Arcade mode car classes

How are the car classes in Arcade mode worked out? Is it like the power and weight together determine what class the car is in ie. Toyota Levin '83/85 (im confused) with 260hp and 7hundredandsomething kg being in class S but give it only 250hp and its in class A? Or is it something totally different? :confused:
 
That system makes no sense to me. Not only that, but there's no clear explanation for how it works. To me, a car is always the same class...if it's a C class car (primarily for city driving), it should stay that way no matter what you do to it.
 
thats very truu. there should be stock C class, and then HP classes in the modded variations. Maybe GT4 system is better? Iuno. Also, for S class it makes no sense that a jaguar XKR (a mediocre car at best) be put up against supercars like the viper, RUF CTR, and especially that speed demon vector M12. Sure 390hp is a lot, but the jagular is underpar in S class. And plus, it isnt much faster on the track than a skyline or a corvette.
 
The different classes of cars are set into alphabetical rankings. C slowest cars : Demio, B FTO, A Skyline, S fastest cars: Castrol Supra.
 
Yeah, but what is the criteria for speed? Gran Turismo never tells you how much...in the first game or the 2nd. I don't know about the 3rd..I think it may be some sort of Japanese racing class system (the way Kei cars have their own class is derived from engine size {no larger than 660 cc's} and power. Maybe I'll do and internet search on Japanese racing and see what comes up.
 
The car "classes" seem to be based on a power-to-weight ratio. If you modify a car's power output and/or weight, it will change classes.

I've never figured out exactly what the limits for each class are, but it's not based on absolute power. As I recall, the Tommy Kaira ZZ-S (~190 hp) lands itself in the same Class (A) as the Corvette (~335 hp) and Skyline GT-R ("276" hp). Of course, the ZZ-S is much lighter than the other two I mentioned, yet has less power than the Altezza RS200 and the Audi TT in Class B.
 
I haven't been able to find out anything about real Japanese racing classes, except for the fact that there are real-life versions of GT300 and GT500. GT300, for instance, features cars that have about 300 hp.

Here's what we get:
A: 7.77 to 12.46 (Skyline brings it down, though it has about 330 hp when in your garage)
B: 11.11 to 15.93 (PT Spyder and S2000 better the GT-R in ratio comparison)
C: 17.23 to 31.15 (pretty much anything with a 17 or above goes here)

So the lb/hp ratio theory kind of falls on it's face. However, the S2000 tops out at 340hp or so, and the PT Spyder at 250. So maybe it's a measure of potential power?
 
Yeah dude, I'm telling you: the system makes no sense. I'm a numbers-cruncher too, and I use pound to power ratios to figure out how to make the races in GT2 a fair fight. I think the only way we're gonna get an answer to this question is to contact Polyphony Digital! Or something.

even though the elise and watever haf low lb/HP, they are pretty damn slow compared to a mustang with more lb/hp (SVT Cobra). That doesnt make any sense at all.
 
When I run the arcade mode, I like to enter the BClass. I always selected the S2000 because I had the feeling it was the best car. Now, with the numbers provided by pupik, I understand why my "feeling" is correct.
 
If you want to finish up Arcade Mode quickly, just take some special model--the Denso Sard Supra does fine, and enter. It will be in A Class but will outclass any AI. (Using load guest garage...)

Arcade Mode doesn't actually count any percentage in GT2, does it?

I think the Arcade mode has its own percentage, actually. You don't win any money; instead you just unlock cars...then when you're done, you get some sort of picture show from Gran turismo in the credits section. Woo hoo.

Actually, I think you'll find the Denso Supra is in class S. :)

Yeah, but why is a 276hp, 16something - 17something hundred kilo Mazda Cosmo Type-E CCS in class B? Shouldn't it belong in class A? :confused:

I bought a Mazda Cosmo and hat it upgraded to 600-some hp. Yet, I swear that my 440hp Cuda out-accelerated and out-handled it. I'm not sure why, but there are few cars like the Cosmo and the Mercury Cougar (the new one, not the XR7) that can be pumped up as much as you like and still move slow.

BTW people, it's horsepower/lb, not the other way around. :lol: Crunch the numbers again and it will make more sense. ;)

Actually, it's a ratio, so it doesn't matter which number goes first. As long as you maintain consistency, the figures will still make sence no matter what the numerator or denominator are, as long as you know which way is up. I stated weight first, and power afterwards.

You're just used to the principle of more is always better, when sometimes less is more.

How about the maxed out S2000 at 364? And it goes like a cheetah with a rocket engine stuck up its.. you know...
 
the reason why that friggin cuda has a TON load of torque and power occurs below the 6000 horizon. thats why muscle cars are fast speed demons! :)

I finally got behind the wheel of a GTX last nite...talk about smooth power. But damn, that thing handles like a boat! I put soft tires and a semi-racing suspension on it and actually won the 2nd Sports Car cup last nite...the one at Deep Forest. I could only manage 3rd @ Trail Mountain, though.
 
that transmission sucks sht. if anything, upgrade it to a 5 speed, so power delivery is excellent too. The 3 spd w/ overdrive just kills the engine on 3rd gear.....

Very true. 1st gear gets you to 50 mph...2nd only gets to 67...then it kicks to 3rd gear...and the engine's only revving @ 2,000 rpms or something'! It's like a big boat.
 
Okay, back to the point at hand, people. I think when you did the comparison of power:weight, you missed a factor. It should be power:weight:torque. Also, remember that someone had to sit at a desk and program these cars, so an S-Class car is programmed to compete with another S-Class car. I mean, IRL, the V8 Vantage would get spanked by the Viper GTS on the track (statistically), due to it's better handling and lighter body (at a sacrifice of only 100 ponies...), and yet they compete quite well in the game. What it all comes down to is how the cars were programmed to handle a tcertain levels of tuning.
 
I think that the class of ur car iz determined by how it is tuned......for example: I have the Mazda Miata A Spec and it has 250hp and has the turbo, drivetrain modifications, and its racing modified
