Anybody ever get S-7 & S-8 gold with an automatic?

The first time I played GT3 two summers ago, I got mostly bronzes, and I always used an automatic. I just think shifting with the DS2 controller is a bit awkward. I got the B License gold, but B-8 was so hard that I didn't bother trying to get any more golds. S-8 took me awhile just to get bronze, because I had never used partial-accelerator or partial-brake. After I learned accelerator control, though, it was pretty easy to pass S-8 with an automatic.

So, after I got 100%, this summer I erased my game and started over. I got gold on all the license tests except S-7 and S-8 using an automatic. Even using accelerator control, I just couldn't match the demo in S-7. I decided I would try a manual transmission instead. I hadn't even used a manual before (except briefly 2 years ago just to see what it was like), but I got silver my first run on S-7.

I try not to exaggerate about how good I am (like some people). It took me at least 2 hours to get gold on each of B-8 and a couple of the S License tests. But S-7 and S-8 are so easy with a manual, because it magically eliminates wheel spin. Without ever running a single race with a manual, it took me less than an hour to learn how to drive a manual and get gold on S-7 and S-8.

So, now that I've given my entire personal history, I was just wondering how many people had managed to get gold using an automatic in those tests. If you look at the demo, the gold times for all tests were achieved using an automatic transmission and without analog control. I couldn't even get silver on S-7 with an automatic, and there's no way I could've done it using full-accelerator and full-brake like the demo does.

Also, does anybody else think it's just a little dumb how easy those tests are with a manual? Like, maybe you shouldn't be able to sit there in a 1000 HP GT-One cooking the clutch in 3rd gear so the tires don't spin?

Several drivers I know are automatic-guys, and at least one of them is right up there with the best there is - O.Z. I know of a few other drivers who passed all-gold licences with AT - including Red Eye Racer who frequents this forum.

Try http://www.gt3times.com/view/ - select licences, then pick your parameters. Auto/Manual is one of the categories.

Actually, don't :D

I think the 1st place time for the N. American S-8 is a lie. My best time is 1:26:707 and I have saved the demo for it. But my record time only goes to 1:27:857 as the best time. The game never acknowledges times better than a certain time limit I guess. Does anybody know for sure? I just got a time of 1:27:206 and it wouldn't save it for the records.

BTW, I do all my racing with the automatic and a DS2 and the gold time for the S-8 is 1:31:000 not 1:30:000.

To address the second bit first - my game once bugged on me and stopped the licence test halfway through. I got credited with a gold in a time of 45s for a 1'30 test. There is no lower limit.

And the first point.... I can only laugh. To call Link a liar is just too amusing for words. If you want, I can get him to send you a replay.

Cute... Now, I wonder if your PS2 would've exploded if you tried to save the replay or use it for a ghost...

Nope. No need. It wasn't suppose to make you laugh, but you Brits and your corky humor. I just stated that to start a discussion how times are proven. Looks like nobody is game.:D

Me too. I've switched to MT all the time now though, so I could probably do alot better now.:D
