Anybody found a trick or the way to drift yet?

I've seen videos on youtube of people drifting and for the love of god...I just can't do it. I'm playing with a wheel by the way...

The only thing I found that partially worked was to start a drift simply by applying more gas and then completly put the steering wheel on the opposite side and control the throttle. It works for like 1 or 2 seconds, then I lose it.

It looks as though you have to not listen to the Vaughn tricks where he says to go smooth...the only it worked for me was to yank the wheel...

I haven't tried with the controller yet, but still.

Anybody found something with the wheel that seems to, at least, partially work?

I would imagine input lag would make it impossible.

Try to anticipate when you will need to adjust your steering and do it half a second before you need to.

I couldn't cope if I had to do that.

Good luck. Use the force.

I haven't tried a wheel, but with the controller at least, it seems that you don't even need to countersteer otherwise you'll just fly off into a wall.
I also had to search to change my car to MT. That seemed to help a lot more.

The drifting in this game is by far the hardest I've played in any game.

"let go of your feelings Luke"

"Luke ..... You've turned off your telemetry".

" I'm alright......"

Its funny I read on Speedhunters that they haven't change the physics between drifting and racing which is massive crock of ****!

Honestly I have my thing set to Elite...which means I know what I am doing let me drift like I would in real life....holding a car sideways in real life is a lot easier than shift!

But hey at least the racing is fun.

1. Use a controller
2. Use stock settings
3. Use a powerful car(ex. Supra with V10 swap = 1000+ hp)
4. Drift/practice on London Millenium

It's hard to drift underpowered cars in the game for me. The Supra has enough power to hold all the longer drifts and nimble enough to go through sharp corners. If the corner is really wide, use nitrous. I wouldn't recommend using it but you will have to eventually at some point, especially when you mess up on the first corner of London Millenium.

I've managed to get a score of 1275 for one lap on London Millenium.

I've tried drifting tonight with the controller and the Sylvia they give you for completing the tutorial.

Man! What a difference! I've breezed through a lot of events with that car no problem.

So I'm gonna use the wheel to play road course and the controller to play drifting...no big deal for me.

Anyway, I found drifting with the controller pretty fun once you get the hang of it!

Have you drifted on GT5, and if so, can you comment on the difference?

Anyone else with answers, it would be great to hear those as well :sly::dopey::scared::nervous::ouch:

mytton: I just completed the drift tutorial (3 lessons) yesterday night.

The difference between GT5 drifting and shift 2 seems to be that is more sensitive. so you should have smaller wheel inputs and way less throttle. You are sliding even if the wheels are not squeaking.

After the tutorial, you unlock the drifters playground. just drive around there and enjoy yourself.

I've drifted in both. Where GT is much more of a simulation and requires near-constant variation of throttle and steering angle to maintain a drift, Shift has a much larger pre-programmed "sweet spot" in which it will allow you drift for days. Just keep trying various throttle/steering angle combinations until you find it in all the usable gears and you'll be golden. The open drift courses in the game are an ideal place to practice this.

how on the earth do i turn off so the driver doesnt turn when it drifts for me?
im on elite settings and it still steers by itself!!

this is rediculous!
in drift mode the driver will automaticly steer by himself no matter what settings you have.
thank god i didnt buy this game witch apperantly was designed for kids playing black ops!

Jeah its IMPOSEBALE! using wheel to and its soooo hard and not fun!

First thing to learn is easy; initiating the slide. Just drive the course like normal, feeding more throttle in and turning harder as you go. It won't take you long to get the hang of breaking traction at will.

After that, you'll begin to notice that each corner has a combination to unlocking a drift. For instance, say there are three corners in a row; corner one is 30% opposite lock and 70% throttle in 4th gear, corner two is 40% opposite lock and 60% throttle in 3rd gear, corner three is 25% opposite lock and 50% throttle in second gear. Just find the sweet spot, it's huge in this game, and once you do just keep her steady w/ the tiniest of modulations.

When you've done that, all that's left is keeping 'er headed in the right direction between turns.

With a controller, drifting is easy.

But that doesn't mean its fun.

No matter what settings you use, if you are using a controller, whenever you turn, even if its a small turn to make a correction when on a straight line, some kind of steering assist will auto-put the car into a drift, which mean you will usually end in the wall since with the input lag, you compensate but by the time the car turns respond, its too late.

Although if you drift during a corner, the steering assist that can't be turned off will pretty much hold the drift indefinitely, requiring only small corrections to the angle of the drift.

Spent about 2 hours trying to drift with my G27 on that stupid circle and figure 8 track. Could barely break the 200 point mark without my tyres popping.

Got extremely fed up with the stupid game (its clearly the game and not me :P) and started to use my controller.

Controller is stupidly easy. Got through the three practices (circle, figure 8, slalom) really easily.

Tried the first event, got 500 points (first place) on my very first attempt. All you do is flick the car sideways, hold the throttle down and rotate wheel full lock from one side to the other.

Yeah that was so annoying. If you spin out then accelerate in a straight line to get your speed back up, any slight movement of the car will force it to go sideways.

Trying to drift using a wheel in this game is nearly impossible, its a horrible game mode made worse by the input lag. I also don't understand why you need 2 completely different physics modes/models for racing and drifting, if the car and setup is right then that should be enough.

Drifting in GT5 is easy! Once traction breaks lose there is still feedback through the steering wheel which allows you to add more or less throttle/more or less angle. With Shift 2 as soon as traction is lost there is no feedback whats so ever so you have no idea on where to shift the weight. In real life you rely on your arse to tell you what the car is doing...in a game you only have what ever feedback you are getting through the wheel.

I also don't agree with having different physics for both drifting and normal racing.....when in real life there is no different physics just different suspension setups!

Finally got through all the drifting events and got the Mustang. Used the gift S13 drifter for the most part but the car is underpowered for the harder events. Then I remembered an old friend from Shift 1 -- the BMW M3 E36. Did a light tune up and it broke 900 points per lap in London easily. Also thanks to whoever recommended the Supra -- couldn't get anywhere close to the podium in the final event in Miami with any other car, but the Supra got me there with a stupid amount of power.

Now I'll never touch drift mode again.

Try it on the normal grip mode, it seems to work with about 400bhp+ and stock tyres with the right tuning...
Theres some horrendous snapback though :(
