Yesterday I had a copy of Age of Empires III waiting for me under the tree, I was desperate to begin fragging the Portuguese. Today I installed it, and in true https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=64#
ScaredChristmas fashon it didn't work. The problem seems to be centerd around a missing file, "binkw32.dll," the odd thing is that it isn't actually missing, it's right there in the root directory for AoEIII.

So here it is:

And here is what happens when I try to play the game:

I have reinstalled the game 4 times to no avail, Microsoft support are useless so I was wondering if any GTPers have any ideas.

This happened to me on severeal occasions with a couple of different games.

Once, i reinstalled and it worked fine, another time, i copy and pasted the binkw32 into all folders just in case you know:D, and another time i think i downloaded a non corrupt version of the file.

I have just tried the methods you suggested. None of the five versons of binkw32 I have tried work and I have tried pasting it into every folder but have had no sucsess.

can you download the file off the internet, or did you try that already?
Or just make a lot of copies of that file into the same folder.

It looks like you're trying to run it from the CD...

Do you get the same error from Start > programs > ... > AoEIII or whatever?

Check the attributes of the file.

I show it being 188kb and version 1.8.3.0. Just a coule of things to verify.

Ah ha, the version I downloaded (after my first attempts at fixing the problem failed) was 3.0.0.0. I'm looking foward to a painfully slow reinstallation but this time it might just work.

Edit:

Nope, still wont work, new error message this time;

:banghead: .

Do you still have it copied into the window's directory from Spock's suggestion? If so, remove it or simply rename and try again.

Did you reboot after you deleted the file from the windows directory?

By the way, I just did a search on my system and I don't have any bink*.dll files installed in the windows directory, only within the program folder.

 and good luck!

Do what the error dialog says then. :dopey:

I know a guy with AoEIII working fine, so maybe it's you.

Or maybe the game loader is either looking in the wrong location for the dll or it is looking for the dll under a different file name. :)
