Now, I don't want any nonsense about testicles in here. I'm talking about a serious problem.

I'm not allergic (I love nuts), but my wife is, so we have to maintain a nut-free house. Trouble is, this is kinda hard, because all the food retailers have got totally paranoid about nut allergies, and so are printing "May not be suitable for nut allergy sufferers" on the label. Our local supermarket has this pre-printed on all the in-store bakery labels, so even plain morning rolls are allegedly unsuitable.

I'd like to see two kinds of labels, one saying "This product has been made in an environment in which nuts are used", and "This product contains nuts". That way, people who are very sensitive can keep away from products with the former label on them, and people who have to actually eat a nut to get a reaction can keep away from products with the latter label on them. UK sandwich chain Pret a Manger does something similar.

Anyone else have issues with nut allergies?

I fortunately don't have such an allergy, but I can tell you the reason food manufacturers do that is to cover themselves from a legal viewpoint (I guess you figured that out) because any machinery that may be involved in the manufacturer of food that may have nuts in it (and it covers more than you think - bread, ice cream, chocolate, yoghurt, breakfast cereals - the list goes on and on) may not be cleaned properly from a production batch involving nuts, and thus contaminate 'none-nut-content' foods.

Can you believe that was only one sentence? Don't read it out loud without taking a breath.

I'm not allergic to nuts, but I do have some nasty local reactions to bee stings. Once my arm swelled to 2x normal size. Very painful and not fun.

But thankfully it's not a general reaction that you can die from.

I am alergic to peanuts in particlar, and almonds, but not seriously to almonds.

I just ignore the lables that say may contain traces of peanuts and the like. Most have nothing in them, but you have to be pickey.

What rolls do you buy that even come remotely close to peanuts? I just look on the ingredients list, and then tell from there.

I am allergic for dust and animal hairs. That totally sucks, because as soon as we found out i was allergic, we had to put our two cats away  Luckily they could live in a pet farm nearby, so i can still see them often :)

Having an allergy sux

That's my attitude. I know quite a lot about food, and do all the cooking in the house, so I also buy all the food. It means I can use my knowledge of food most of the time, and check the ingredients list the rest of the time.

My point about the rolls was that I knew there was no way there were any nuts in them - it was that all price labels for the in-store bakery stuff has the warning on it. The shop isn't differentiating between any of the products.

Ooh! Ooh! ME! ME! I'm allergic to nuts!

Found out when I was about 5 years old... went to Vons, and my mom gave me a sampler cookie with nuts. Jeezes, after eating that thing, I went to the water fountain and drank water for like a half hour! Went to allergy clinic, determined that I am in fact allergic. I'm allergic to ALL nuts, exception is almonds (which aren't true nuts anyway). However, I still try to avoid almonds, because they taste so much like "real" nuts, which makes my mouth squirm in agony...

However, I do tend to ignore the "may have traces..." labels. Very rarely can i detect any nut traces in those products, with some exceptions... for example, Sees candies. (Sidenote: You know how on the front of See's candies boxes, there's a picture of an old lady, who's supposed to be Mary Sees? Guess what... that's NOT Mary Sees. That was my great-great-great aunt! I'm not sure why Mary Sees wasn't really on it, but anyway I know that one of my past relatives is basically world famous :p )

Anyway, back to the subject... If the ingredients label has nuts in them, I don't eat. if it cautions "traces," I eat, but if I can taste/detect, I don't eat anymore. Otay? :D

You are luckey. I first found out when I ate cake @ 4, I turned RED, and had hives all over ALLL OVER. This was verrrryy Itchy. I got tested before I found out all of my alergies.

Banana (very bad, could kill me)
Peanuts/ Nuits (not as bad)
Hair/Dust alergies (I still have a dog)
Pollen

and on top of this, I have athesma.

I don't know anyone that is alergic to nuts, but I sure know people who hate to eat them. I can't figure it out...I love all kinds of peanuts and peanut butter! :cheeburga

8 times as many people die from reactions to nuts than die from MDMA in an average year (UK figures).

Nuts aren't 'class A'.

I haven't even got onto alcohol related deaths yet...

WOW, you truly are unlucky! I also have asthma, but, thankfully, I have almost grown out of it, though I still carry my inhaler at all times. Hair/dust/pollen is a common problem, obviously. That really sux that you're allergic to bananas... bananas are IMHO the best fruit ever! In fact, I make it a point to always eat at least one banana a day :D
