Anyone finding the online experience inferior to GTS?

So, I've been doing this for a few hours today and as is the GT7 model, it's as I feared; the public online experience is a poor second best to GTS.

This is because of several reasons specific to the design of GT7;

- A larger majority of players are now of course playing through the story mode collecting cars and this has decimated the number of lobbies. They are running at about half GTS capacity from what I can see.

- if you want a full set of tyres to use in a public lobby you need to buy them first, meaning to start with at least, you have to do single player stuff to win money to buy all the tyres.. for each car.

- The PP system appears to override car class, meaning you find many lobbies that have a non-class car beasting round several seconds faster than anyone else. E.g. I just came out of a GR4 lobby where someone had that Alfa 155 touring car, which is legal and lapping 5s faster than I could go.

- or there is a race class but tuning is now an option, so there are more lobbies with tuning on and souped up cars, reducing the number of proper/fair/balanced race lobbies.

- mistakes are now much more common and this appears to have dramatically increased rage quitting. E.g. I won one 5 lap race that started with 14 players and because I was not making mistakes, I was the only one left in the race by lap 3!

- PP ranged lobbies take aaaages messing in car setup to actually get a car legal and competitive, by removing mods... by which time the host has started the race.

- and PP ranged lobbies are worse if you mess around and find you need to buy mods... which means leaving the lobby.

I could go on all night. I knew this would be the case because of the way GT7 has more single player elements but nevertheless the online experience has diminished, depopulated, become laborious and frustrating. I fancied a random online race and I would've been far more successful starting GTS. The future of gaming is online not offline.

If a lobby is set to "gr4" then it should just be current/modern gt4 cars and tyres at least should be free and maybe mods too.

To be fair, the Alfa Touring car is Gr.4 in the game.

However, I agree with lobbies being inferior in it's current state.

Haven't really played them much though, but most baffling is that they have removed the qualifier option that was in GTS, and you can no longer use a keyboard for replays and othe broadcasty stuff like in GTS.

Also .. still no penalty zones 😣

Lobby features are on PD's list of stuff for future updates, really hoping they ramp up the lobbies. So much potential, so much to gain 🤞🏻

How do you change the track in a online lobby. ?? Anyone who can help will be appreciated.
It's a current issue. You have to set up a new lobby. Yes this means everyone you had collected in your lobby now gets booted out.

I'm surprised how little thought appears to have gone into the online experience. At a guess I'd say it's because the Devs don't actually know what the online experience was like on GTS.

Hopefully in time they'll subdivide Gr4 into a 90s version, maybe with Mercedes 190E, Audi V8 Quattro, Opel Calibra. It doesn't feel right with the Alfa Romeo in there imo.

I agree the new Sport mode doesn't gel with me at all. But we shall see what they do with it

Im frustrated with the Sport mode too. Polyphony spent the last 5 years funneling players into online competition and now it’s chaos in sport mode. Tuning + sport hard tires is such a bad combination.

Really not liking the grinding in single player to advance in sport. This is looking dismal.

I wouldn't write it off just yet, PD proved themselves to be assiduous when it comes to post-launch updates with GTS -- some of which were pretty damn big changes.

They screwed up the GrA class in PC2. They had 3 cars evenly matched then they added a skyline that was not a same era group A car and it was OP. So then everyone started using that and it became the skyline class. The alfa 155 looks like it will do the same in GT7 for the Gr4's - it will become the 155 class for public lobbies. In one ill thought out move, all gt4 cars will be effectively removed from the game and largely end up being private league only.

And I wonder, is the alfa always going to be the meta car for all the gr4 daily races? That's going to get real boring real quick.

Yeah they should add more daily races. Maybe daily D should be modded cars only races? For those who hate modded cars on SH, they haven't added races to sport mode, they've take a race away.

They should have at least on daily race where everyone has the same setup, and modding is not allowed. Like an arcade user friendly lobby, where everything is already set up. Also make one lobby a same car lobby, with same cars and same setups. (Like a one make race).

And for the people who like to modify the cars, one lobby can have no limit on setups, mods etc...

I also hope they fix the rear wheel traction sensitivity on RWD cars with a future patch. I dont know if its the physics programming, the steering, or both.

If Manufacturers Series doesn't have BoP I am going to be very disappointed. Open setup is fine by me. We'll be using the same two cars for a year. But tuning, please please, just...no.

In my experience thus far, online sucks ass big time. I've got many complains and hardly anything I can say I actually like about it.

What I like:
  • Yay online multiplayer is back..
  • I like competition online
  • It looks like GT: Sport did so easy transition
  • Oooh shiny!

What I don't like:
- Polyphony Digital couldn't even match the quality of GT: Sport
  • Can't transfer lobby ownership to another person in the room so if host leaves the lobby is dead and people don't come back.
  • Can't change event settings in-game and instead you have to kick everyone out, make a new room with new settings, and even then you lose people because they don't come back.
  • Lobby limit still 16 (shame)
  • Can't buy parts in a room; have to back out, go all the way back to the world map, then load back into the multiplayer lobby and hope the room is still there.
  • Too many variations between Gr. 1, Gr. 2, Gr. 3, and Gr. 4 cars so there's no way to set a room up to specify only grouped "race cars". In Gran Turismo 6, and even GT: Sport, cars from certain groupings all had equal (or close to it) specs making it easy to set limits and specify certain cars by weight or horsepower (Nascar stock cars for instance). GT: Sport actually handled this better and all Gr. * cars were just race cars and not road cars.
  • Terrible synchronization of racers leading to pinballing cars and overall bad race experience
  • Rain is a complete joke no matter what tires you're on
  • Sport mode races are terribly balanced. You get maybe one or two good players and everyone else finishes 30sec+ behind leader
  • Not all contact in sport mode incurs penalties and some of the penalties are absolute whack. I've noticed that some people have figured out how to push other cars off track without being penalized. I've lost four races so far because of this. I'VE also been penalized because someone brake-checked me and it counted as me "Making Contact" with another vehicle in the race...

How long do you think GT: Sport has before they close down those servers like they did to Gran Turismo 6? This sh** is getting to the point where I think I might just go back to GT: Sport... I'll say one thing, though- this is the last Gran Turismo game I'm ever buying. It's a damn shame but they brought this on themselves. After 24 years I'm finally saying goodbye. Maybe you can work on yourself, PD, and there'll be a chance for "us" in the future. Maybe...

[1&2] I agree with these. There should be no modding allowed in the sport mode races, and if there is then separate them into two different race events- Modded event & No mods

[3] The problem is that you get full throttle response at half pressure. It feels much worse on controller and made getting my licenses a FREAKING nightmare.

I agree with everything you wrote. You should send this in email form to polyphony digital, lets hope someone there reads it and actually uses it for a future patch.

I totally would except Polyphony Digital has no direct line of communication available.

The only thing I could find here (https://www.polyphony.co.jp/contact/) is an email for "Inquiries regarding recruitment" and here (https://www.gran-turismo.com/us/) there's nothing but social media links.. It's almost like they don't want to hear what their players have to say.....

Id like to see two races with GR2/3/4 and BoP and two races with PP limits for modified cars. It's pretty clear that a lot of people want a quick and easy race car experience like in GT Sport.
I like the new sport mode and can't be the only one, but I just wish they'd use PP rather an BHP/Weight limit.

Yeah the lobbies aren't great. But I really think it won't be long before they fix some issues.

What I don't understand is everyone comparing this to Sport. Sport is not a mainline GT game; this is. Sport is essentially a spin off. This is much more like GT 1-6. As it should be

I am not sure how it got such high reviews in this state. Genuinely shocked GTPlanet gives the MP a 5/5...
I couldn't believe anyone would give the online multiplayer in this state 5 stars so I went back and looked it up. And you're right. What the..? It's completely broken at the moment.

Because we have no choice. GTD is already thin and will be shut down soon enough so we are left with this. The game is big and broad enough to encompass sport, it's not a resources issue, it's an implementation issue.

I think Sport fans will get their wish soon enough. For fans like myself, and basically every Gran Turismo fan I know (in real life), this is the game we've waited for for 8 years. Sport did nothing for me, and I've played every GT game. I'm glad a lot liked Sport. But at least those fans don't need to wait 8 years. Possibly only 8 days

That's PD for ya. Don't know if it's Kaz's boneheadedness or whatever, but it's been a pain watching them pour effort into the form over function things, while ignoring things that actually make for a better experience.

I really don't care about how pretty and classy your menu and menu music is. If you're going to force me through them every time i need to make a small change they'll just become annoying.

Why has the online system regressed since the last 2 mainline entries? Why do we have to wait for updates to implement what were considered basic features in mainline GT games released over a decade ago?

Stop trying to force everyone to play pokemon with cars. The AI is brain dead and has been for 25 years. Let people who just want to race against other humans do so without needing to jump through silly hoops.

I'm surprised they aren't forcing your to play Steering Wheel Hero before every online session, but let's not give them any ideas.

I haven't driven the Alfa yet so I can't speak to how fast it is / isn't in comparison to other cars in class; but there is this magical thing called "BoP" that will certainly be applied to Group 4 daily races that should bring the cars roughly in line with each other.

woo things are seriously this bad. I just commented in the car list thread then just saw this one.
How most reviewers give this game a 9 is beyond me.

Out of curiosity, are lobbies with sports car decently populated or it’s just the desert like gt sport with only the usual lobbies with gr cars?

Sport mode is in desperate need of BoP. Setups and tuning off for equal and good racing. I’m fairly confident this will be seen to in a not too distant future because as it stands right now, Sport mode is leagues inferior to GT Sport.

Add a daily D and at least give a 50/50 split between BoP/tuning or preferably 3/4 (or 2/3 if the amount remains unchanged).

Yes, online has been a disappointment, even with my wheel and pedal set up, but single player on PS5 has been a pleasant surprise due primarily to the controller, which is a game changer. Sport mode is hit and miss right now, the open setups reward the folks who take the time to game the system and the penalties are all over the place.
