I've got a broken toe on my right foot. Nailed the side of the toilet with it real good. Then, just before bed on the same day, I jammed it hard into a case of White Flyer brand of all orange clay birds that was half filled with 12ga shotgun ammo. Ouch, to say the least. I broke it, for sure.

Right now, the toe is half sideways, and the entire toe is black. Yes, black. It also kills me to walk on it. The nail is starting to peal completely off. Yes, ouch, again.

I don't want to go to the hospital, because I know they'll charge us ridiculous amounts of money, my guess is $15,000, for them just to X-ray it and give me an over-sized slipper to wear. Not gonna do it.

So, how long should I expect until the pain goes away and for it to heal?

i went to a doctor and they didnt do anything but xray and tape the big toe to the one next to it. the big nail eventually fell off and then grew back. it sounds like yours is broken more severly than mines... it still doesnt feel 100%, and i broke it about 6 years ago.

I suggest you go see a doctor. Unless you fancy a badly set bone leading to pain for the rest of your life.

I've had a few mates with broken toes, usually very tender for a looong time, good 6 months.

Yeah, I figured on tapping it, too. But, it's too painful to touch it right now. I'm waiting for the nail to fall off to do anything with it now, anyway.

I've broken my foot playing football which was painful, but never my toe.

What, no insurance? Ouch. Just go to the hospital. Its not that big of a deal. you'll pay for it somehow.

No, I've got that, but I know they'll charge some ridiculous amount, and the insurance company will probably not pay it, blah, blah, blah.

I'm still not going, though. Screw it. I'll ride it out. I'm sure I'll be fine for my Christmas day hunt. If not, big deal, 'cause I'll be sitting in a goose blind all day.

About five years ago, I got up in the middle of the night and stumbled down the hallway. In so doing, I kicked the vacuum cleaner (always put the vacuum away after you use it, kids). A few hours later, my wife (ER nurse) came home from work, looked at it, confirmed that it was broken, or at least fractured, and said that there was nothing they could have done for me if I had come in anyway. Of course, this is the same person who said I didn't need stitches after I busted open my chin playing soccer/football, so take that for what it's worth.

you need to get better insurance :p

Hey, I'm in SoCal. Medical costs are super, super high here thanks to the mexicans never paying their bills. Those that can pay, pay for them. It's business as usual, from all insurance companies. Deny covering it, until you threaten to sue. Well, that's what happened last time. Then, you end up doing what I'm doing right now; not going to the hospital.

To be honest, I don't see how an over-sized slipper is really gonna help much. An old high school friend broke his toe and he wore the thing for only three-four days.

Dude, as a general rule, if you break a part of yourself, seek medical attention regardless of cost.
Perhaps you could ask if they would afford you free advice?

The thing is, they are professionals. They know how to set a fracture. Just go and get it overwith. It wont cost that much.

EDIT: My. Sentences. Are. Short. :D.

My brother-in-law got a one inch wide, but deep, cut stitched up at an emergency room hospital. He waited 90 minutes and was seen and released in just ten minutes. Cost him $5,700. No insurance. Medical costs are enormous in this state, dude.

I thought I'd broken my 1st metatarsal, but an X-ray showed nothing, so they guessed at a ruptured ligament. When asked to guess a healing time, they ventured "When it's healed."

Which turned out to be 9 months.

It's not always nessicary, often with a broken toe or finger all they will do is strap it to the one next to it, or a splint and tell you to not knock it or move try to bend it for a while. When I broke my foot I didn't actually know I'd broken it until 2 weeks after, the week after I broke it I was playing football and it just started to really hurt when I kicked the ball so I had it chacked and x-rayed a week later and all that happened was they said, yep it's broken, try to rest it as much as you can. Fortunately that didn't cost me a penny, it would seem I have better insurance than Solid Lifters ;).

Oh. My. Pants.

Thanks, Famine. 👍

The thing is, you don't want it healing sideways, because it will screw up your gait permanently. Wrap a towel around a broom handle, bite down on it, and have your wife pull it over straight. Then tape it to the adjacent toe and keep taking painkillers.

Yep, I see this down the road for me, but just not right now. I'm waiting, like a sissy, for the toenail to rip off. Cannot do it myself. Way to tender, and this type of pain has always freaked me out. Punches, bites, claws, stabs, gunshots, stones, sticks, and bats; not a problem. A knife to the bellybutton, or a finger and toenail ripped off, bleh. :yuck:

Thanks for the input, Duke. 👍

I would ask for pics but let's not go there, a lollipop stick makes a good splint to put by the side of the toe when you tape it up. 👍 Just make sure no-one stands on it, if they do, open a can of whoop-ass on them. :)

You could always drive to Mexico and get a doctor to fix you up for a buck. :D

Nevada, perhaps?

My dad was diagnosed with a torn quadracept, so gave it the full muscle treatment works. 6 months later, no better, and could hardly walk. Abit more prodding, abit more umming and arhing later...

...Diagnosis, sciatica.

Gotta love the NHS.

Actually, we have them here in Pomona, Ontario area. Not licensed, not real doctors and they're shut down all the time when the law finds them. They'll do anything for a couple of bucks. But, they only serve mexicans.

Then paint yourself brown and learn Spanish.

Sorry to hear about your toe BTW.

Come down to Australia and get it fixed for free...

An Airfare is probably cheaper then $15,000.

Canada's closer. :sly:

But, I'd prefer Japan. I've always wanted to visit there. Though, Australia ain't bad, since a lot of GTPers live there and the weather is hot right now.

I have broken my toe once. Thanksgiving about 7 or 8 years ago, i dropped about a 5 pound weight on it from about 5 feet high. Unpleasant is an understatement. It was skinned and the nail had to be taken off. Also the put a hole in it to drain all the blood stuck in it. In the end all the did was put gauze on it!!!!! Being 7 or 8 it was not a fun moment.:grumpy:

I also broken a few fingers in the past and I never went to the hospital. I just pulled them out so they could reset themselves. My dad told me the hospital couldnt do much for them anyway.

Besides these time Ive been to the hospital numerous times in my short life, mainly because Im a dumb***.(to name a few-knocked out, numerous stitches, and putting a staple through my thumb)

This thread is worthless without pics....Anyways, I would strongly suggest going to the doctor. Sure it will heal if you leave it alone, but having it heal the wrong way can lead to bigger consequences. Having a broken toe heal the wrong way can probably make a simple task like walking in tight shoes incredibly painful. Man, that sucks having to pay for medical bills. Thank god healthcare is free here in Canada, although waiting for 2 hours or more is payment to them I guess.

The wait varies by hospital and severity. And we pay for our healthcare from general tax revenues, primarily income tax, it's not really 'free'. ;)

I'd recommend to set your toe sooner rather than later. It's going to hurt like mad either way, better to just get it over with, IMO
