Tomorrow is my birthday and I'm gonna go out to eat SUSHI! I love that stuff...

anyone share my cravings? :)

About half the people like sushi here, and about a quarter mix sushi with sashimi.
I love sushi, Probably because half the time I eat American/European food, the other half, I eat very Asian food, including sushi, balut, egg drop soup, and, something else, I just can't remember the name.

Anything from the sea/ocean/ a lake is horrible IMO. As well as most things veggie.

@Sage- You're not serious about the second part are you?

Nothing beats a good roll with yellowtail or fried eel.

And nothing makes me more sad than somebody going to a good sushi place and ordering a California roll. I’ve yelled at people for doing that.

Don't like avocado?

I love it and so do my boys. We eat it at least once a month. I always get and extra side of rice, which is actually the 'sushi' part.

When it comes to sushi I mostly eat california rolls but I usually get something else with actual fish in it, like one of those salmon or shrimp things that are just lying on top of some rice (I'd love to know what these are called).

I really like sushi and sashimi. I prefer the spicier stuff, mainly spicy tuna and salmon rolls. I also like the Hamachi rolls. I tend to go out for sushi typically once a week, sometimes more, for lunch. There is a little place not to far from the university that offers a $9.99 lunch special which gives you three rolls, sunomono, and miso soup.

I've always wanted to try ikizukuri but I've never been anywhere that prepares it.

**Oh and California rolls are awful.

I love avocado – in a sandwich. But it’s not a satisfying substitute for fresh tuna (which is literally what the avocado is designed to replace, texturally). And I think putting cucumbers in sushi is one of the worst ideas ever, and I think that putting imitation crab in sushi is the worst idea ever.

I don't know...I always thought of sushi as... girly food. I mean, if you like sushi I won't think you're gay or something; it's just that most of the time I see people eating it, it's usually women.
It won't full me up, and too expensive for too little.
I'd rather have a good 24oz. Skirt Steak. (:

Have you ever had sushi? Two rolls fills me up, three if I'm really hungry. It's a lot of rice, which is always filling. Also I think every sushi place I've ever been in has a majority of men eating there, always between 20-35. It's also not terribly expensive.

No offense taken but you can get pretty full on sushi...to the point that your belly physically bulges out like Paul Newmans in the the movie Cool Hand Luke...:)

It is expensive but so is steak...

the most rolls I've eaten is six...it was so good but it hurt so bad afterwards...

Oh yea BTW where do you all usually order sushi...any chains, or just private sushi bars???

Imitation crab (pollock fish) is a definite no-no, but I go to a place that'll serve you a California roll with REAL crab. Also, I get the California roll with yellowtail sashimi draped over it. It's called a "rainbow roll."

I also love the "spider roll" and pieces of nori and extra sushi to nibble.

Like I said, we love the stuff. Been going there since both boys were three-year-olds. They can't get enough! 👍

Sounds alot like me and the usual crew I eat it with...i love the fact of sharing several rolls with friends, its a great way to spend a night especially if you have a great sushi bar to go to...

If I'm not mistaken the Spider Roll has something fried in it...I'm not a huge fan of the rolls with fried seafood in them...I particularly like a california roll with real crab or the great specialty rolls that they serve at the OSAKA's in town. Some of those are amazing!

Well, If I say it won't full me up...it's because I've tried it before..
Dude, a roll is like..what, an inch and a half long? if 2 rolls fill you up, then you're obviously not capable of downing some Baby back ribs, or a double whopper with cheese. I understand that it may not be as healthy as sushi, and probably you're one of those guys who eat salad, yogurt, and really watch their eating habits, it's fine. But here, at least the people who I know or hang out with, know that a steakhouse is more likely a place for us to eat at, whereas our girlfriends, always talk about gathering at a sushi place.

And no kidding, I've had sushi like five times, since there are plenty of sushi joints here in NYC, and I can tell you that 85-90% of the costumers, are women. That's all.

Um, try an inch and a half wide, and at least half a foot long. You’re obviously talking about one little cut from a whole roll.

Spider roll has fried crab with a creamy, spicy mayo. It's kind of a 'crab salad with a kick' maki roll. They serve it with fried crab legs and position them to make a 'spider.' The boys think it's 'cool!' I think it's 'tasty!'

That's what you see in every sushi place here, and I know it's not that big.

I really get the feeling you have never had sushi before, a roll is, as Sage said quite large and typically contains 6 1" pieces sometimes 8 pieces depending on the place you go.

See my clarified edit.
So what is a sushi roll for you guys?
My girlfriend went to this gourmet food market in the east village, and bought a plate with no more than 4 of those thingies, and it cost $12!!

A roll is how sushi is normally presented to you if they don’t put it on a platter/sampler, and as Joey said usually has 6–8 (though I’ve also seen 10) pieces. A restaurant that isn’t trying to rip you off will usually sell each roll for $6–10.

Perhaps they dislike sushi but were dragged there by friends....
Yes, yes, we all know you don’t like anything non-bovine, Dan. :p

$6-$10 is still a rip off, every place around me sells rolls for $3-$5 depending on the type of fish. Only the fancy places will charge you $10 and they taste no different.

Well, almost everything is ridiculously expensive in Manhattan. But anyhow, the times I've gone to Japanese places outside of Manhattan, sushi is really expensive in comparison to the rest of the food.

There's a place in Long Island, called Monado's, it's a Japanese buffet. Cost for each person is $32! :yuck: No thanks.

Okay, say you order a regular hamburger...two buns and a meat paddy with mustard and ketchup only for a dollar. A big mac taste alot different for almost like what, triple or quadruple the price. I agree its expensive and fancy places charge 10+ but if its a decent restaurant your going to have a worthwile experience for the extra money...it better taste different for ten dollars lol

Just because something is inexpensive doesn't mean it's bad. The only reason the $10 are more expensive is because of the name of the restaurant. The sushi looks the same, prepared in the same way, and tastes the same. I refuse to pay that kind of money for atmosphere and a name. The place I frequent is a little mom and pop restaurant, but it's still some of the best sushi I've had in the area. Granted the places out west in California you do get what you pay for. Remember I'm in Michigan, we aren't that cultured.

When I want sushi, we go to the japanese buffet. 16-18 bucks for all-you-can-eat.

If you’re in Cali, that’s called a pretty good deal. ;) I mean, here, if you go to a restaurant with a waiter, even a basic cheeseburger will easily set you back 6 bucks.
