Are you Faster With a Wheel?

I've got a DFGT wheel and while I quite like it, I'm useless with it compared to the pad and have resorted to using the pad and am considering whether I should just return it.

Yet I read on here that most people seem to be faster with a wheel. So what's the score, I'm assuming I'm just rubbish with the wheel as other people on here seem to be ok.

The thing I struggle with the most is correcting over steer. On a pad a quick flick in the opposite direction usually will sort it whereas with the wheel, short of turning it so aggressively that the thing topples over, it's very hard to correct.

What should I do, just improve and get a better stand or stick to the pad and save myself some money by returning the wheel?

Cheers guys.

Just keep practicing with the wheel, a sturdy platform is a must, and eventually you will drive much smoother and events like correcting oversteer will become rarer. Or you might hate the wheel more and use the pad.

I'm still learning with my DFGT, but I am definitely faster. The Nascar special events (taking the corners without hitting the cones) were MUCH easier. 'Throwing' the car into a corner is also more reliable and easier. Countersteering is still difficult, but with the controller I find this difficult as well.

Short answer Yes. reason is because I can be much smoother with the steering angle and smoother more accurate throttle and brake input too

I have a DFGT, had another wheel before that.
My first tries with a wheel were terrible.
It takes time to get used to the new interface, which is normal. Just don't quit now, but try to enjoy your new wheel. Get in a slow car and practice, practice. Don't try to be faster with the wheel, just enjoy the new experience (just see it as a new set of 'challenges'). Once you get used to the wheel, you'll never want to go back to a pad.

Have fun!

It really is necessary to have a cockpit for the wheel, if you want to be faster with it. Your chair, the wheel, and the pedals need to be firmly attached to one another for you to use them effectively. Google: Playseat, Obutto

Maybe you have a hallway/room/somewhere where you can put your chair up against the wall behind you, and the pedals (and something you mount the wheel to) against the wall in front of you. That might work... but if you can't do that or buy a cockpit then you're just gonna suck with the wheel. Sorry. :(

I'm much faster with my DFGT, it allows me to be more accurate with acceleration, braking and steering although it take me something like a week or 2 to get used to it but from the time trials I did on Prologue I was up to a second faster with the wheel and it’s about 10 times more fun.

I also go much faster with a wheel.

The thing I struggle with the most is correcting over steer. On a pad a quick flick in the opposite direction usually will sort it whereas with the wheel, short of turning it so aggressively that the thing topples over, it's very hard to correct.

Do you have the wheel mounted to something solid? It shouldn't topple over if you do. Correcting oversteer seems to be pretty easy for me, and doesn't take an aggressive movement at all.

Also, try and start out with slower/easier cars to get used to it.

I have my wheel sitting on a table connected to nothing. I feel like if I need to jerk the wheel enough To make it move I'm trying too hard and not driving smooth enough for fast laps.

Oh yea, original question. Faster with old school g25 than controller.

I'm faster with the dfgt but I'm still not bad with the pad, Its all just practise practise practise, use TC to help you get a feel for it. I'm a cheapass i have it mounted on a sawhorse lol its stable as.

lol, bolt the wheel to something and have another go, it'll be 100 times better.

A wheel/peddles without some kind of cockpit is just fail.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I need to get a decent mount for it. The Wheelstand Pro is too expensive at £95 so have just been using an ironing board as a temporary thing :D

I did consider this - http://www.tablemate2.com/table-mate_II_video3.html but think it would probably be too flimsy and light. Does anyone have any cheap prebought solutions? I did read through the 20 page thread on steering wheel mounts (think it was this forum) but couldn't really see any cheap option.

I've been using an old speaker stand, not ideal but does the job as it's pretty heavy.

Try building one?

Its not hard, I suck at that kind of thing but i've had mine since gt4 and it's awesome. An old car seat and some wood... mine is pretty basic.

Im better with my DFGT.

I dont know why but i just couldnt use manual gears with the controller, so i always used auto. As some know thats usually slower than using manual gears.

Since ive used my wheel though ive used manual and its much easier, and it feels much more natural, and dare i say realistic.

Dont know what it was but with the controller i just couldnt get the manual gear shift down.

I found exactly the same problem when I switched to the Wheel - correcting oversteer is easy as hell on a controller. Thing is oversteer loses you time and speed. After a week or so I was much smoother through the corners, not getting oversteer which translated to much faster corner exits and much faster lap times.

Countersteering is something I've had to learn from scratch and it's much harder because it's much more realistic. I happen to like that and the fact that it takes skill to pull a vette out of a tailspin now where the controller did it for me before.

I immediately noticed a huge difference when I switched to a wheel. I had it mounted to a t.v. tray at first but that was to unstable so, I made a cockpit of sorts. The top is from and old dish washer , the chair is and old idea chair and the frame is made from 2x4's

I could make one I suppose but needs to fold away as don't have much space.

some people use an ironing board.

If you don't have one, but do have TV trays, you do what why I did:

You should be able to find a sheet of plywood that'll work at your local home depot's scrap wood section pretty cheap. If not, you can buy a sheet of plywood or OSB (stay away from MDF) and have them cut it to spec.

a 2 x 12 (6 feet if they carry it) should also work.

I still driving with my sixaxis, Idont have money to buy a wheel at the moment, but I will next year for sure.. wheel for GT5 is must have..!

PS still I completed 99.9% i was driving in gold and I have all licenses in gold.. so you can beat GT5 only with sixaxis ;)

EDIT - sorry for misleading.. I meant its possible to do gold in 99.9% with sixaxis! Im 85% in the game career mode.

Check this out. I saw it some time ago and thought it was one of the best cheap solututions. Those plastic pipes and fittings arent gonna cost a whole lot and you can custom build the height to your chair. It will be pretty light and will screw and push together. Some one I know did one of these and said that the uprights wernt very rigid. So they blocked off one end and mixed up some cement (building mortar) and filled the uprights. Adds to the weight but gives more stabilty.

I bought a DFGT three months ago, and since the first time I've used it, I felt a big

difference... The wheel is much more precise, smoother, and yes, I'm faster with the

wheel. You just have to get used to the oversteer, countersteer, because with the pad

you just have to slam the stick on the other side, while with the wheel you have to

notice in time the behavior of the car to correct it in time. I'm a lot faster with the

wheel anyway.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll see what I can knock up at the weekend, or I did find this on eBay which looks ok, what do you think? - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4-FOLDING-BLO...en_LivingRoomFurniture_EH&hash=item4cf3261720

I will stick with it, thanks for advice.

Stick with the wheel . l used a pad for years , was good with it too . Just recently got a DFGT and the difference is amazing . There is a learning curve with the wheel ( using feet for gas and brakes was the hardest for me ) . Once l made a wheelstand , everything just came together nicely , now l'm flying through the tracks , and have more control over the cars .
Have a look at my photo album on my profile page to see my home made wheelstand , total cost $ 0 . l found that elevating the pedals helps with comfort and control . Good luck.
