Apple overtakes Microsoft

It's a really good time to be an Apple fanboy. I don't consider myself one, since I'm a PC. But have an iPod, so I guess I contributed to this.

I bet that it's an even better time to be an Apple stockholder.

All I hope is that Apple won't stagnate now that they are the biggest tech company in the world.

Whilst all the Apple fanboys jump up and down a few things still have to be remembered...

Microsoft are still completely dominant in the desktop market.

And while they are higher up the chain in the mobile field, they're still not even close to being the leading force (based on sales), and while those are 2009 statistics, they're basically the same for current times, although Android has gained.

Apple's share price is also currently being driven up by the shipping of the iPad and upcoming iPhone.

I hate Apple and their Ipods. Firstly, they have took a UNIX operating system and modded it and now you have to purchase it. Umm.. last time I checked, the whole point of UNIX is to be free. Then, they've got overpriced Ipods which I can get things similar, WAAAY cheaper (I am a proud owner of a Sansa e250 v1 Rockboxed). Also, I hate monopolies, like Apple.

OF course Apple is making more than MS now, with almost a decade of s***y ipods and iphones which re-release every few months under a new guise.

They even blocked some of the models homebrrew ability, making them even more useless as they dont support quality audio files like wav , flac, and video files like mkv and avi.

Not to mention the millions of yuppies who purchase Mac computers for exorbitant prices even tho they can hardly use MS Office.

Of course Apple are worth more than Microsoft - they're two companies in one. I can only guess Microsoft receives, what, £100 every time an ASUS laptop is sold with their OS installed on it. Every time a MacBook is sold, Apple receives £900 or however much the thing cost, and probably have a higher profit margin on their machines compared to other manufacturers. And they sell eleventymillion iPods, iPhones and iPads while MS only have the Zune - a device that's not even sold outside of North America and Canada. It just adds up.

But as it's been already stated, this has so little to do with market share it's not even funny. And personally I don't care. They make computers with OSes that make me want to stab myself just that little bit less, and for that I happily pay extra. Much like I pay extra to shop at a supermarket where the chicken doesn't taste of water.

Yes, you're right. Apple should spend millions developing their operating systems and then just offer them as a free download 👍

And while we're at it, Evian should operate a similar business plan - after all, they're selling a refined version of something I can walk up to a river and drink for free, right?

Hon-est-leeee...

So by 'quality' you presumably mean 'ancient', then?

How about taking a look at what market they're designed to fulfill before taking a pop at them. When was the last time you saw AmazonMP3 or 7Digital offering songs in .wav format?

If you're desperate to listen to music in such superb loss-less quality that you need to resort to WAVs, you're not going to be walking around with earbuds in.

Similarly, AVIs have been around for nearly as long as I have. Things change, file formats need to evolve - particularly when they spit out such gargantuan files.

Not to mention the millions of yuppies who purchase Mac computers for exorbitant prices even tho they can hardly use MS Office.

Oh well, they're idiots then. What about the thousands of filmmakers that buy them for Final Cut Pro? I suppose they all get up each morning and need to be told which shoe goes on which foot.

, I hate monopolies, like Apple.

Exactly in what way, by any definition, is Apple a monopoly, when they have just over 5% market share for personal computing operating systems, and what appears to be no more than about 10% market share in smartphone OSs?

Apple Products have their place, IBM Compatibles have their place, OpenSource also has it's place. I use all three in the capacity for which they function the best. For example:

Apple for my recording studio. Hands down the best solution. Ok, so my dual processor G4 cost way more than my PC that I built for recording, but it hasn't crashed once in the 8 years I have used it. Not once! This is very important as I have paying customers in my studio. They don't need my hardware/software stifling their creativity. With in the next year or so, I will be replacing my G4 with a new G5 with plans on getting another 10 years of use out of it. So if you talk of costs, I can buy one Apple PC every 10 years, or 3 IBM Compatible products every 10 years. I think I'm ahead with the Apple product in this application.

Another great Apple product I am sold on is the iPad. Flame away, but after a day or two of basic browsing, and apps usage, my keyboard and mouse interface on the PC seems outdated and cumbersome. My wife, almost uses it exclusively.

IBM PC's, I used these for just about everything else....games, videos, music, web design, ect. Although I am leaning towards a Apple for graphics applications, keeping my IBM PC's for non-business stuff.

OpenSource, Web Hosting servers. MySQL/PHP, Linux Dist has been wonderful for this application.

All I can say is educate yourself and use the right tool for the job. Blanket statements are worthless in my opinion. Every options has it's pros and cons. Use what works best for you but keep in mind that your needs may differ from someone else.

They aren't yet, they have shown signs of trying to be one though. Mainly with their portable products.

It's more than possible to be a monopoly without having the marketshare.

I do like Apple products, but the way they control things and limit them to certain things is a big turn off.

I quite liked the iPad when I had a play with one. I can't even slightly afford one, but I did get the impression that it's one of those things you'd not be able to do without after an extended time. Definitely something as simple as the apps or internet browsing using just a fingertip, especially on link-heavy sites like youtube and the like - so much easier and more intuitive on a touch-screen.

My wife loves it! Honestly...., it has been one of the best presents I have ever got her. The lack of flash support hasn't seemed to affect her and has found many other things to do other than Farmville. Facebook and personal journals are her major uses right now, but she's loaded her music, videos, and pictures on it as well... I've downloaded my share of apps, from remote desktop VCN, to Real Racer, to air hockey, to Plants vs. Zombies. It's awesome! I'm holding out for a 160gb version, then I might hop on board with her. :-)

Well, i couldnt agree less with you...... first off iPod and iPhones dont release every few months, they are developed and released on a yearly cycle...... mac are different but apple wants to keep up with technology. Secondly, if i was Mr Jobs, i wouldnt want people homebrewing on a device that i created and should be used for the purpose it was made for, and those file formats are utter crap now a days, welcome to the modern world of .mp3 and .mp4 mate!!! And lastly, i love using pages as well as Office 2007 to comprise my school documents to be used in Office 2003. Macs are the most multi-purpose machines around, i mean if you want to pay the premium for best overall package on the market, you can even go mad and put a certain inferior OS on called windows?? IMO, Macs and the i line-up that Apple put out are among the best products in the world, for sure they are expensive, but you pay for what you get in the modern world im afraid, and thats coming from a 15 year old!! MY OPINION BY THE WAY PEOPLE!!

First, use some capital letters and puncuation.

Second, Apple releases new iPod/iPhone variants on a 6 to 12 month cycle for something like the last decade.

I fail to see how a Mac is the most multi-purpose tool on the market. It has the most easy to use applications installed on it from the factory, after you pay the premium, but I have applications for everything on my Win7 computer, and nearly all of them are free and superior to Apple's various applications.

Also, Apple uses .aac for their music, not .mp3, and they can credit Rio for getting the copyright troubles handled for digital file formats from CD. As for video, I belive they use a container on the H.264, which they also did not develop. The highest quality formats on the market are still free formats, .flac for audio and .mkv for video.

Honestly, before you make such an opinionated post, I advise you to at least get some facts in order first.

Or you're just a troll.

I use windows 7 for photo editing and heavy documents. It is stable and software is available to do every job. It works well and does a solid job.

The I use linux (ubuntu) for web browsing and casual use. It's super quick and a joy to use. All software is free and people are always willing to help.

So I paid £400 for my laptop, £35 for windows 7 and Ubuntu was free. The equivalent Macbook is £1499. Although the mac is slightly higher specs, it isn't something I could spec for any extra £150 from Dell. Only thing I would want from the Mac is the battery life.

In conclusion I hope you get your first car with that Mac. Then you get what you pay for.

Ummm... UNIX is meant to be free. By Apple selling UNIX based OS and making profit off of it, this makes the Open Source community pissed off. I don't care how much they spend on OSX, but if its gonna be sold for a price, Apple should go 🤬 themselves. At least Red hat linux has a free OS called Fedora, so I think Apple should follow.

Can you tell me their market share in portable music devices???
Thats right, they have the majority market share in that category, which makes them a monopoly in that sector. OWNED.

There are many Unix flavors that cost money. They aren't charging for Unix licensing, they are charging for their flavor of it. Apple is not the only one doing this...don't forget to flame these guys also: AIX, BSD/OS, HP-UX, IRIX, SCO, Solaris and Tru64 for example.

I guess my only other question is who are you to feel like you should be entitled to free software? I sort of understand what you are saying, but have you ever used UNIX in it's original state? It's not that pretty...., and outside of a server environment, not that useful to today's standards. Are you an Open Source contributor or just a Open Source user?

Here's a quick read on what a Monopoly is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly

By this definition of many buyers and only one seller, Apple does not have the monopoly on portable media devices, even if they do have the market share of sales.

Remember that telephone company, who was it.....Bell? They were the only ones selling telephone service. Buyers HAD to buy service from Bell because there was no one else offering the service. That was a monopoly.

There is clearly more portable media devices besides Apple.

Why do some people just have to indiscriminately bash everything Apple? Pako is absolutely right, the best computer is the one that works the best for YOU and for YOUR situation. Whatever computer you are most comfortable with and most productive with should be what you use. Remember though, not everyone's requirements are the same as yours.

I use Windows, Unbuntu and Mac OS X regularly, but for me, Mac OS X works the best for ME. I don't care that Windows works magically for you, since in my experience, Mac OS X still works the best for ME. And you know what, I'm willing to pay a little more for something that I prefer to use much more. We are all consumers here and we can vote with our money. If you don't like Macs, just don't purchase them, it's just that simple.

Are you an Open Source contributor or just a Open Source user?

I am actually both, I help report bugs for Ubuntu launchpad and own many linux distros such as Fedora (Goddard 13 is out!), OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, and Mandriva.

Also, I get your point about the UNIX argument. But, to make the most effect on your goal, you must go for your biggest enemy first.

Oh, but....you don't program? Offer OS enhancements or code for the community?

And how can you own, that which is free?

Fun fact: vBulletin (i.e the software GTPlanet uses for its forums) is based on PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS and Javascript (all of which are open source programming languages) and is then sold by a company called Jelsoft for a profit. In other words, they are doing exactly the same thing that you claim to despise Apple for.

Feel free to explain to me how you're so comfortable browsing a vBulletin based site when you think another company behaving the same way should 'go *expletive* themselves'. It's fine, I'll be waiting.

Clever.

@Pako:
I am starting to learn Python, which is used in many programming situations in Ubuntu.
@Jondot
Well UNIX was intended to be used for free software, but PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS and Javascript had no intention of being used for a profit or no profit. UNIX on the other hand supports open source programs.
@HACKr
Woah wait.. I thought Apple ditched Darwin after Tiger was released.
I also can't find a download link for it...

Just trying to find out why you have such an unsubstantiated opinion about Apple and what they should do with their free time. The more information I get from you, the less I am convinced that you actually have any valid points for your feelings towards Apple.
