Are all Audi TTs turbo?

No - a version has just been released with the 3.2 litre V6 from the Golf.

Prior to that - I think from memory all versions ran the 1.8 litre turbo four, but in two stages of tune.

Pretty much vat_man has it - from 2000 to the 2004 model year, they exclusively ran two different turbocharged four-cylinder engines, putting out 180 and 225hp each; a 250hp 3.2L V-6 has gone in for '04 to try to shed the 'girly' image.

On the other hand, they're all ugly, overpriced, and still based on a Beetle.

It's certainly an interesting looking car - I read an interview with a car designer (can't remember who) who described it as a great piece of industrial design, 'although not what you'd call beautiful'.

I think it was a car Audi needed to build, if only to try and break away from that 'builder of sedans that want to be but aren't as good as BMW' image that seems to dog them.

Mind you, I'd quite happily settle for an A6 4.2 litre Quattro sedan...

It screams wealth and oozes with quality - I considered a 'nearly new' A6 4.2 for a while several months ago until I realised I didn't fit in with the clientele of swanky professionals with trophy wives. The asking price is huge, too - almost $48000 US, with which I could have two of any 2003 Hyundai. Still, it might just be worth it.

Well, in my instance, we're talking big lotto win here. I suspect if I'm after affordable (for me) medium sized AWD sedans I'm going to be behind boxer motors for a while yet.

Actually, just on that, on the drive to work last week, the other half inquired about lease payouts (we're a bit over two years into a four lease on big blue) and suggested she might interested in a new one around June/July next year. Which was somewhat of a surprise.

So - all I need now is Subaru to cough up the 3.0 H6 in the standard Liberty/Legacy range, and put a manual box behind it, and I'm set.

No chance.

Damn right there's no chance - no Legacy sedans get the H6 over here, just my Outback sedan, and those begin at $28700 (AU $41500) which is a terrible value - I bought mine because I wanted it and nothing else, but if I were shopping on the criteria of 'value,' I'd rather kill myself than have it. Topping that, automatic's the only transmission they're sold in, and even above that, performance isn't terribly great - it seems like I'm getting the worst of all performance worlds with mine, consiering 0-60 hovers around 8 seconds (2.5GT is around 10, though, so 8 isn't bad comparatively) and fuel economy barely keeps itself above 21mpg.

I see Outback VDC sedans on the street (rarely) and I wonder how in the hell the owner got talked into buying it - all family sedan competitors have a better value, and AWD can be had for just $19800 (AU $28600) with a Legacy L, rendering the VDC sedan almost completely useless.

Then again, if Subaru's serious about making the Legacy a family sedan market competitor (over here it's a left-field choice - the Outback is insanely popular, but nobody buys the Legacy) maybe they'll offer that H6 as a serious choice on all the Legacy line, and at a cheaper price to compete with Toyota and Honda. Of course, if they did, that it would also require more power, which I think is a bit too much to ask Subaru for one redesign.

"Affordable AWD" spells "Skoda" for me. Then again, I have no idea which VAG products are available in the land of Oz.

Only VW, Audi and Bentley, unfortunately. There's a been a couple of stabs at Seat, but no-one's been able to make it work.

Actually, AWD is starting to appear in the locals. Holden have just launched an 'Outback' style AWD version of their V8 Commodore wagon, called the Adventra, and Mitsubishi have had AWD on the Magna (think Diamante) for about twelve months now. Ford are pretty close, with a soft-roader based on the Falcon platform.

Don't forget the other new TT - it's a 160hp FF... NA 1.8.

Apparently, without the heavy differential nonsense, it's only 0.5s slower to 60mph than the 180hp 4WD version...

Hasnt subaru just released the Legacy Sedan GT? Just been released here in SA, so you should have it too. Got the WRX 2.0 litre engine with turbo giving 172kw. Looks a little bit like the IS430 from behind though....

Yeah - but it'a auto only here...and I've got to convert the other half, who's deeply suspicious of turbo motors. I've got the H6 sold, but I'm battling with the turbo.

Actually went and had a look at the new Liberty/Legacy at the Sydney Motorshow this evening - pretty impressive job, interior seems a bit nicer, with a bit more room, and Subaru are even dressing their motors up now! I'll put up some photos later.

:) :) :)

TT usually stands either for "Time Trial" or "Tourist Trophy".

V6 TT is very nice, especially with DSG, and makes a lovely noise. Is definitely the one to have in the range. Feels much quicker than the 225BHP Turbo-4, but statistically is not.

I've owned a TT before the EVO. With some mods it was making somewhere around 250HP. It also had full Rieger body kit.. I liked it until I got a chance to drive an evo TME... So I owned my TT for only 2 or so months, sold it (now it's somewhere in France) to get my current car.:D
Anyways here are some pics of it:
