I need to learn how to play.

I know the basic hands and pretty much what beats what (though I don't know all of the technicalities). I'll be playing with money, so I need to know how that works exactly.

Most of all I need to know the technique.

Anyone want to help out?

I don't. But PM me your email address and I'll give it to my buddy. He's big into it, and he's hosted a tournament, etc. He can set you up I bet.

Would love to, but for some reason I don't think technique wins in poker. Eyes, hands, stealth, face and gut feeling wins I think...

Let's start with betting. How does betting work?

Also, how many members of a straight do you have to have before it's worth it to try to get it when asking for more cards?

When should you ditch 4 cards and what does that signal to the other players?

Betting – When you first receive your cards (face down), you put in an opening bet. Then everybody looks at their cards, and places another bet. Then once you do your replacement stuff and get your new hand, you put in a final bet. (All of this is how my dad taught me, so anybody correct me if I'm wrong).

When you bet, you can "raise" somebody... they have to either meet that raise, or fold. Be careful about raising though... if you raise too much, people will know you have a really good hand, and will fold before you can squeeze more money out of them. ;)

So you place your first bet before even looking at your cards?

Is that the same thing as ante?

When does the first round stop? Can you raise someone in the first round of betting (before looking at your cards)?

When does the second round stop?

Well, if you plan to play poker, you have to speak the lingo. It will be a huge task to get all of it down, but here is a list for you to look over.

I only play Texas Hold'em, so I don't think I can be of much help. Are you going to play TH? You get two cards. Then, the dealer places five community cards, cards that can be played by all players, face down. Then, you get the FLOP. The dealer turns over the first three community cards, and paly them with your two hole cards. Then bets are placed, or skipped (CHECK). Then, the TURN card gets flippen over, and bets are placed again. Then, the final RIVER card gets turned over, and the betting continues. You get to use any of the five cards, or two, or just one of your hole cards. It's a lot more fun to play then boring old 5 card stud.

Yes and yes.

When does the first round stop?
What do you mean by "round"? Do you mean after everyone has traded their cards away?

Can you raise someone in the first round of betting (before looking at your cards)?
I honestly don't know... I don't see why not (though it'd be rather silly, since you haven't seen your cards yet! ;))

I haven't got a clue. All I know is that there are no wild cards.
 Sorry, don't mean to have a laugh at your expense, but... ;)

You might want to find out if you are playing something like TH, since that's quite a different game. However, my bet is that you're going to be playing 5-card draw, since that's what most people refer to as "poker".

By round I mean everyone has put in their ante.
Ah, okay... well, let's put it this way – You never do anything more than once. For example, once everybody has anted, that's it – you don't get a chance to ante again. When everybody trades in their cards for new ones, that's it – you don't get to do another trade. Here's a quick synopsis of what happens:

5 cards to each person passed out, face down
Each person puts in an ante (bet)
Everybody looks at their cards now
Each person puts in a bet
Everybody chooses which cards to get rid of, and gives them to the dealer
Dealer gives you "new" cards
Once everybody gets new cards, everybody bets again
Show cards!

And remember that during each bet, you have to put in at least as much as everybody else, else you wish to fold (which you're allowed to do at any time).

Depending on the people you're playing with, if you want to get rid of 4 cards, they might ask you to see the card that you're keeping. Just depends on the rules of whoever you're with.

You have to get rid of at least one card, and no more than 4.

You should ditch 4 cards when you have a s***y hand, which means that you don't even have a pair.

i like to play hold em. you should learn the hands.

a pair is the weakest hand you can have
two pair is the next highest up.
three of a kind is the next.
then a straight. thats 5 cards in sequence. ex. 2345 but a higher straight can beat that. ex. 10, jack, queen, king, ace.
then a flush. 5 cards of the same suit. diamonds, hearts, spade, or clubs.
The you have a full house. three of a kind with a pair.
then four of a kind.
Then a straight flush. 5 sequence cards of the same suit.
then a royal flush. 10, j, q, k, a. all of the same suit

I'm getting there guys, thanks for the help.

So can someone tell me how hold 'em works? Solid got me started but I still don't quite get it.

Start me off with the first cards dealt and everything. When do I bet, how much, that kind of thing. Include bring-ins and blinds if you know what those are.

I appreciate it.

Get a crappy strip poker game - they aren't expensive and teach you the basics... I'm not exactly in the know either, but I can get those chicks naked quick-sharp...

Sage put it exactly I as understand it - although I don't get why you can Call someone and they don't show their cards, but you can also Call someone and they do... :D

The betting structure can vary, but most games start with two players placing out a predetermined amount of money so there is an initial amount to play for. This is called posting the blinds. These players are the two to the left of the dealer.

2. The dealer shuffles up a complete deck of 52 playing cards.

3. Each player is dealt two cards face down. These are called your hole or pocket cards.

4. Then there is a round of betting starting with the guy to the left of the two who posted the blinds. This round is usually referred to by the term pre-flop.

5. The amount betted depends on what kind of game it is. (Click here for more information about betting structures)

6. Much like most games of poker, players can check, raise, or fold.

7. After the betting round ends, the dealer discards the top card of the deck. This is called a burn card. This is done to prevent cheating.

8. The dealer then flips the next three cards face up on the table. These cards are called the flop. These are communal cards that anyone can use in combination with their two pocket cards to form a poker hand.

9. There is another round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer.

10. After the betting concludes, the dealer burns another card and flips one more onto the table. This is called the turn card. Players can use this sixth card now to form a five card poker hand.

11. The player to the left of the dealer begins another round of betting. In many types of games, this is where the bet size doubles.

12. Finally, the dealer burns a card and places a final card face up on the table. This is called the river. Players can now use any of the five cards on the table or the two cards in their pocket to form a five card poker hand.

13. There is one final round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer.

14. After that, all of the players remaining in the game begin to reveal their hands. This begins with the player to the left of the last player to call. It's called the showdown.

15. The player who shows the best hand wins! There are cases where players with equal hands share the winnings. Click here for more info on who wins and about split pots.

It's difficult to learn to play Texas Hold 'Em in the traditional setting of a casino's poker room without losing to experienced gamblers. Thankfully, you can practice all you want for free with online poker rooms.

This was taken from the web site link I gave you earlier. It should all be there for you. It takes a while to learn, but it's worth it!

I'm sure you can :trouble:

Thanks solid. I checked out that website, but somehow I didn't see all that - it is exactly what I was looking for!

I think now I understand how to play texas hold 'em and 5 card stud. I'll look up 7 card stud but I'm assuming it's the same as 5 card but with two cards face up or something like that.

Anyway, I appreciate it solid. Do you want to share some of the more intricate technique behind not losing money in texas hold 'em? I'm pretty sure I've got the basics to understand what you're talking about.

Edit: Ok now I see it. It was the beginner's intro link... I'm blind. I'll check out the strategy portions of that site, but feel free to contribute your own expertise. :)

Practice expression bluffing. That is, make a certain face or movement when you get a great hand, or a lousy one. Players that like to read body movement usually pick up on it, and place their bets accordingly. Then, reverse them towards the end of the game. You'll be surprised how often someone goes all in when they've read one of your bluffs.

But, you should probably stick to a good poker face. I always wear shades so others can't see my eyes. But, casinos usually make you take them off, so don't get to use them on. It takes a lot of self control not to make many involuntary movements, but if a fidgity guy like me can do it, so can you. If you can't do that, practice doing lots of movement to throw off the other players, but that comes in with expression bluffing. Oh, and NEVER SAY A FRICK'EN WORD! If someone tries to talk to you, just ignore them. They'll start to talk to someone else. Remember, you're there to win money, not to "chat." Study everybody else, see what they've got, but don't make it obvious. That's where the shades come in handy. Try to remember what they have, and play your hand accordingly. There's no need to go for the Royal Flush if you see the ace card in somebody elses hands.

Try not to be a real live one, a fish or a pay station. To learn how to know when to place a certain amount of bet, practice at home by yourself. Set up several ghost players, and see what is delt out. I still do it, just for fun. I often practice with my boys right before I go out to a casino. Practice does make perfect.

But, how and when to bet is something a little hard to explain. There are so many varialbles, it's very hard to know where to start, That's why you have to practice. You learn with experience, if you keep your head in the game. The next time I play, I'll keep track for you. To me, it's more of an instinct.

Well, good luck. I hope helped some.

BLUFFING

They bet and tell you to "save your money".
If they really wanted you to save your money, they wouldn't have bet. Sometimes players say that just to create the opposite image, so look out. Few are that crafty though, so tell Uncle Jessup that he's bluffing and re-raise.

Being crafty really pays off in poker. :D
