone to become overwhelmed with it.

Thats so very true. And if you start later in the systems life things can get worse for new users just like the PSP did. Many of its features were added well after the launch and it seems Sony is doing the same thing with PS3.

TB
And as far as I'm concerned, keep 'em coming. :D

Same here! I'm extremely glad that we're treated to periodic updates, sometimes that include mundane changes to the interfaces but other times includes cool features such as making the PS3 the first Blu-Ray 2.0 player in the world. (:

*crosses fingers in hope that the Home update is soon*

Yeah the more it does the happier I get!!!! After eing ale to access the manual on the PS3 itself I have had a way easier time of it.

I uy as many games as I can used too Foolkiller. The few I have that are brandnew I got at used prices...I pinch pennies til they screeeeeaaaaam. Then I pinch some more. Even with Heavenlt Sword being so short I reead on its thread that they will be making more so lets see if Nariko becomes the next icon.

One thing that is bothering the heck out of me is our PSP. I cannot for the life of me get it to acces the internet. Neither though the PS3 or directly though the router itself. I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that I have all that info right. Heck I have had to reinstall windows on the compuetrs enough that I know that info is right. I can't even get it to run though the routere when I input all the info myself.

----------------add on------------------------

It is now 4:21 AM my time( I stay up late) and still have not een ale to get the PSP to connect to the internet. This I don't mind saying is getting a bit annoying.

If you buy a lot of games I suggest Gamefly. I have a new copy of Super Smash Brothers Brawl (shipped the day it came out) that I saved $16 on through their Keep It program. That covered my subscription fee so anything else I buy is pure savings.

OK, one question: Is the WiFi switch on? On the top of the PSP to the left is a switch for turning the WiFi receiever on and off.

If it is On have you ever gotten it to connect online before? Is it new? You may have a bad WiFi receiver.

Yes the WLAN switch is in the on position. NO I've never een ale to actually communicate with my PS3 with it. Funny, We ought the PSP for my daughter and my wife bought a DS Lite for herself and the PS3 mainly for me because I play a lot of racing games, and I wanted to be able to keep up witht he new simulators that are destined to come out now as a result of the PS3. She is interested in playing some of the hero based RPG and fighting games such as HEavenly Sword and Oblivion but even she will eb the first to admit that she wouod rather play games like that on the PSP.

I wish I had known that Final Fantasy origins was available for the PSP because I had already bought the PS version. I' guess I'll havce to find a cheap copy ofthe PSP version for her. When you mentioned how expensive buying all the games could get I had alreayd dtarted buying games, but I do buy things at the very cheapest prices I can get them an so far have done pretty well. Even shopping frugally I may be looking at a couple hundred bfroghides worht of games though:crazy::nervous:

When you say problem with the Wifi receiver, does that mean internally on the PSP itself?

If you cannot get it to connect to anything wirelessly then possibly, yes.

Does it even detect your wireless router?

And of course, have you upgraded your system firmware through direct Internet connection. If it can do those things then it is more likely something you are doing, and not watching you do it I cannot say what.

You have set it up to connect to your router and your router security settings are setup to detect it, etc, etc?

For PS3 the PS3 must be in Remote play for a wireless connection and then you must go through Remote Play on your PSP.

For any USB connection the PSP must be in USB Mode.

I don't know what else to tell you. Without being there personally and watching what you are doing I have no clue what the problem could be. I have the same issue with my dad and his iPod. I walk him through connecting it to his PC over the phone and it doesn't work. I go over to his house and do it myself and it works. He does it while I watch him and it works. As soon as I leave it quits working.
