As my first thread, I'd like to touch upon something that I've noticed in GT5, and something which bothers me a little. The replays often seem pretty boring, confusing and downright unlike Gran Turismo!

Now to clarify this thread has nothing to do with the quality of the graphics, though for sure the weather/dust effects 'glitch' doesn't help, but no, what I mean is the choice of camera angles used and the general lack of artistic direction in some of the replays, which really make the replays quite dull to watch mostly.

While some circuits have a decent replay with some nice unique camera angles and epic swooping camera movements (Madrid seems to be quite nice like this), other such as La Sarthe really seems to be a succession of cameras planted near or on the road which watch you approach the camera and screech past the camera.... then rinse and repeat. Especially bad on La Sarthe since it has so many long straights.

Not to start an argument, but it feels all rather like Forza, which had very uninspiring replays. I particularly detest the camera angle that is 'hooked' onto the car floating about and it's used far far too often. There seems to be hardly any of the old classic camera angles which really made even GT3 appear almost photo-realistic at times. None of the static or very gently tracking camera angles from a great distance just showing you the cars taking a hairpin or a chicane.

The replays are for the most part very 'in your face', far too close to your car for too much of the time, you never really get a sense for what's really going on, and it just seems disappointing cos replays are the one area where GT has always gone that bit more epic with.

Plus, I was hoping eventually a racing game would have a replay system which actually focused on the racing action, whether it involves you or not, rather than it being literally locked onto your car, no matter what. basically give me some televisual camera work, some overhead heli-cams too, and I'll be a happy guy!

Long description, sorry, but please let me know what you think about the replays!

I think the replays are excellent, Monza has some awesomely placed cameras! I miss what they used to do in GT3 with the filters, but I think the replays are cool, they just need rewind & Fast Forward.

Generally I think the replays are great, but what I do miss is the option to watch the race from the drivers point of view whether that be bumper, cockpit or chase cam.
I would have thought that this option, and being able to switch between the view of all the drivers was an essential part of the replay theatre. Perhaps I'm missing something, but I pored over a couple of replays yesterday and could not find an option to change cameras. Apart from the 'follow driver' option which just changes the external camera to focus on another car.

Hit the select button.

Do the replays sync on GT5? If so, do they sync with your custom tracks aswell?

But anyway, a replay director mode would be a great addition.

I, for one, don't care for the swooping camera angles. Any shot that can't be done by a real camera makes the replay look fake, imo.

If you move the cursor up you will move to the top of the screen during replays, and then you can bring up a list of all the drivers and then view the replay from them. Then use select to cycle the cameras.

I normally watch the race from the AI driver at the front and then go onvoard and watch myself sliding around as I take the lead. If you go onboard the AI cars, you can use the look back button to look back, so while your coming through the field you can look back and watch yourself passing everyone.

It's amazing at times knowing that driver your watching passing cars is you :)

Well said KopparbergDave! I'm with you 100%.

I hope they improve what is already there to be more like GT4.

Correct. They need to model the replay cameras after what TV cameras can do, not hollywood fantasy.

Something I have seen more and more of is a fast rapid cut system for replays where the camera zooms in on the car far too often and shows off the car more than the race... I feel like this has crept into gt5 somewhat.

I like a sexy close up of a car on a long straight but for the most part a wide high angle is going to give the best view of the action... not low fast cut zoomed angles which I feel like there are too many of...

I would have loved a chopper view for the race, a God view even maybe and the ability to place replay cameras where you want for custom replays and the ability to handle the zoom (or at least max zoom) on said cameras.

I would have glady spent an hour or two even perfecting camera setups for replays if I knew I could reap the benfits in my replays from then on out...

BTW ff/rewind and slow mo please also...

We can no longer switch between cars using the pad - sad.... :/

hmm weird.. well I did try hitting select as you guys suggested. But my select button does nothing in the replays. I can change between each car ok in the top right table, but pressing select does nothing. Nowhere can i seem to be able to cycle through the cameras. i did try on the wheel (G25) and on the controller. I REALLY want to be able to utilise this feature !

For races recorded offline (Arcade mode or GTLife) this works. For races recorded online, you can not switch/change the camera angle--it's fixed to 3rd party view--at least for OTHER cars. You can change the view from your own car. Odd that it's not work for you.

I agree, real races can be covered by static cameras on La Sarthe, so no reason why the games cameras can't mimic this.

The replays are a mess, I very seldom watch them because they just look a mess.

I just came back to edit my last post. After doing a hot lap around the 'ring, I replayed and could switch between cameras using 'select'. So then I thought it probably the online mode where there is no option to move around camera. And so it seems, that is the case. Sorry for the confusion!
Although I thought I did try from 'my' car camera in the online race and it would not change veiws there either. I will look into it a little more... thanks

Wonder why you can't zoom in with the triangle button anymore, and why they added the stupid "replay menu".

I was hoping for an replay mode that automatically switched focus depending on what was happening in the race, instead of focusing on one car at a time.

Btw, what happend to the synchronized replay from GT4? Or the abbility to turn on/off the music, or fast forward?

I miss the Hollywood fantasy. Sure, this looks more realistic, but realistic looks slow. The likes of GRID replays looked amazing with it's exaggerated camera angles and shaky cams and just made the race look all the more action-oriented and exciting. Not to mention the fact that you could drive fairly badly and it'd make you look like a professional just through the choice of views it showed.

In my opinion the replays still don't look anywhere near realistic. There's plenty of unrealistic camera angles. My main complaint with replays is that the camera is almost always zoomed way too closely on the cars, to see what's going on. It's obvious Polyphony was more concerned with showing off their beautiful car modeling skills rather than what happened in the race. It would be nice to have an option like we did in GT4.

Yeah I know what you mean, but at least it's not as bad as Forza 2. Not to start another vs argument but those got a lot of complaints, practically zero shots of the track or other cars. The view was so zoomed in you couldn't even tell when you were cornering unless you looked at the angle of the tires.

Number 75 on the list of things that took a step backwards.

Poor camera angles, fewer options, less control of the replay or car tracking, less control of the way it looks.

Plus you can't watch from onboard in a replay of an online race!!! I mean, what were they thinking?

Yes this is a step backward in a number of ways.

I hadn't noticed that the camera angles were not as good, however I did notice
- not being able to switch cars with D-pad
- more limitations as to when replays can be saved
- no ability to -name- the replay

I wish the replays would remain static from time to time just take advantage of the game's doppler effect. I find that the game switches camera angles way too quickly and doesn't take advantage of the game's excellent sound in replay's.

The helicopter tracking shot on the long straight at the Nurburgring is the most impressive for me.

Worst are probably the cameras at the Top Gear track - really needed the real life angles - particularly the track side camera at the follow-through.

Agreed, I don't mind a few of these unreal camera angles, but they're used ALL THE TIME, and practically no realistic camera angles, or very dull ones which seem to have no thought put into them. Seriously if they let me take control of replays they'd at least be clearer to watch and hopefully look quite good! :p

I'm glad a few people have posted in support of my general views, nice to know I'm not the only one. I'm pretty sure even good camera angles from previous versions of the game have usually been changed to something different on tracks which have made a return. I'm sure Grand Valley especially.

Shall need to find some video comparisons!!!
